Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

  • Disappointing

by Jerry Fink on 2/4/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 1 out of 5

I bought these tickets to get a Bobblehead. I got to the stadium an hour before the game started and they weren’t available. It was bait and switch. I’ll never go to another Pittsburgh Penguin promotional night. I’ll buy the bobblehead on ebay. It’ll be a lot cheaper

  • Good time!

by Nick H on 2/4/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

Was a nice stadium set up, staff was courteous, local fans were friendlier than expected overall was a good experience.

  • Gift

by EvelD on 1/15/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Tickets were a gift for my daughter for Christmas & her birthday. When I was in labor with her, hockey was on the TV. She has been a fan ever since!

  • Great Night

by AL on 1/14/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

It is always a good night in Pittsburgh to watch the pens. We went two nights in a row and even though they lost both games it was a lot of fun. I am always please with my tickets and never had an issue with them.

  • The whole game experience was great.

by onion on 1/13/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

The hockey game was fun to watch. The ushers were pleasant and helpful. The hockey "atmosphere"was great with the players and the Star Wars theme around the stadium. I had a really good view of the ice rink. The only bad thing was the traffic was backed up really far coming off the Liberty Bridge. Traffic control by the city was abysmal. We missed some of the game because of it.

  • good game

by Bob Newhart on 1/12/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

great game. if you like hockey but if not then you must be an Oiler fan, cause they are not good.

  • I didn't pay anyway

by Ted on 1/2/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 2 out of 5

First off why the hell do you need a DJ making me feel like I'm at a dance club? Can't hear myself think. Next and this is why I don't attend games is the fact that the place looks like a freaking daycare. Infants and toddlers everywhere. The tickets were a gift. Used to love going to games but now it's all about getting on the big screen and continuous mostly useless "entertainment "instead of enjoying the game. I'm fine sitting in my home watching on my TV at home.

  • What a Fantastic Experience

  • GREAT NIGHT IN PITTSBURGH

by Jeffthekid on 1/1/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

I love the atmosphere, so many kids and family attending the game. The Jumbotron was so much fun seeing all the happy faces, can’t wait to go back and see another game 10 out of 10.

by Skar on 12/26/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Great time just wish more of the perks and other services were made known. Would have loved to have had dinner reservations and parking available. But top of the line experience.

  • From the cheap seats!

by Higgs on 12/3/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

We had seats in Row N, near mid ice and they were great. The arena is easy to navigate and getting through security was a breeze. Great game for the Penguins!

  • Excellent

by Lofred on 12/3/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time at the game! Crowd was great! All staff encountered were super!

  • Crazy prices

by Penguins Fan on 11/26/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 2 out of 5

The seating prices are overpriced and some of the food isn’t portioned consistent. I’d buy chicken fingers one day and you’d get a portion. Buy same place next time and the portion is just scraps. The value is not there to make going to the game worth it. Not to mention the team is in a rebuilding stage.

  • The seats are uncomfortable for > 5' 5"tall!

by kEd on 11/26/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 3 out of 5

The seat spacing, front to back, are uncomfortable. There is minimal leg room as you sit in the seat. The Penguins didn't play with 'passion'. They may have skated hard but spent too much time passing backwards or to one another. The venue, PPG Place, has a lot/variety to offer for the 'fans' that attend even though the prices of items are 'high' to the average consumer. The prices are not conducive to coming to many/most of the home games.

  • Good game

by Chief on 11/26/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

I loved the game and venue, Ticketmaster has a lot to like about it and a lot to hate about it. Ended up losing a few hundred dollars because of them. But the game was great
