About

"Watching Patti Smith perform live – for the first, second or fifth time – feels like a life-changing experience.”- THE INDEPENDENT (Field Day)

“It’s a performance destined for the festival’s All-Time Greatest list” – Glastonbury Mojo

It has been eight years since Patti Smith ‘the godmother of punk’ last toured Australia, and nearly 41 years since the release of her first and most celebrated recording Horses. Horses was conceived to be, in her description, “three chord rock merged with the power of the word.”

“Patti Smith gives a fresh force to songs she wrote 40 years ago” –Metro

“Horses and its shamanistic punk poet siren are undiminished 40 years on” theartsdesk.com

Best-selling author, performance poet & visual artist Patti Smith’s list of artistic accomplishments doesn’t end there. She is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, recipient of the Polar Music Prize, a human rights activist and also holds the honour of “Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres”  from the French Ministry of Culture.

She will be accompanied by two members of the original group, Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty, bassist / keyboardist Tony Shanahan, who has been a part of her band for twenty years and Andy York to perform Horses in its entirety during this not-to-be missed tour, as well as several time-honoured favourites.

In November of 1975, Patti Smith and her band recorded her debut album Horses at the famous Electric Lady Studios in New York City. An album that has come to be regarded as a seminal and landmark recording, that continues to have resonance and relevance for succeeding generations of musicians and artists. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Smith honour the lasting influence of Horses on this exclusive Australian tour.

“This is protest music. But it is protest with a fierce edge that seamlessly weaves a new politics into a rich legacy of rock-and-roll rebellion: She is celebrating a connection between music and movements that is swaggering and confident and more than ready to declare—as Smith does—that “we’re gonna change the fucking world!” ” – The Nation

“It will be a true, proud celebration.”  Patti Smith

As as ever, better than ever

by Tin knocker on 11/20/21Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

I wasn't sure what to expect and that's why I couldn't wait to see Patti Smith again. The last time I saw her in a performance was October 1978 at Cornell University. I think I remember $5.00 admission! To be honest I wasn't really interested in going but a friend in my dorm convinced me to go so I did. What a great session! Of course I'd listened to Patti's group on WVBR and in my dorm room but to experience the music was another thing altogether. It's funny here as well, if not for my wife buying these tickets I probably wouldn't have gone to this show either! Fast forward to 2021 and 43 years later I was wondering how would the original experience would compare and I was amazed by Patti and Lenny Kaye. Their voices, Lenny's guitar and Patti's life stories were wonderful. I felt she was singing and talking to us. I hope she comes back to UPAC, we'll be there!

    Phenomenal Show

by Seventies Kid on 11/16/21Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

Patti Smith along with her longtime Guitarist Lenny Kaye performed about six songs from her catalog along with readings and storytelling of her personal experiences. Her voice was clear and strong and the experience was a fantastic experience. See her if you can…

    Patti was as usual great.

by J. W. on 11/16/21Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

Patti appeared along with her great guitarist Lenny Kaye. Patti mixed some of her songs along with reading of poetry and her books such as Just Friend and M Train. She also talked how great it is to be on stage again because of the Covid situation and how great a story teller she is and can take a simple thing like traveling to Kingston with Lenny and make it intersting. I have seen Patti about eight times now. I had great seats, last time I saw her I had a front row center seat and got J. D. Daugherty's broken drum stick at the end of the concert.

    Patti Smith, twice

by Skeeter on 3/17/20The Fillmore - San Francisco

Patti Smith is a force of nature, and a truly great rock and roll artist. And she was playing the legendary Fillmore, and we, despite our grey hairs, were there both nights. Patti, as well, loves the Fillmore and the Bay Area crowds. She was fantastic both nights, in full and potent voice, and still has that confident swagger! The set lists were similar but she mixed up the order which gave us, who went both nights, a sense of excitement. As she is a talented writer and spoken word artist she read timely passages from both of her books. Truly two great nights! Thank you Patti and the Fillmore.

    Always inspired

by Toshi on 3/13/20The Fillmore - San Francisco

I always love every opportunity I have to see and hear Patti. I thought the concert was great! My kids on the other hand said they would’ve liked to hear her play some of her other songs. They said her Horses concert was their favorite. My kids are in their 20’s, and grew up listening and then seeing her live mostly in SanFrancisco at the Fillmore several times. It’s always unforgettable.

    Been missing out😠

by Chris on 3/12/20The Fillmore - San Francisco

I had not paid much attention to Patti until a couple of years ago. I tried to get tickets to a show and surprise, all sold out. Same problem next year. This year I aggressively pursued, and got, a ticket! Next year, I go to 2 shows. She was that good.

    Powerful, authentic and charming Patti

by Bonbopn on 3/11/20The Fillmore - San Francisco

The Fillmore was vibrating with energy and excitement to see our adored Patti. The crowd was friendly and kindly. We were nervously jocular about "defensible space" as we stood shoulder to shoulder in front of the stage in anticipation. Then came Ray...her amazing guitarist/songwriter. OMG...as good as he was it was not the time for that moody, subdued playing. After the first couple, people looked at each other and I heard words like "dirge", "unclear on what an opening act is," etc. We didn't let the buzz kill last, tho, and all was stellar when PS appeared. I love how she looks at us all, and talks to us. Its like...she can do what she wants and we will love it. Even the Lord's Prayer, and readings. If it means something to her, it means something to me. Her voice was so meaningful, sincere and intensely real. What we needed at this difficult time.

Patti still sounds like she did in the 1970s even in her 70s. Full voice, rockin' out, tons of attitude.

    Un. Believebly A May Zing

    by M. M. on 5/20/19The Met Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Patti Smith totally killed it in every single way possible. She's still got a great voice, energy, passion and commitment to music and her fans. Her song re arrangements were creative as hell and she did a great job blending songs. Audience involvement and interaction was fantastic. I had the best seats, too. 6 rows back on the aisle and the side she played most often to. And she spits, and rocks and called out the effer in the audience. Down side was people standing and blocking the show toward the end. And the drunks in the aisle. Ah. Well. $50.00 parking? Tad much. Fabulous. Fantastic. Frippery. At it's Finest.!!!

    Patti still has it!!!!

by Len on 5/7/19Webster Hall - New York

Saw Patti and her band at the newly renovated Ritz (others may call it Webster Hall, not I) and was blown away. I would have been happy just to have witnessed "Are You Experienced". The entire show could not have been much better. Bravo!!
