Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

  • Not Bad, but pricey

by RockWood on 11/16/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

We always enjoy going to PPG for Pens games. The arena is always clean, and the staff is always friendly. But the prices are just outrageous. $12 for a cup of soda, and they no longer have free refills for them. Ridiculous. Beers run between $12 and $16. The Pens store for merchandise is even worse with pricing. Other than that, we enjoy ourselves for the most part. Even though they have been terrible this season so far.

  • Awful game

by Tim on 11/14/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 1 out of 5

Awful game. Penguins lost 7-1 and it was a waste of $200

  • Great venue

The venue was fantastic! Very clean. Staff was super helpful. Game was very interactive for the fans. Will definitely come to the arena for future events.

  • Pittsburgh Penguins

    by mikewalker20 on 10/23/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyable trip to PPG Paints Arena to watch the Penguins whilst in Pittsburgh. Overall experience of Ticketmaster was good although it does take some time in working out how to save your US tickets, digitally, if you live outside the US. Good value for money plus is was Lemieux bobble head night. Took my nephew who had never seen a hockey game and he loved the experience. Prices inside the arena are very expensive but also buying concessions was very easy and efficient. Would definitely recommend a visit when in Pittsburgh

  • Penguins!

Easy into the stadium and a great game!! We were able to see two milestones for Crosby and Malkin.

  • Shutout

by Poor effort on 10/13/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 2 out of 5

They lost 6-0. Enough said. But holding out hope they can regroup.

  • Let’s go Pens!

by Cindy on 10/12/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Nice arena. Good view for hockey anywhere you sit. And the most important thing is that to see Sidney Crosby play!

  • Penguins Rock

    by Sid's #1 Fan on 10/4/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Small crowd, pre season, fans were great, staff were friendly and helpful, fun to be there for the first Paws and Pucks even though we didn't have a dog. Iceburg was the best...giving my 29 year old daughter with Autism and her well handled beanie baby penguin the attention they hoped for! If the penguins had won it would have been perfect!

  • Awesome Hockey Experience

  • I love the Pittsburgh Penguins!

by JudyW on 4/16/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Each year I try to attend two hockey games in PIttsburgh and while there enjoy my favourite spots--Primanti Bros, Pamela's Diner, and the strip area. It is special to be part of the GO PENS GO chants supporting the Pittsburgh Penguins during their home games. My favourite player is Sidney Crosby, an exceptional hockey player and a great Canadian!

  • Great seats

  • Pens Game

    by Oldlefty22 on 4/16/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Not sure there is a bad seat in the place. We sat in sec 229 row 4. It was a great spot to watch the game. The fans were electric even with a loss. Only suggestion is if you drive do not park by arena. It’s a very busy spot to get out of.

  • Venue and staff

by Kenneth on 4/16/24PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was nice and the staff members were super friendly. Great job taking care of your fan base as well!
