Pavement on Tour

For the first time in more than a decade, '90s indie rock band Pavement are sending nostalgia shockwaves to fans and audience members around the world with their 2022 reunion tour set to hit more than 30 cities across North America, the UK and Europe. Known perhaps as the line of demarcation between punk and garage alternative, Pavement are considered to be one of the most important indie rock bands of the '90s, drawing parallels to Built to Spill, R.E.M., the Pixies, and Sonic Youth. Despite making waves nearly 30 years ago, Pavement's timeless sound continues to draw in fans -- whether they're hearing them for the first time or looking for a dose of nostalgia. While Pavement's sound and style led to an underground, cult-classic following, the band did achieve fringe mainstream success with their hit "Cut Your Hair" from their 1994 album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Other studio releases include their 1992 debut Slanted and Enchanted, 1995's Wowee Zowee, 1997's Brighten the Corners, and 1999's Terror Twilight. Most recently, the group has re-released their most successful album with previously unreleased music. Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal, is a 45-track live set featuring the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, 28 unreleased tracks, and a the previously unreleased new single "Be the Hook."

Pavement Live in Concert

Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg were childhood friends from Stockton, California, who had a passion for music at an early age. However, before forming Pavement,  Malkmus spent time at the University of Virginia where he graduated with a degree in history. It wasn't until after his time in college that he returned home and the two formed the garage band that was part of the underground rock wave that saturated the music space in the '90s. Pavement recorded their first EP, Slay Tracks: (1933-1969) in 1989 in a local studio run by Gary Young and released it under Young's label Treble Kicker. Young was officially added to the group with the recording of the follow-up project Demolition Plot J-7 under the label Drag City Records. The band would hit the touring scene for the first time in 1991 with the release of the EP Perfect Sound Forever where they added bassist Mark Ibold and a second drummer, Bob Nastanovich. Pavement released their debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, in 1992, garnering critical praise that spread throughout the underground rock scene. They saw mainstream success with the single "Cut Your Hair," which made the Top 10 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and became an MTV phenomenon with the coinciding music video.

Throughout their career, Pavement have drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like the Warner Theatre to capacity.

    Woaaahh

by KevinPritch on 6/20/10Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

Broken Social Scene, returning to their home city of Toronto. It was essentially a collection of all their friends that have "made it" over the last couple of years appearing on stage together. They were all sooooo happy to be there, and everything sounded flawless. The crowd was happy, chill, and very thankful for their return.

Pavement blew every other band away.

by thedude716 on 6/20/10Toronto Centre Island (Olympic Island) - Toronto

Some of the openers were pretty good. Broken Social Scene lived up to expectations. Pavement was easily the best act though. They were so good! Their set was perfect, they played all the essentials and more. I don't think I've been to another show as good as this, except for maybe Wilco.

Went there from Michigan only to see BOH, living legends! The rest of the acts were great and the weather was perfect. My 10 month old had an awesome first concert experience!

    Pavement: Diamond Sharp

    by b11a2 on 4/20/10Fox Theatre - Pomona

The show was absolutely sensational. A 30-song setlist covering their entire career, starting from Silence Kid and going all the way to Conduit for Sale! This set featured all of the hits, and all of my favorite deeper cuts, and they were performed masterfully by the band. Amazing to hear all of my favorite songs live for the first time, as I got into Pavement just after the break up. Also caught their set at Coachella, which they also rocked.

    Pavement didnt dissapoint

by cab23 on 4/16/10The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Great show! i had heard Pavement was hit or miss live, but this show was great from start to finish. i had about a 20 minute span there when i was smiling from ear to ear like a kid in a candy store as they played gem after gem. who cares if they got together to make money, last night showed they were having a lot of fun and were not thinking about the paycheck.

    Ahhhh Pavement

by Anonymous on 4/16/10The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Great show! Wonderful to see the boys back together. Quick chewy versions of many great songs. No overt tension between band mates and no showboating. High energy and lots of personality. Great interaction with crowd. That being said the sound engineers were probably the worst I have ever experienced at a live show. This goes for the opening band as well. Since this reunion is probably a one time tour, it's a bummer that the sound was so bad!

    Exceeded my expectations

by ChippedShoulder on 4/16/10The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

I was rather amazed how good they sounded after such a long time. The last time I saw Pavement was in 1997 at the end of the Brighten the Corners tour. They were better last night. I would venture to say they were great last night.

Great set list, a little rusty but that is to be expected. Malkmus was sharp. I want the job of the guy that is their designated cow-bell, screamer and sound effects guru.

    SupeRad!

by CowboyDanarino on 4/16/10The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

They played all of old hits you could think of and only one off their latest, plus two encores! It was my first time seeing them live since I got into them right before they dispanded ten years ago. Hopefully we will see more of them in the future cause they ROCK!

Was that the question you asked?"

by Lee2010 on 4/16/10The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

"I'm waiting, waiting, waiting" no longer. The latest stop on Pavement's reunion tour far surpassed all expectations. SM and the boys paced themselves through an incredibly tight and inspired set just sort of two hours that included almost all of Slanted and Enchanted along with gems from the rest of the catalog. Last night put any memories of the fractiousness of the 1999 El Rey shows far out of my mind. The band of my dreams.

    Pavement was incredible

by JimmyFaFa on 4/16/10The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Having gotten into Pavement's music in 2004 I never had an opportunity to see them live (they had broken up by then)...so it was such a treat for my girlfriend and I to see them play their first US show at The Fox Pomona. If you're going to Coachella you must check them out!

Pavement brought it. All their members are so eccentric yet talented.
