Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

you could feel the electricity in the air as you entered the arena. it was a terrific back and forth game until the pens broke it open thanks to the play of playoff MVP Geno Malkin. hat's off to the canes for trying, but, the pens would not let the canes get the upperhand. geno was playing like a man possessed. that game showed the world what would be coming in the finals.

Great game of back and forth up and down the ice. Ultimately the Pens prevailed with a Malkin hat trick...it doesn't get much better than that!

  • Game 1, 2009 Stanley Cup conference finals

The crowd was surpisingly quiet at the start of the game - I attribute it to a new series with new, unfamiliar matchups. But the place went crazy as the Pens scored the first 2 goals and there was plenty of excitement at the end as the Canes got within 1 with just over a minute left.

The Penguins made the igloo rock as they defeated the Carolina Hurricanes. Mellon Arena is an eyesore from the inside, and I can't wait for it to be razed. The Penguins are the Stanley Cup Champions! Eat it Philthadelphia.

  • Nothing beats the playoffs at Mellon

by Heff on 7/12/09Mellon Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic experience, fantastic game! Nothing beats going to a playoff game at Mellon Arena. The sights, the smell of beer and cinnamon nuts, the unique concourse structure where each section is like it's own little venue. I'll be sad to see this building go. I bought a single ticket and am usually not inclined to go to a game alone, but Pens fans welcome you like family.
