Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and entered the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times.

  • disappointed with opener

by Maire on 10/14/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 3 out of 5

Pens Opener was a bit disappointing. When you take the time and money to go to a game you dont want to leave pissed off. The give aways at the game were concentrated only in a few sections of the arena. T shirts parachutes any extras like the dilly dance. Not fair to all the others that attend a game. They need to move around the arena to give all fans a chance not keep everything in the same few sections.

  • October 9th 2025

by Roadrunner on 10/12/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Parking and traffic was a nightmare but it was a nice evening and a fantastic back and forth game. The big three came to play and Malkin, whose sweater I was wearing, had a great game and was the #1 star.

  • Not happy with price

by Pens tix on 10/6/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 2 out of 5

I paid far more than people in our section which was WAY up top of arena...2 tix for me was like $562.00. Some people paid less than $100 per seat in same section. Kinda curious how that happens ??!!??

  • An Unforgettable Evening

by SRD on 10/5/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

This night was everything I could have hoped for and more. Seeing my favorite player in his original element, the Pittsburgh Black & Gold, surrounded by friends, family and the city that welcomed him with open arms and never stopped loving him was perfection. There are rare moments when over 20,000 people can share the exact same emotions at the exact same time. Being in the presence of Marc-André Fleury is one of those moments. From the fans to the event staff to the players, the media and entire Penguins organization - everyone in that arena knew what/who that night was about. And Pittsburgh did it right. #FleuryForever

Was lucky enough to get one seat in a suite for Fleury's last time on Penguin's ice. I highly recommend the experience. Clean, spacious, staff was so friendly and very helpful.

  • Fleury game

by KREB on 9/30/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 4 out of 5

while the game was good the pens were horrible on providing an adequate amount of Fleury merchandise we got there an hour before the doors opened to get in line and by the time we got into the pens gear shop many things were sold out the Pens dropped the ball on this one

  • Pittsburgh Delivers

by Gerry on 9/30/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

Such a great spot to watch a game and such a great city to visit for sports. Earlier in the day we watched a Pitt game, then the Penguins had a packed house for the pre season Fleury send off. Food, washrooms and facilities are awesome. Accessing good hotels was very easy also. Super easy entry with our ticketmaster tickets on the mobile phone.

  • Good time, price is getting out of reach

by Nick on 4/2/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 3 out of 5

My family had a great time, go Penns. Almost $200 for 3 second level seats and $53 to park is getting crazy. After food and one drink for 3 people your easily at almost $400. Hockey used to be pretty affordable for great seats. It’s a shame things are this expensive as it’s made it a special event now to go, it’s no longer just a nice way to spend the evening with friends and family for almost anyone.

  • Penguins hockey

by CK on 3/24/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

This game was the ninth game that I’ve been to and it was by far the best! This was the best I’ve seen us play (in person) in a while! It was Phil Kessel bobblehead night and I didn’t think we got there in time but we did and we got the bobbleheads! Also Boko almost got a Gordie Howe hatrick yessir!!

  • Great experience!

by K Stover on 3/24/25PPG Paints Arena - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time, especially with our tickets being up on the glass by the goal. We definitely want to get these seats again!
