Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Mercury will take it next go-round

by Tuxie on 8/9/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

We went, we enjoyed. You can't win them all they say and this statement held up. My team is still in first place and will win the Western Conference Championship. Afterwards, they will go on to take it all. It was even clear last night during their loss to Indiana. They just got off to a very cold start and trailed the entire game. There were glimpses of hope several times, but the never panned out. Going again 8/29! Love you DT!!

game and disco night theme was very fan friendly. The hip hop squad was very interactive with the crowd and dressed the part to make disco night a success. The themes that the team has for game nights help get more crowd involvement.

  • Mercury Rising!

by ArizonaFan on 7/22/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great. It was just the beginning of another Mercury winning streak! It is inspiring to see such talented athletes with composure and skill. The WNBA is doing a wonderful job of supporting and promoting female athletes. These girls play hard and deserve some respect. Go show some support with friends or family!

  • Always a fun time

by bballfan on 7/21/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

We had a great time at the game. All seats are good because they don't open the upper level. It was a good game and it's nice to support the WNBA.

  • Mercury vs. Shock was a great game

by Geminis on 7/20/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

The game and entertainment was great. The fans were awesome. I came in from out of town for the game and it was great. Very disappointed Diana did not play due to suspension as that was the whole reason we flew in for the game. On the other hand Cappie did her thing. The only bad thing is the restrooms were filthy and this was before the game had even started.

  • These Ladies Can Play

by WNBAFanRealMan on 7/18/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

Though the Mercury is my favorite team, I like Seattle too, and I was happy to see Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson and Swin Cash playing in person. Seattle will be a team to reckon with in the West, and the Storm showed why that night. It would have been nice if the Mercury had won, but it's OK because that was the only loss in Phoenix so far this year. I'm very excited that Penny Taylor is coming back! If they continue the great work, our Mercury ladies may be able to bring Phoenix another championship this year.

  • Deafening

    by wolrab49 on 7/16/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

Great game but my ears are still ringing from the screams of over 5000 very young schoolkids. If you go and see a matinee Mercury game during the school holidays make sure to take ear defenders!

  • The sound of the next generation

by Deafened on 7/16/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This was the very first Mercury game I have attended. My wife thought it was would be a good way to spend the day. I thought why not. I was not expecting anything great. When we got off the light rail and walked over to Airways Center I saw lines of school busses off loading scores of multicolored, rugrats, crumbcrushers, ankle biters and assorted curtain climbers. I thought boy this is going to be interesting. Being retired and not yet a grandfather I figured I would tolerate the "campers" but would probably bail out of the game early. It didn't happen. The entire experience is one I will remember for a long time. All the kids were well behaved and well supervised. From the fantastic rendition of the national athem by a young lady with a voice much bigger than her munchkin size to the final tic of the clock, my wife and I were enthralled. The fact that the Mercury won the game with some inspired basketball was only a great ending to a fantastic day. Mascots, timeout contests, well behaved but enthusiastic fans and the piercing screams made this a day to remember. My compliments to the Mercury and Airways Center staff, hip hop dancers, ushers, camper keepers, and all who were involved. We shall be back and not just because we enjoy watching a winning team. We shall return because you guys do a great job and show you have fun doing it.

  • Entertaining

    by sherfamily15 on 7/16/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

We took our two 7 months old twin girls. And they loved it. They were very well behaved. The game is always moving. It is never dull. They always have something going on during time out etc. They get the crowd moving. They are always involving the crowd and everything.

  • Great seats; ok experience

by Sportfans on 7/15/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

We loved the seats that we got through this website. They were in the corner of the stadium, so ok viewing, but the most fantastic thing is that they were very comfortable - plush seats with a back and arms with cup holders. Only, the game was not as exciting as we had hoped.
