About

Pop-rock musician Phillip Phillips wowed “American Idol” fans and judges in season 11 with spot-on covers of iconic songs including Steve Wonder’s “Superstition”, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, and Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle”. Phillips’ scratchy vocals, reminiscent of his own idol Dave Matthews, are exemplified in his chart-topping debut single “Home” as well as sweet, mellow tracks like “So Easy”. His platinum-selling first album The World from the Side of the Moon includes the upbeat love song “Gone, Gone, Gone”, which is sure to be a wedding song for Phillips fans for years to come. The Georgia-born singer/songwriter wound up taking home the title of American Idol, but only after dealing with congenital kidney issues that landed him in the hospital for eight surgeries during the “Idol” season. Phillips recovered in time for the “American Idol LIVE Tour”, performing major-market concerts alongside the season’s nine other top contestants. The 46-city trek sold more than a quarter of a million tickets overall, placing it at No. 62 in the Top 200 North American tours of 2012.

While I was very impressed by the musical talent of the entire band as well as Phillip Phillips I got bored by the lengthy musical interludes. While I understood the need to fill time due to the fact that he only has one album out currently and therefore does not have as much material as a more established artist, it got old after about the third song. I wouldn't have minded so much but it was with every single song and in the end detracted from the experience. He would sing the song and get every one pumped up and then they would do a musical jam for 3-4 minutes before moving on to the next song. It was made tolerable solely due to the genuine talent of all involved. I was quite impressed by the opening band Twin Forks though the lead vocals sounded muffled at times.

  • Great musician. More acoustic please.

Opening act was a very nice surprise. Would highly recommend Twin Forks - especially to anyone who likes Lumineers or Avett Brothers. Phillip has music coming out of every pore - many similarities to Dave Matthews have already been pointed out ... A very hard working musician that deserves a great future. Some nice add-ons to his songs to make it interesting along with Gabriel and Phil Collins covers. Great lead in to Home which really got everyone going. Audience interaction was as disjointed as his leg movement. But endearing in his down south "aw shucks" drawl. Biggest gripe is that he let the electric guitar solos turn into a noisy wall of sound for too many of the songs. And it seemed like exactly the same wall of noise. But he'll get the balance figures out - he's definitely a special musician.

  • Phillip Phillips is better than I expected!

I liked his voice and his laid back style from American Idol. I didn't realize what a wonderful musician he is. Wow...he can really play guitar. His bad is fabulous. I think he is more into playing than singing, which I find funny as he won a voice contest. The arrangements were out of this world. Really great show!

  • Better than anticipated

I'm not the biggest Phillip Phillips fan (this was a birthday gift for my wife), and heading in, I expected a decent show, with some covers to make up for his small catalog and fill up his setlist. I left the show quite impressed that he skipped the covers and focused instead on giving his great band space to jam. The jazz/blues tinged solos made for a great atmosphere, and turned the songs into real gems.

  • philip philips, great concert

Loved his first CD, but was not expecting his tour to be so polished. Needs to loosen up with the audience a little more but his music was impressive. Appreciate his unique quality of personalizing existing hits (Thriller) without loosing their essence. He brought the house down with Home and I think it even surprised the band. Speaking of the band, the trumpet and lead guitarist were awsome and added extra to the performance. Overall it was excellent and would recommend people see him.

Great musician! Venue was nice, no refreshments available. Staff were disorganized initially about will call pick up. Churchill was great, will look for their album. Philip was engaging and captivated the audience.

This concert was far more than I expected. The opening act was good and a crowd pleaser. Phillip Phillips was a rockin' good time. A blend of jazz and rock and with a great band along for the ride. Simply effects and good sound made for a fun show. The encore was awesome too. He came out alone and then brought the band back for 1 more.

  • Phillip phillips at NMSU

by LilyRam on 3/31/13NMSU Pan American Center - Las CrucesRating: 5 out of 5

Phillip phillips at NMSU was by far the best concert I have EVER been to. The band was so amazing and talented and so was Phillips. Phillips sang some songs from his album "The World From the Side of the Moon" which sounded even better live. He also performed a new song that he recently wrote which was raw and meaningful and Obviously going to be a hit (if it is included in the next album). He did some GREAT covers of songs; Hey ya (Black Eyed Peas), Nice and Slow, Lolipop (Little Wayne), and Lose yourself (Eminem). He finished the concert with his hit "Home". The experience was a great one I didn't want it to end! Waiting for the day when I get to go to another one of his concerts! You just don't see raw, real, authentic talent like Phillip Phillips anymore!
