Pavement on Tour

For the first time in more than a decade, '90s indie rock band Pavement are sending nostalgia shockwaves to fans and audience members around the world with their 2022 reunion tour set to hit more than 30 cities across North America, the UK and Europe. Known perhaps as the line of demarcation between punk and garage alternative, Pavement are considered to be one of the most important indie rock bands of the '90s, drawing parallels to Built to Spill, R.E.M., the Pixies, and Sonic Youth. Despite making waves nearly 30 years ago, Pavement's timeless sound continues to draw in fans -- whether they're hearing them for the first time or looking for a dose of nostalgia. While Pavement's sound and style led to an underground, cult-classic following, the band did achieve fringe mainstream success with their hit "Cut Your Hair" from their 1994 album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Other studio releases include their 1992 debut Slanted and Enchanted, 1995's Wowee Zowee, 1997's Brighten the Corners, and 1999's Terror Twilight. Most recently, the group has re-released their most successful album with previously unreleased music. Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal, is a 45-track live set featuring the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, 28 unreleased tracks, and a the previously unreleased new single "Be the Hook."

Pavement Live in Concert

Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg were childhood friends from Stockton, California, who had a passion for music at an early age. However, before forming Pavement,  Malkmus spent time at the University of Virginia where he graduated with a degree in history. It wasn't until after his time in college that he returned home and the two formed the garage band that was part of the underground rock wave that saturated the music space in the '90s. Pavement recorded their first EP, Slay Tracks: (1933-1969) in 1989 in a local studio run by Gary Young and released it under Young's label Treble Kicker. Young was officially added to the group with the recording of the follow-up project Demolition Plot J-7 under the label Drag City Records. The band would hit the touring scene for the first time in 1991 with the release of the EP Perfect Sound Forever where they added bassist Mark Ibold and a second drummer, Bob Nastanovich. Pavement released their debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, in 1992, garnering critical praise that spread throughout the underground rock scene. They saw mainstream success with the single "Cut Your Hair," which made the Top 10 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and became an MTV phenomenon with the coinciding music video.

Throughout their career, Pavement have drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like the Warner Theatre to capacity.

    Amazing!

by Pavehead on 9/16/22The Masonic - San Francisco

I think they're playing better than ever! Thoroughly enjoyed the SF shows, especially 2nd night. The band was tight and SM's vocals and guitar were excellent!

Pavement is Rad. SF Masonic...not as Rad.

by Matti on 9/15/22The Masonic - San Francisco

Pavement was everything I had hoped they would be. The sound system at the Masonic, although, had an intermittent, strange popping on one of the mics that was super distracting. I expected better.

    Bucket List Show!

by Hollyfleur on 9/15/22The Masonic - San Francisco

Ahhh, sweet, quirky, Stephen Malkimus, you did not disappoint. This show was such a fun one with a great line up of songs. While the crowd was predominantly middle aged white men, my teenaged daughter, her bestie and I had a great night out enjoying live music from my teen years. Nostalgia at its finest!

    Powerful

by Grant L on 9/14/22Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

All 3 nights at the Orpheum were great. Because Pavement is great. The venue is also very nice. Unfortunately, Orpheum doesn’t seem to have AC at all, and the shows were packed. So, it got hot. Extremely hot on Friday. Holy hell. Staff knew it, and gave out free water. Thankfully, Pavement is so damn tough, they soldiered through the heat, even playing an extra few songs after Friday’s encore. The set lists were completely different each night, and created differing moods for each show. Brilliant, beautiful music. Love Pavement.

The band was near perfect. The sound at this venue was surprisingly very good compared to other nearby venues.

    No AC and Warm Beers

by Hutch on 9/13/22Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

The band was amazing! The AC situation kinda sucked but would have been more tolerable if the beers were cold. Beers at the bar downstairs were warm.

    not loud enough, claustrophobic upstairs

by snaphooks on 9/11/22Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Pavement were great. So stoked to see them. But being in the balcony took away a lot from the experience. The mix wasn't loud enough, I couldn't even tell if Spiral Stairs was playing at all. Drums and bass were gutless. Stephen puts on a great show though. Lucky to be able to see them finally.

    Great Performance!

by Shirine on 12/19/10Virgin Fest - Columbia

I grew up with Bobby and Steve so it was interesting watching them perform in front of all those people and seeing the crowd get into the music. It was a great show, they were very impressive, and the crowd loved them.

Pavement still rocks after 10 years apart!!!

by Anonymous on 11/22/10Uptown Theater - Kansas City

Pavement's reunion tour was absolutely amazing!! The show at Uptown Theater in Kansas City totally rocked! The band that rocked just under the radar for all those years still has what it takes. Definitely one of the best shows I have ever been to.

    Pure Rock n' Roll

    by dissaray22 on 10/9/10Agganis Arena - Boston

The title says it all. This show was pure rock and roll. There was enough flannel to sink the Bismark and energy to carry out through out the entire show. If you can, GO! (The sound at Agganis Arena was pretty bad, I wouldn't jump at the chance at seeing a show there again....)

by Anonymous on 10/7/10Rumsey Playfield, Central Park - New York

I traveled from DC to New York in anticipation of finally seeing [one of my all-time favorites] Pavement perform live. I had purchased the tickets almost exactly a year in advance, so I was a pent-up ball of emotions and expectation. I avoided reading about their other Central Park shows, though I did familiarize myself with the set-lists. I got in line at 5:30 PM and grabbed myself a seat...then all I could do was wait. The Beets opened. I didn't care for them and almost wondered how they gained the coveted spot. They put in a good effort though, and tided us over until Pavement took the stage at 9PM. I was in awe, it seemed unreal that they were right in front of me. Malkmus presided over his group and Bob Nastanovich provided comedic relief, as per usual. It was great just to see them together again and feel nostalgic. Malkmus's gravelly vocals and guitar antics took me right back to the 90's. It was a marathon set, and they played a little bit of everything. My long list of favorites includes "Elevate Me Later," "Summer Babe," "Frontwards," "Shady Lane," and "Perfume-V". I can only wish they had played my all-time favorite "Texas Never Whispers" and/or Terror Twilight sleeper hit "Major Leagues". I am glad that I made the trek to NY rather than seeing them at Virgin Freefest the next day. Though there was less intimacy than I would have liked, the show was phenomenal and I couldn't have asked for anything more.

    fun!

by girlstephen on 10/5/10Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

What an amazing lineup: Sonic Youth AND Pavement. It's like hitting two birds with one stone. Pavement sounds completely different live, like a cover band with each individual musician playing their own different versions of Pavement songs. And Bob N. joined the audience! They're much more fun live than I had anticipated. The great weather for an outdoor concert was a plus as well. Amazing.

Pavement = awesome • Roy Wilkins = worst venue evs

by jrosh on 10/4/10Roy Wilkins Auditorium at St. Paul RiverCentre - St Paul

My title says it all. Pavement was great. I've been waiting to see these guys for 15 years and they didn't disappoint. The venue sucked though.... the sound and the vibe at Roy Wilkins Auditorium is always terrible. There are very few bands that can get me to pay for a ticket at RW aud.

    Pavement Sonic Youth

by huxleygal on 10/4/10Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Would have rather not have No Age and 30 min extra from Sonic Youth and Pavement. Hollywood Bowl sounds wonderful especially considering it's a large outdoor venue. The headliner, Pavement rocked it while they were out there but played less than an hour set. Kind of disappointed in that.

    Pavement ROCKED!!

by OrlandoDoom on 10/4/10Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The two opening bands rocked satisfactorily... Sonic youth (being cast as the headliner in the local media) produced a showing true to their age, yet still brought the dirty distortion we've all grown to love them for. More to the point was the fact that after swearing off LA (as most people do at some point) PAVEMENT still brought all the excitement, animosity, & quirky rock songs that never gave them the mainstream allure as their favorite band, Sonic youth, but for true fans; there wasn't enough time to satisfy everyone's favorite songs. I truly celebrate their entire catalog!

Pavement and Sonic Youth an Incredible Show Make

by nekojcat on 10/4/10Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I had high hopes coming into the show. Pavement are a long time favorite and I was certifiably giddy all week thinking about the show. I really wasn't expecting much from Sonic Youth and No Age I could take or leave, but nonetheless I was excited. I got to the venue a little late. I completely missed No Age's set, and I feel sorry I didn't give them even a passing listen, but when we sat down and were assaulted by Sonic Youth's amazing wall of guitars, I was as happy as could be. From a group that looks made up of your cooler friend's parents, these guys can seriously rock. Amazing sound, and I could have sat through at least another hour of their material and not wiggled a bit in my seat. The mix was also great and sounded wonderful in the bowl. The Hollywood Bowl has a tendency to get muddled, but Sonic Youth played that to their advantage and they sounded spectacular. Pavement came out next, played Cut Your Hair and got the ball rolling. Great set from them as well, though I would have loved to hear Embassy Row live. I'm partial to that song. There were some weak moments in the set, mostly by captain screaming no rhythm (whoever the hell that was), but Malkmus and crew were able to take the helm again and the night was pretty stellar. I will say the sound was less than perfect for Pavement. Definitely not up to the same mix as Sonic Youth had, but I didn't mind. It was great to see them live and something I had wished I could have done years ago. Great show, and highly recommended.

Don't try to follow Sonic Youth

    by Alfalfa323 on 10/4/10Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Pavement put on a good show: did bang up versions of the best songs from Slanted and Crooked Rain, and showed the same loose exuberance that made the band's reputation. Unfortunately, they had to follow Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth exhibited the musicianship and interplay of a band that has been playing consistently for 30 years. At this point, they are less playing than conducting a sonic orchestra. They now have the virtuosity to bring to fruition all of the ideas they have sketched out during their career. I can think of no other band ever that has maintained this level of vitality into a fourth decade. A live album is long overdue. No Age were fairly unexceptional.
