About

Peter Gabriel’s five-decade-long career includes nine studio albums, film scores for the likes of Martin Scorsese, six Grammy Awards and two separate inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a solo artist and founder of ’70s prog-rock pioneers Genesis). As a solo artist, Gabriel has sold an estimated 16 million albums worldwide, with his fifth studio album — 1986’s So — going five-times platinum in the U.S. and producing the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Sledgehammer.” Gabriel’s catalog of hits also includes ballads like “In Your Eyes,” which was featured in an iconic scene from the 1989 teen rom-com, Say Anything. Gabriel has performed in front of countless sold-out crowds on world tours that often include large-scale performances and conceptual set design. In May 2023, Gabriel embarked on i/o – The Tour, his first world tour in seven years, which features songs from his forthcoming 10th studio album, i/o — his first full-length album of new songs in over two decades.

Peter Gabriel Marches To His Own Drummer

by TonyAnz on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

...or Lack Thereof Those of you familiar with Peter Gabriel fully well know that he's prone to zig, at the precise moment you believe he aught to zag. 'Scratch My Back' the new album and the tour are no exception, but are exceptional. Whereas I'm still coming to terms with the concept of his coverage of a fairly obscure selection of tunes penned by other artists, I once again find myself saluting him for having the stones to do it. His stylization is so potent that it's easy to slip into the funk of forgetting that they're not his tunes. He makes them all his own. My biggest gripe is that the arrangements seem to mimic each other in a formula that gets under my skin. A whisper to a scream, if you will. It is although a sonically and spiritually better experience, live. For the first set of the show Mr. Gabriel performed his new offering. Joining him on stage with backing vocals were Melanie Gabriel and Ane Brun, often referred to as the Scandinavian Dolly Parton. The New Blood Orchestra was phenomenal. I won't say that the orchestral arrangements were lush as that would be cheating them terribly. Divine better suits the description. Ben Foster was superb at the helm. PG seemed comfortable and capable with the material. The video clips and special effects were outstanding. The first set was a bit of a drone, personally I'm not complaining. It was what it was and that was completely by design. In contrast, he pulled out and dusted off the PG relics for the second set and that was somewhat more compelling. Radio City seemed to become awakened. Hearing the classic PG tracks with lovely, flowing orchestral arrangements, was moving. Even the Master himself seemed happier. Evidently, this tour has an extremely limited number of engagements. The dough factor for carting around an entire orchestra is fairly cost prohibitive. If at all possible, get to one of these once in a lifetime performances, especially if you're a die-hard Gabriel fan. Just please do us all a favor and don't scream out idiotic song requests like 'Supper's Ready' in the middle of the numbers.

My wife and I both were very excited to see this show. We had no idea the effect it would have. Randomly throughout the night, people all around us we tearing up at the beauty that is Peter and his music. I would put this right at the top of best concerts I have ever seen.

    Peter Gabriel was faubulous

by Davidthecomposer on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Live appearances by Peter Gabriel are rare, and this one, the first I ever attended, just blew me away. And let's not forget the Scandinavian girl who did two numbers at the beginning, and (I think, or was it someone else) joined in later. The visual effects were also great, as were the orchestra and all other assisting artists. There was no printed program, so I am going to attempt to get the details. It was a surprise having a full orchestra as accompaniment. Maybe the announcements said it, but if they did I did not take notice. I wish he would appear more often.

Needed Drums and Guitar (and Elec. Bass, Keys...)

by Budhead on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Some gems (The Power Of The Heart, My Body Is A Cage, The Book Of Love), that would have been wonderful amongst songs done with his regular band (David Rhodes, Tony Levin, Manu Katche, etc.). But after the first half, the second half of the show just started to become redundant, and I just had to leave before falling asleep.

    Gabriel has a dark soul

by Zappa69 on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

I was glad I listened to Pete's new album before the show...otherwise I might have thought Pete needed therapy after the first act. I thought it lasted about 4 songs too long. Each song in that act sounded the same, dark. The second act was awesome. Pete sounds as good as ever and the sound, visuals and orchestra were like no show I'd ever heard. Overall recommended for Pete's fans, as long as they are prepared for the dark first act.

Peter Gabriel - Brilliant as Always

by nymom813 on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Not as high energy as I would have hoped, BUT fantastic to hear a full orchestra behind one of the most amazing voices on the planet.

    A Great Musician and Perfomer

by mrmexico on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

PG is the best musician there is, and to watch him live, leading his own music in front of a symphonic orchestra is an unforgettable experience. As if we were watching Mozart perform!

A once in a lifetime experience...

by Anonymous on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

PG addressed the audience and explained how the concert would be presented. The new album ' scratch my back' would be played first, then an intermission and some other stuff. If you are expecting Sledgehammer and Shock th Monkey stay home because PG has selected and rearranged songs like Mercy Street, San Jancinto, Red Rain and others whose arrangements lend themselves to a 54 piece Orchestra. Mindbending performance ! Another added bonus is all the cutting edge technology PG employs.

    Overall great concert!

by MarissaL16 on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Concert started out beautiful, but very slow, with all songs from his new album. After a short 15 min break, though, Peter came out and sang some of his classics. It was a great progression, the crowd much louder during this second half. Amazing visuals too.

    Peter Gabriel Radio City 5/2

by Tedwasbored on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

This was an incredibly self indulgent show but you would never know it from the crowd reaction. The first half of the show was a funeral dirge. I cannot comment on the second half since I was not there to witness it. Life is too short to waste time at this performance. I am a fan of PG but this was very dissappointing.

9 parts magic. 1 part tedium.

by dante743 on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

PG was in great voice. The orchestra was wonderful and the visuals were understated and appropriate. Unfortunately, for me, some of the "new" covers sounded too much alike and shared the same pacing and range.

    Emotional Show

by jervetodc on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Pros: amazing singing and emotional pieces...orchestra looked great and screens and minimal graphics were excellent. The venue was beautiful and classy, perfect for show...A few of the pieces moved me to tears. Cons; the first half new material was too much and should have been interspersed with classics. The crowd was growing impatient. His voice at times were drowned out some by the orchestra. He needed more percussion and upbeat pieces to keep the pacing.

by BigU2Fans on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Peter Gabriel put on a great concert. The orchestra definitely made the experience different and more mellow. The first half was the new album and 2nd half was all older popular stuff. The second half was definitely better but I enjoyed the entire show.

    An Amazing Experience

by Anonymous on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Very few times one can be completely taken into a musical experience such as this one. What I like about Peter and this tour is that he is able to take his fans out of their comfort zone into something that is completely knew and innovative. An amazing evening with a brilliant group of musicians.

    What happened to Peter Gabriel??!!

by Canuck111 on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

Peter, Peter, you used to be so much fun and a great entertainer. The Radio City show was dull, slow and oh so self-indulgent. I am all for having an orchestra backing you but at some point there is nothing wrong with having an electric guitar, bass and drums to play some of your old classics. Digging in the Dirt did not work at all without drums! Speaking of old classics - where were they? Sledge Hammer etc etc. People come to listen to your old stuff as well as the new. To have the first half of the show where you sang all of your new album without a break was just arrogance. I watched the energy of the people around me just ebb away as you went from one slow, depressing, drab song to the next. I paid $400 to be entertained - unfortunately I ended up at a funeral.

Peter was great, but his show was lacking

by bored2pieces on 5/3/10Radio City Music Hall - New York

The show was a bit disappointing for me - not to take anything away from Peter's tone & quality, or the "New Blood" orchestra's sound. I was expecting more out of a show, as my expectations were high after seeing the show he did from Milan (on tv) a few years back. I think the orchestra may have been a nice touch to enhance his band, but not replace it altogether. The 1st half of the show was entirely the new album of covers. it was lacking in "umph," as I like to say, and it put me in a very sleepy mind frame for the 2nd 1/2, which was slightly more upbeat. It just bothered me that it took about 2.5 hours to get the crowd more engaged (Solisbury Hill). It was a bit of a sleeper for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. I was mesmerized by his songs, his voice, the orchestra, the back up singers. Kudos! I would see him again!!!
