Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Always Exciting

by DRW on 5/24/23Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

It was BG’s first home game since being detained in Russia. Very emotional, beautiful set up. The music & entertainment (hip hop squad) was great! Free shirts were given out for 1st home game (season opener) along with other giveaways and the game was electric! The staff are VERY nice, though food & drink were SUPER pricey! Gotta get to as many games as possible this season! GO MERCURY!

  • Excellent Experience!

I've only attended maybe half a dozen games since 1997, but became totally interested after the Griner grab in Russia. Mercury team is incredible to watch and so is the crowd! X-Factor, young kids, oldsters, Brownie & Girl Scout groups, everyone loves the Mighty Mercury! They play their heart out every game, even without their star players! Always a fun & exciting time!

  • Inspiration for My Baller Daughter

by Toni on 8/15/22Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This event was so much more than I anticipated. The facilities, food, staff and the players were amazing...approachable, caring, and attentive. You get so much for the ticket prices. Truly an inspirational night to remember. We had a canceled flight so we bought tickets to another game and went last minute. That's how much fun we had.

  • Great if you want to lose your hearing

by Queen on 8/15/22Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

PA System was far too loud. Hurt my ears even with earplugs in. Seats are super cramped so not very comfortable. At least there is room to move a little next door at the DBacks.

  • Cool pre-game salute to retiring Sue Bird, very hot 4th qtr

by Blues Professor on 7/26/22Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

A great moment: Watching two of the greatest WNBA players of all time, Seattle’s Sue Bird & Mercury’s superstar Diana Taurasi, in a pregame ceremony honoring Bird’s retirement after this season. A close game followed until the 4th qtr when the Mercury piled up the points. I was impressed by the staff at the arena, everyone I encountered was friendly, polite, and helpful, even those standing just outside the doors in 107-degree weather, scanning mobile tickets and respectfully checking bags and cell phones. And you’re allowed to bring in a sealed water bottle. The only annoyance was shameless price-gouging on beer, canned wine, soft drinks, and bottled water ($7 for a bottle of water is obscene — and pretty hostile to those who’d like to bring their kids. Seriously, $16 for a 24-oz Dos Equis or Heineken with a store price of $3 or less; and $15 for a 24-oz domestic beer (24 oz. equals about two regular cans or bottles of beer)? At Arizona Cardinals games and the D’Backs stadium just two blocks away, beer prices are significantly less. And the Fingerprint Center beer sales include no expenditures for staff servers, no plastic cups or even a cashier. You get your own canned or plastic bottled beverage from a huge wall of glass-doored refrigeration units, scan your selection and your credit card, and head for your seat. Next time we’ll hit the Pomo’s pizza stand, which looked like the best option. One more bright spot, the new HVAC kept the whole arena cool.

  • Awesome time

    by Norma A on 7/25/22Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Enjoyed the game. It was great seeing Taurasi and Bird facing off before Bird retires. Love the former UCONN players so it was a plus to see Breanna Stewart.
