Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Awesome Game

by Shawntastic on 9/29/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This game had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end! It started with the interactive bracelets, the clean facilities, excellent customer service at the food vendors, & the rally towels! The X-Factor is so hype and the energy is contagious. I recommend attending a Mercury game just for the atmosphere alone!

  • Amazing atmosphere, Amazing Game. GREAT EXPERIENCE

First time going to a mercury game with my daughter. Will be making this a tradition by trying to make it to more games next year.

It was fantastic to be there in person when the MERCURY clinched round 1 in the finals. Great experience

  • Hype

It was a great game ! LOUD and exciting. Played great defense for the win .

  • WNBA better in person than on TV

by Tom L on 9/22/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the Liberty game in Brooklyn NY. The fans are great. The entertainment experience even during timeouts is enjoyable. Like women's tennis the shorter periods IMO make the game more fun than men's sport. Part of the reason I went to the Phoenix Mercury game was to see it was the same fun experience as in NY. Trust me, it was the same fun and enjoyable event. The players are great. It is more fun watching the team play than men's basketball where individual players dominate the game. If you have been bored with pro sports, I encourage you to give WNBA a chance. Big money has not ruined the sport like it has men's sports.

  • Winners

by DNice! on 9/22/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The seats were amazing, easy access with aisle seats. The view at the game is magic when seeing both teams in action. WNBA are all winners and the seats made it great! Row 6 center court!

  • Tickets

by Griffy on 9/17/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

Tickets were an easy process to get, but the game ended up being bad because the Phoenix Mercury lost other than that. Everything else was good.

  • Phoenix mercury

by BC on 9/17/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

It was our first time at Phoenix arena. Entrance into game was quick and easy. It looked like there wasn't a bad seat in the house. Crowd was great. Lines for women's bathroom long at halftime but moved relatively fast.

  • Love it

  • Phoenix Mercury vs Indiana Fever 9/2

by Becca C on 9/7/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

Was disappointed after paying $500 for tickets, seats would be completely obstructed by net/pole. Yes you can watch on the jumbo screen (but you can also watch on your own big screen tv) Absolutely hated the loud distasteful music played prior to game. Even though I am a Fever fan, did enjoy the way Phoenix introduced the players. Special effects were spectacular!

  • Such a great time

by PHX Mercury Game on 9/5/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

We really enjoyed the game. First time going. We got upgraded which our daughter loved. We will be purchasing again!

  • Girl Power

by Gracie on 8/20/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Celebrating girls of all ages was fun. My family and I enjoyed taking pictures with all of Scorches friends.

The Phoenix Mercury game that I went to this past Friday versus Las Vegas Aces. The game was great, the employees are great, the energy was great and the atmosphere in the arena was phenomenal. The experience was great. The employees are efficient. 10/10 recommended. I’ll be back.

  • A great game

by Dawn on 8/13/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The game was full of tense and fun! Both teams were tough. The sea of Mercury fans were very thrilled at every moment Mercury players got the ball. We love the vibes! Go Mercury!

  • Great arena for watching basketball

by Mista Baker on 8/10/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Went to see the Fever play the Mercury on 8/8/25 at the Phoenix Arena. Every seat has a fantastic view of the court. Even if you're in the top last row. The huge 4 sided screen even brings the live action and replays that much closer. $50 for section 205 row 5 was a super deal.

  • Fun Time & Playful Mascot

by Carla on 8/10/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Had excellent seats in row 7 behind basket and mascot came and sat with us. Was a fun time!

  • Festive and fun

by Jkongsiv on 8/8/25PHX Arena (formerly Footprint Center) - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This new generation of players are in fine form and there is non-stop fan engagement with contests and performances and giveaways. It was like going to a really positive, all-ages party. Helps that our Mercury dominated the whole game. Special shout out to the Cameroonian fans who showed out, complete with drumming and regalia.
