About

Paul Mooney is one of the most dangerous and brilliant comic minds of our time. His first professional gig was writing for Richard Pryor, penning most of the hilarious routines for Pryor's "Saturday Night Live" appearance, co-writing material on the groundbreaking "Live On Sunset" and "Is It Something I Said" albums, and for Pryor's film "Jo Jo Dancer, You're Life Is Calling."

A talented comedic writer, Mooney has served as head writer for some of television's best comedies, including "The Richard Pryor Show," "Good Times" and the first year of Fox's "In Living Color," creating the hilarious "Homey the Clown" skit. He also wrote for Redd Foxx's "Sanford and Son" series as well as "Saturday Night Live." Most recently Mooney appeared on Comedy Central's "Chappelle's Show" and released a live stand up DVD, "Know Your History: Jesus Is Black and So Was Cleopatra."

Paul Mooney came into his own with his controversial and critically acclaimed, debut comedy album "Race," for which he received a GRAMMY nomination. His album "Master Piece" continues to stir anger, laughter, and thought. "I always drop in some history" he explains "It's knowledge. There's always a message in my comedy and you may not get it that night - it's like time bombs. It'll get you a week later. You'll understand." Be warned: this show is not for the easily offended.

    Not a good show

by Rintinton on 11/5/17B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

Spent a lot of money on the show to see Paul Mooney. He and Marsha Warfield were the headliners and I thought they would perform for most of the show. Instead there were 3 unknown comics who performed first- they were OK as warm up acts but I didn't pay to see them. Mooney only performed 15 minutes and WAS NOT FUNNY!! He spent a lot of time talking up a couple of audience members in the front seats and it was like a dull stupid conversation. I paid for actual jokes - not a back and forth conversation with the audience! Also Mooney seems to be past his prime as his usual comic genius was no where to be found. Mainly I'm disappointed in BB Kings as they charged a lot of money for a show headlined by famous comics who were onstage for less than an hour. Buyer Beware the next time.

Clearly I waited too long to see Paul Mooney. He is far from prime. I was very disappointed.

    I wish Paul the best

by Cnap64 on 2/13/17B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

Overheard some folks on line speaking about Paul's health. I didn't think much of it but I left the show feeling sad for Paul. I'm glad he's ok but he had trouble remembering his jokes let alone a punchline. I wish him and his family the best.

    Unfortunately passed prime performance years!

by Gbag on 2/13/17B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

It was wonderful seeing Mr. Mooney and Mr. Gregory. Their essence is still evident. However, their usual performance flair was not. Perhaps age or something else. It was sad to see them that way on the one hand. On the other, proud that they still have stamina to continue doing what they love for their die hard fans. We love them always. I hope they continue to have the stamina to do what they love and fans are able to embrace them. If their future performance is anything like this past one, I would warn you ahead of time not to expect the usual level of performance.

    Big Let Down

    by SG03 on 10/13/16Howard Theare - Washington

Saw Paul Mooney at his show with Dick Gregory in Washington, DC and could not have been more disappointed. He came on almost 30 minutes late and did his entire set mumbling to guests at the front tables. I couldn't tell if he was even lucid as his eyes were half opened and he was slouched over in a chair the entire time. To top it all off he didn't even know where he was! Asked us if we were from Emoryville, which apparently must be some time near CA as he thought he was in Oakland! Yes, a whole 3000 miles away! He didn't land one joke, which should have been easy given the current political climate. I was so embarrassed as I talked my friend into coming to this show based on passed stellar performances I've seen of his. What a difference a few years have made. He is nowhere near the witty, biting humorist he once was. I sat through the whole performance willing it to get better, sadly it only got worse. I wanted my money back.

    A Dissappointment

by ForEverPraise on 12/13/15Howard Theatre - Washington

Paul Mooney is too arrogant to say, "maybe I can't do this any longer". In the past, I had high respect for his work. I've always loved his work. But he really disappointed me. He spent too much time in a one-on-one conversation with the guests up front. At times, it almost seemed as though he was dozing off right in the middle of his presentation. I expected him to talk about Trump and his foolishness. I understand if he just can't perform like he used to because of his age (I'm probably just as old or older). But I think when people are spending their hard earned money to see you at your best, that's what they should get. Maybe he has a medical condition. If so, I pray he will get better. Paul, I hate to see you go out like that!

    Tragic

by JoseiDC on 12/9/15Howard Theatre - Washington

Paul Mooney was great. He was a bit ill (bad knee or something). Jokes flowed veeeeeeeery slowly. It was difficult for me to stay engaged. Dick Gregory was a total disaster. His comments about having sex with teenagers were disgusting. And he spoke to the audience as if we were ignorant, uneducated fools. I was disappointed, not entertained a bit.

Tragic waste of time and money - Paul Mooney

    by Roxie11820 on 12/9/15Howard Theatre - Washington

It was so sad to see him like this. I have seen him many times previously and thought he was hilarious. He must be ill or something. He rambled on and just wasn't funny. I pray he will do no further shows as he wasn't funny. This was so hard to watch. I know we all age but atleast do so privately. Very uncomfortable show. His timing and wit normally amaze me. He had none of this!! I am not trying to hit him while he is down but ... I wish him the best. He will never get my money again and more importantly my time!! Get well Paul Mooney.. I prefer to remember him when he was hilarious and witty.

Paul Mooney should hang it up

by LittleBridgette on 11/22/15B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

Terrible show. Paul Mooney looked like he didn't prepare any material. It was completely conversational with audience (which most of whom we couldn't hear since there is no mic in the audience). His jokes were old. They included jokes from the 70's about Sonny and Cher- nothing modern. He needed a handler to remember when to leave and when do certain things. I didn't laugh once. Dick Gregory is funnier. But show is observational. And again not really funny. Money wasted. I wish I could get the time back.

    Paul Mooney and Dick Gregory

by Anonymous on 11/22/15B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

Very disappointed in both comedians performances. It appeared that Paul didn't prepare any new material for the show. My husband and I overheard another couple state "He hasn't said anything funny yet". This was approximately half an hour into his performance. Dick Gregory made me chuckle a few times, but nothing to rave about. Maybe it's time for these icons to retire.

    Sad

by Angelflowers on 10/28/15Comedy - DC

Saw Paul Mooney and Dick Gregory at the Howard Theater this pass summer. It was a SOLD OUT SHOW! Was ready to get my rolling on the floor, almost wet my pants laugh on and was sorely disappointed. Had went to another show and wasn't disappointed but that was before Paul got sick. Maybe he needs more time to recover or it could be his age but was not funny, he didn't appear to be himself or like was ready to perform. He did more talking to random women and came across as more of a dirty ole man. He rambled on about how much he liked prostitutes because they showed all their goodies, I kept waiting for the punch line but there wasn't one. At one point he even had to review his list of jokes and could be heard talking to himself about which jokes he did already.....some of which he hadn't told cus he was so busy talking to random women in the audience. Dick Gregory was the absolute truth! He made the show but Paul needs to retire. Will not see again.
