About

Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny is one of the most renowned artists of his generation. Across nearly 50 years, the endlessly creative Metheny has released 11 solo albums, 13 albums with his band The Pat Metheny Group, four live albums, and four compilation albums, and has won a whopping 20 Grammys. Specializing in contemporary jazz, Latin jazz, and jazz fusion, Metheny is the only person in history to win Grammys in 12 different categories.

Born in 1954 in Lee Falls, Missouri, Metheny (who is the younger brother of trumpeter Mike Metheny), began playing guitar at age 12. As a teenager, he taught at the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music and made his recording debut in 1974 with Paul Bley and Jaco Pastorius.

In the mid '70s, Metheny played in Gary Burton's group, where he met keyboardist Lyle Mays. The two ended up forming The Pat Metheny Group with bassist Mark Egan and drummer Dan Gottlieb. A risk-taking jazz player, Metheny's 1980 album 80/81 featured avant-garde tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman and 15-time-Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist/composer Michael Brecker. A few years later, Metheny formed a trio with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins; and 1985 saw the release of Song X with his jazz hero Ornette Coleman. Around this time, Metheny also collaborated with Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Roy Haynes, and Joshua Redman.

In the '90s, Metheny leaned into his experimental side even further with the noise-driven Zero Tolerance For Silence (1994). That same year, he also made his Blue Note Records debut with John Scofield on I Can See Your House From Here. The following year, Metheny and his band released We Live Here. Prolific as ever, Metheny released 1996's Quartet and his score for the film Passaggio Per Il Paradiso.

In 1997, Metheny and bassist Charlie Haden recorded an acoustic album as a duo called Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories). Soon after, The Pat Metheny Group released the album Imaginary Day. In the late '90s, Metheny did a duet album with Jim Hall and scored Warner Bros.' A Map Of The World.

Moving into the 21st century, Metheny and his band released 2002's Speaking Of Now, 2003's acoustic solo album One Quiet Night, and got the group back together for 2005's Way Up. In 2006, Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau released their joint album, Metheny Mehldau, and followed it up with 2008's Day Trip.

Into the 2010s, Metheny remained as prolific as ever, releasing 2010's Orchestrion, which, via the use of a MIDI-powered "robot" orchestra, Sound On Sound declared "an unparalleled technological feat." In 2011, Metheny released a solo acoustic album, What's It All About, featuring covers of contemporary pop performers such as Paul Simon and John Lennon, among others. What's It All About won a Grammy for Best New Age Album. In 2012, Metheny teamed up with saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Antonio Sánchez, and bassist Ben Williams to release Unity Band, which won Best Jazz Instrumental album at the Grammys in 2013.

In spring 2013, Metheny reimagined works from John Zorn's Masada Book Two with Tap: Book of Angels Volume 20. All the while, his Unity Group continued touring and went back into the studio, releasing Kin in February 2014. The next year, Metheny paid tribute to the famed bassist Eberhard Weber, who suffered a stroke in 2007 and has not performed live since. Metheny shared the stage with saxophonist Jan Garbarek and vibraphonist Gary Burton, and the tribute, Hommage à Eberhard Weber, was released in September 2015.

In more recent years, Metheny has released 2016's Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny (with trumpeter Cuong Vu) and toured the world for two years as a quartet with Sánchez, Malaysian/Australian bassist Linda May Han Oh, and pianist Gwilym Simcock. Their debut album, From This Place, was released in February 2020.

In 2020, Metheny left longtime label WEA/Nonesuch and joined BMG's Modern Recordings. His 2021 label debut, Road To The Sun, featured Metheny in the composer role; he wrote music for classical guitarist Jason Vieaux and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Also in 2021, Metheny released Side-Eye NYC (V1.IV), which featured a rotating cast of younger musicians, including drummer Marcus Gilmore and keyboardist James Francies.

    One of the best ever!

by JazzNut on 3/21/24The Lyric Theatre - Birmingham

Pat Metheny is always mesmerizing and The Secret Story tour is an all-time favorite. However, this is a new favorite. He was truly amazing as a solo performer. And hearing him talk about himself, his backstory and his guitars was a bonus! Each melody crescendos to a spectacular finale!! This is my 7th Metheny concert - can't wait for the next one... PS - The Lyric Theatre in Birmingham, AL is the perfect venue for such a performance. So beautiful!

A real artist - still curious, playful and creative

by Kiralu on 3/21/24Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

A fantastic concert by master of guitars Pat Metheny. Creative, funny, witty, surprising and wonderful. The Orpheum was a good place for his almost scientific yet very playful and entertaining research on the spectrum of guitar usage. Thank You.

    Entertaining Solo Show

by MR Files on 3/20/24The Lyric Theatre - Birmingham

I was not sure what it would be like to sit through a two hour solo performance. Pat Metheny put on an incredible solo show. It was over before I knew it. I wanted more, so I purchased some vinyl after the show! I recommended to my daughter to catch his show in New York City.

Not really what we were expecting

by JayJohn on 3/20/24Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

I guess we missed the part about this being a solo tour. I think we would have enjoyed it more if the band was with him. He did say during the performance that he was trying something new. Well for us, it missed the mark. We also didn't care for the automated computerized backup instruments behind the curtain. The performance as a whole was a bit boring.

    Great experience

by Tom on 3/20/24Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

I expected a lot, but the artist exceeded all my expectations. I think that the whole audience would agree with me.

Pat Metheny was transcendent. The theater was beautiful and intimate. The audience was in love. One of the best shows I’ve seen in years

Pat was Amazing! Too much noise from audience

by Ruokkt on 3/19/24Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

Pat Methany is a musical genius! And to hear him talk was an extra bonus. My husband was over the moon with the opportunity to see him in concert. What we found disconcerting was the number of people who kept getting up and getting drinks or just going in and out. Also we were sitting towards the back of the Orpheum theatre and the noise in the lobby could be heard clearly; ice being poured. people talking.

    Worth the wait!

by Kadu on 3/19/24Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

Pat Metheny was incredible. Been listening to him since I was 16 years old. I am 63 now. He has always been my go to music in my daily commute. My wife gave me 2 tickets for Christmas 2023, 2 seats smack dab in the middle of the 3rd row. This was my 1st time seeing Pat, and I am looking for the opportunity to see him again. -Kadu

    Incredible musician

    by TC on 1/28/24

I’ve been going to Pats concerts for over 30 years. First at the Beacon Theater in NYC with the original PM group and Lyle Mays. I remember thinking, how do so many unbelievably talented people end up in one group? Over the years I saw him in many different venues around the NY NJ area. In fact I just saw him recently with my 23 year old son again at the Beaon last spring for the “Side Eye” concert. The crowd was a lot older but Pat didn’t age and played as good as ever. Bitter sweet feelings set in from the loss of Lyle Mays however his new group was awsome. This guy is a National Treasure to jazz music, equal to if not more so than Miles Davis. Any true music fan should not miss seeing him at least once

Pat...A True Gentleman, a Scholar, and Extremely Tolerant!

by tombones99 on 11/6/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

Amazing show in spite of two drunk idiots that were front and center, literally the best seats in the house but they chose to heckle and annoy him and were eventually removed. Pat rose above and kept his composure. He is light years beyond most performers and has the stage presence to deliver every time! Often he looks like he's having more fun than the audience! Must see for anyone that loves guitar, Jazz, and are fans of good human beings.

    disappointing but interesting

by mike on 11/4/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

I like PM's music, have since the 1980s. I saw him live in 2019, a great concert full of his great music, mesmerizing. The recent concert on October 28, 2023 was totally different. More of an anthology collage without a lot of production. He talked quite a bit about his history as a musician, interesting. Then brought out out a whole lot of musical instruments electronically controlled and programed by him on the stage, which was entertaining and fascinating. Some how I got the impression that this invention of his was something he put together during the pandemic. This concert was not a live reproduction of his wonderful music I was hoping to hear. Nevertheless very good and got at least three standing ovations. The venue Magnolia in El Cajon probably does not have a bad seat in the house except for the seats themselves which are not very big or comfortable, no padding. Acoustics are fair. The place itself has very little character built out of concrete and the drinks were way to expensive. One restroom per sex, that is all. I really do not know what they could do with the place to give it more ambiance. Of course it has some great performers there recently.

Pat Metheny @ Magnolia, San Diego

by RKaye on 11/2/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

Pat Metheny is an amazing guitarist & artist, I have seen him more than once and each time it's something unexpected. He is perhaps the most accomplished Jazz musician of the current generation of performing artists. His performance exceeded my expectations. The audience, however, did not. Even tho asked to turn off and put away phones during the show, many people did not. And one couple (in the front row!) were asked to leave for being obnoxious while he was performing; Pat had to stop playing because of not being able to concentrate above the chatter. I wish people would show more respect to such high-level musicians. And The Magnolia is a really nice venue; I will be visiting it again. But the staff should also stop talking during performances. It's not a party, it's a performance.

    First time seeing Pat Metheny

by new fan on 10/31/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

This was a splendid evening of music of all kinds, by just one artist, playing all the instruments -- how many different guitars?? A humble but personable performer, I learned so much, from and about him, in just one evening. A really great show.

    Best interactive show.

by musiclover on 10/31/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

Usually Pat Metheny does not speak much during his performance. But this show was totally different. A great interactive show and performance. Explaining the background of each music piece and the guitars used masterful played. A small interruption did not prevent him to continue the show. Thank you Pat Meheny.

    Pat Metheny

by Lscarcia on 10/31/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

Great show. Pat amazes me at what an amazing musician he is. I did miss seeing a live drummer, bass player, keyboard player and percussionist. But he did a great job as a one man show. I have been going to his concerts since 1980. My favorite was The Pat Metheny Group.

    Distraction

by Glenn on 10/31/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

I usually don’t leave reviews, but I think I should this time. For the first half of the show, there was a couple sitting front row centerstage who were incredibly distracting to everyone around them, including Pat Metheny himself. Finally about midway through security escorted them out and I have to say Pat Matheny handled it so well. He was incredibly professional, but unfortunately, the first half of the show was distracting to say the least.

    Genius At Work

by PLowe on 10/31/23The Magnolia - El Cajon

Although almost 40 years between concerts for me Pat hasn't lost a lick. Whether hearing his songs for the first or 100th time you find your mind lost in his mesmerizing virtuosity, appreciating new soaring sounds and experiences with each listen. The full sound he was able to bring the audience by laying down different tracks than jamming with his overdubs and mad scientist glockenspiel percussion contraption achieved a complex integrated level of instrumentation and orchestration no solo act conceivably could. He takes you on a trip with the guitar that redefines the possibilities of the instrument.
