About

Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny is one of the most renowned artists of his generation. Across nearly 50 years, the endlessly creative Metheny has released 11 solo albums, 13 albums with his band The Pat Metheny Group, four live albums, and four compilation albums, and has won a whopping 20 Grammys. Specializing in contemporary jazz, Latin jazz, and jazz fusion, Metheny is the only person in history to win Grammys in 12 different categories.

Born in 1954 in Lee Falls, Missouri, Metheny (who is the younger brother of trumpeter Mike Metheny), began playing guitar at age 12. As a teenager, he taught at the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music and made his recording debut in 1974 with Paul Bley and Jaco Pastorius.

In the mid '70s, Metheny played in Gary Burton's group, where he met keyboardist Lyle Mays. The two ended up forming The Pat Metheny Group with bassist Mark Egan and drummer Dan Gottlieb. A risk-taking jazz player, Metheny's 1980 album 80/81 featured avant-garde tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman and 15-time-Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist/composer Michael Brecker. A few years later, Metheny formed a trio with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins; and 1985 saw the release of Song X with his jazz hero Ornette Coleman. Around this time, Metheny also collaborated with Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Roy Haynes, and Joshua Redman.

In the '90s, Metheny leaned into his experimental side even further with the noise-driven Zero Tolerance For Silence (1994). That same year, he also made his Blue Note Records debut with John Scofield on I Can See Your House From Here. The following year, Metheny and his band released We Live Here. Prolific as ever, Metheny released 1996's Quartet and his score for the film Passaggio Per Il Paradiso.

In 1997, Metheny and bassist Charlie Haden recorded an acoustic album as a duo called Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories). Soon after, The Pat Metheny Group released the album Imaginary Day. In the late '90s, Metheny did a duet album with Jim Hall and scored Warner Bros.' A Map Of The World.

Moving into the 21st century, Metheny and his band released 2002's Speaking Of Now, 2003's acoustic solo album One Quiet Night, and got the group back together for 2005's Way Up. In 2006, Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau released their joint album, Metheny Mehldau, and followed it up with 2008's Day Trip.

Into the 2010s, Metheny remained as prolific as ever, releasing 2010's Orchestrion, which, via the use of a MIDI-powered "robot" orchestra, Sound On Sound declared "an unparalleled technological feat." In 2011, Metheny released a solo acoustic album, What's It All About, featuring covers of contemporary pop performers such as Paul Simon and John Lennon, among others. What's It All About won a Grammy for Best New Age Album. In 2012, Metheny teamed up with saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Antonio Sánchez, and bassist Ben Williams to release Unity Band, which won Best Jazz Instrumental album at the Grammys in 2013.

In spring 2013, Metheny reimagined works from John Zorn's Masada Book Two with Tap: Book of Angels Volume 20. All the while, his Unity Group continued touring and went back into the studio, releasing Kin in February 2014. The next year, Metheny paid tribute to the famed bassist Eberhard Weber, who suffered a stroke in 2007 and has not performed live since. Metheny shared the stage with saxophonist Jan Garbarek and vibraphonist Gary Burton, and the tribute, Hommage à Eberhard Weber, was released in September 2015.

In more recent years, Metheny has released 2016's Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny (with trumpeter Cuong Vu) and toured the world for two years as a quartet with Sánchez, Malaysian/Australian bassist Linda May Han Oh, and pianist Gwilym Simcock. Their debut album, From This Place, was released in February 2020.

In 2020, Metheny left longtime label WEA/Nonesuch and joined BMG's Modern Recordings. His 2021 label debut, Road To The Sun, featured Metheny in the composer role; he wrote music for classical guitarist Jason Vieaux and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Also in 2021, Metheny released Side-Eye NYC (V1.IV), which featured a rotating cast of younger musicians, including drummer Marcus Gilmore and keyboardist James Francies.

Pat Metheny never disappoints; he is a musical and techno genius who takes the audience on a journey through the highest levels of musical enjoyment. This concert confirms, once again, that Pat Metheny is unmatched as a musical innovator. I had an absolutely great time!

    A wonderful experience!

by Star on 3/29/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Pat Metheny delivered, beautifully! This was my second time seeing him live and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing him share his unparelled talent. He shared aspects of his life at various points throughout his performance as it related to his guitar-life, which was a nice, welcoming addition. The Atlanta Symphony Hall is a beautiful, well-kept venue. The seating was great and the bar offerings was top notch.

The Virtuoso was great, but the Group was missed.

by RCJr on 3/28/24Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

He is a truly gifted musician. I was expecting The Pat Metheny Group. I was disappointed the group was not in the house. Pat was great, I could only imagine how exciting the evening would have been with the full band.

    A real Sleeper-Dud show!

    by Guiatarzilla on 3/27/24

Let me preface I've been in the music industry for over 30 years as a guitarist/producer and work with a lot of iconic guitarists in the studio. I am an old fan of the Metheny group and saw the "Off Ramp"and "Letter from Home"tours. But I just saw Metheny with his one man act in Orlando in March 2024. Man what a sleeper show. Obviously he is a talented guitarist, but whew dude I just about fell asleep with his baritone acoustic renditions of Glenn Campbell's "Wichita Lineman"and Dion Warwick's "Alfie". Is this really the best he can offer after all of these years? I know he has a cult following, but he is definitely a bit over rated. I mean in 1999 when he won best rock instrumental performance by the Grammy's for "The Roots of Coincidence"there were much better performances by rock artists like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Santana, Steve Vai. On top of that 2 nights earlier I saw the Satch/Vai show at the Hard Rock Live and man that was the real deal! Talk about talent, tone and showmanship! Blew away Metheny.

by Maggie on 3/24/24Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

I was introduced to Pat Metheny's music from the soundtrack of 'A Falcon and the Snowman' . Through the 80's, 90's, up to the present time I loved this music. I was thrilled to see him in person. His guitar playing is magnificent!

    Pat Metheny

by Jack on 3/23/24Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

This was an unusual concert for Pat - a solo performance taking us through his broad range of composition and sound. It was also a rare opportunity to hear him tell stories about his development and thinking as a musician. It was wonderful evening with a brilliant artist, who also comes across as a nice, unpretentious, humble person. I give this concert 5 stars plus.

    Great show

by Wendy on 3/22/24Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

I have seen many of his shows, this one wasn’t my favorite with the acoustic guitar, I prefer his jazz electric guitar but he is a virtuoso and I appreciate everything he does.

    A Master At Work

by friedmantbo on 3/22/24Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

This was an amazing show. The performance opened with some amazing musicianship. However, things just got better with every minute. If my timing was correct, Pat Metheny played for over two hours and 20 minutes without an intermission. Every time he stopped at the end of the performance. The audience stood up and asked for more. Pat obliged for at least four encores. It would have been a pleasure to stay even longer. Pat showcased a number of interesting guitar styles on a variety of beautiful instruments. It was an honor to be in the audience. The park is a wonderful theater. Acoustics are great and seating is very comfortable.

    OUTRAGEOUS

by BEETLE on 3/22/24Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

I saw Pat Matheny several years ago when Lyle was still alive. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I was afraid I would be terribly sad without Lyle there and do wonder if it is lonely for Pat onstage without Lyle. Pat was as incredible as ever. It was a magnificent show. I loved him speaking. Normally, I do not care for much story telling but he found a balance that was so interesting and delightful and I loved it. Hope it helps his loneliness if he is lonely without his longtime partner.

by Sasso on 3/22/24Wells Hall at The Parker - Ft Lauderdale

It was a very unique concert. Almost a one to one experience with Pat and the public. The concert was Pat, his guitars, and the public. He played the decades of different music and styles and we enjoyed every minute of the 2 1/2 hours concert. Highly recommended.

Still Loving It 35 years later!!!

by Jackie on 3/21/24The Lyric Theatre - Birmingham

I absolutely loved the concert!!! It was just the right amount of people. The perfect venue! And Pat was amazing as usual. The man has so much talent. I was 19 when I first heard his music (the Group), and here I am at 55 and still amazed! I totally enjoyed it.
