About

Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny is one of the most renowned artists of his generation. Across nearly 50 years, the endlessly creative Metheny has released 11 solo albums, 13 albums with his band The Pat Metheny Group, four live albums, and four compilation albums, and has won a whopping 20 Grammys. Specializing in contemporary jazz, Latin jazz, and jazz fusion, Metheny is the only person in history to win Grammys in 12 different categories.

Born in 1954 in Lee Falls, Missouri, Metheny (who is the younger brother of trumpeter Mike Metheny), began playing guitar at age 12. As a teenager, he taught at the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music and made his recording debut in 1974 with Paul Bley and Jaco Pastorius.

In the mid '70s, Metheny played in Gary Burton's group, where he met keyboardist Lyle Mays. The two ended up forming The Pat Metheny Group with bassist Mark Egan and drummer Dan Gottlieb. A risk-taking jazz player, Metheny's 1980 album 80/81 featured avant-garde tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman and 15-time-Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist/composer Michael Brecker. A few years later, Metheny formed a trio with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins; and 1985 saw the release of Song X with his jazz hero Ornette Coleman. Around this time, Metheny also collaborated with Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Roy Haynes, and Joshua Redman.

In the '90s, Metheny leaned into his experimental side even further with the noise-driven Zero Tolerance For Silence (1994). That same year, he also made his Blue Note Records debut with John Scofield on I Can See Your House From Here. The following year, Metheny and his band released We Live Here. Prolific as ever, Metheny released 1996's Quartet and his score for the film Passaggio Per Il Paradiso.

In 1997, Metheny and bassist Charlie Haden recorded an acoustic album as a duo called Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories). Soon after, The Pat Metheny Group released the album Imaginary Day. In the late '90s, Metheny did a duet album with Jim Hall and scored Warner Bros.' A Map Of The World.

Moving into the 21st century, Metheny and his band released 2002's Speaking Of Now, 2003's acoustic solo album One Quiet Night, and got the group back together for 2005's Way Up. In 2006, Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau released their joint album, Metheny Mehldau, and followed it up with 2008's Day Trip.

Into the 2010s, Metheny remained as prolific as ever, releasing 2010's Orchestrion, which, via the use of a MIDI-powered "robot" orchestra, Sound On Sound declared "an unparalleled technological feat." In 2011, Metheny released a solo acoustic album, What's It All About, featuring covers of contemporary pop performers such as Paul Simon and John Lennon, among others. What's It All About won a Grammy for Best New Age Album. In 2012, Metheny teamed up with saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Antonio Sánchez, and bassist Ben Williams to release Unity Band, which won Best Jazz Instrumental album at the Grammys in 2013.

In spring 2013, Metheny reimagined works from John Zorn's Masada Book Two with Tap: Book of Angels Volume 20. All the while, his Unity Group continued touring and went back into the studio, releasing Kin in February 2014. The next year, Metheny paid tribute to the famed bassist Eberhard Weber, who suffered a stroke in 2007 and has not performed live since. Metheny shared the stage with saxophonist Jan Garbarek and vibraphonist Gary Burton, and the tribute, Hommage à Eberhard Weber, was released in September 2015.

In more recent years, Metheny has released 2016's Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny (with trumpeter Cuong Vu) and toured the world for two years as a quartet with Sánchez, Malaysian/Australian bassist Linda May Han Oh, and pianist Gwilym Simcock. Their debut album, From This Place, was released in February 2020.

In 2020, Metheny left longtime label WEA/Nonesuch and joined BMG's Modern Recordings. His 2021 label debut, Road To The Sun, featured Metheny in the composer role; he wrote music for classical guitarist Jason Vieaux and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Also in 2021, Metheny released Side-Eye NYC (V1.IV), which featured a rotating cast of younger musicians, including drummer Marcus Gilmore and keyboardist James Francies.

    Metheny Keeps Improving

by Richard O on 4/13/24State Theatre - Portland

Pat Metheny may be almost 70, but every time I see him play he has a new skill, has explored some new avenue, or has something different to share musically. Amazing! Unfortunately, the State Theater's incredibly loud hand dryers in the restrooms were very audible at inopportune times during this (often quiet) concert. They should be unplugged for a performance like this so the audience and artist are not jarred by their annoying whooshing sound interrupting the beautiful music.

Excellent Concert with Pat. Very intimate venue.

by JoeW on 4/7/24Lexington Opera House - Lexington

The evening went very well. Restaurants close at hand for dinner before. The concert sound was excellent, with Pat Metheny playing guitars being the feature instruments. The whole experience was very enjoyable.

    A bucket list experience

    by Bret on 4/6/24

"Let me invite you into my living room to tell the story of my musical career..."should probably be the long name for this tour. One of the better 2 hours I've spent in a while. Though I had the misfortune of being seated next to three cretins, they couldn't ruin an immensely enjoyable musical evening in Charlotte. I did have the incredible good fortune of speaking to Pat at the hotel after the show, though my attempt at explaining our shared birth-date probably failed. Nevertheless, he thanked me for letting him in and I thanked him for a great show.

Just go and thank me later

by Shamrock9221 on 4/6/24Lexington Opera House - Lexington

Unbelievable performance. Starts out slow (medleys), builds to a climax (multiple guitar looping) and ends the way it started (2nd encore). Whew! What a show.

Wonderful concert in a wonderful venue! I’ve never seen Metheny live. I’m thankful he came to Lexington and played the Opera House. His skillful playing and the excellent acoustics combined to make for a memorable evening.

    Amazing Artist

by Russ C on 4/4/24Lexington Opera House - Lexington

As a young person I haven’t been in the Metheny fan base as long as many others have, but I’ve been lucky to see him twice over the past year now. He’s a legendary musician and an inspiration to my own journey. The concert experience was great; there was something in it for everybody. It’s an intimate setting so you can actually experience the music. A fantastic concert overall; thanks to Pat for sharing his music with us in Kentucky.

    A One-Man Symphony

by LGS on 4/4/24Lexington Opera House - Lexington

Pat Metheny has a work ethic like few performers. When he comes to the stage, he invests in the performance and doesn't stop until it's over. No intermission, just wall-to-wall music. Uncharacteristically, in this program he spends a little time talking to the audience about his music, which was refreshing coming from a guy who almost never says anything on stage but lets the music speak for him. I enjoyed his thoughts and reflections, the quiet authority he exudes, and to his credit, they were very personal, but succinct and didn't detract from the main event, his music. Employing a variety of instruments and electronic devices, he takes the audience on a journey through many styles, sounds, and textures, taking us places we never thought the guitar could go. He plays with such mastery and evident freedom from any barriers of technique, he seems able to express himself perfectly through the instrument. This was one of the most satisfying concerts I've attended in years. My wife and I have talked about it off and on frequently.

Pat was an Outstanding One Man Show!

by PeteC on 4/2/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Pat gave a great performance. I've seen him a number of times dating back to the 80's, when he and I were both younger. I'm amazed that Pat is still able to perform at such a high level. It was awesome and the Dream Box Tour is not to be missed.

    Perfect!

by Pat Metheny Fan on 3/30/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

A perfect show, as usual. It'd be pretty hard to find someone else that could put on a one man show like that. There was a huge variety of styles, and you get a lot more insight into his playing when he's the only one up there. Pat Metheny is a master guitarist and he never disappoints. I've seen him 7 or 8 times, so that's been my experience anyway.

    PAT METHENY — ENCORE

by Brick Pollitt on 3/30/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

My wife and I first saw The Pat Metheny Group playing in a cafeteria on UGA’s campus around 1980. It was at that first introduction to his incredible blend of jazz that we fell in love with his extraordinary musical talents. Fast forward 44 years and Pat Metheny is still showcasing his unparalleled musical talents. But instead of a cafeteria, he’s playing Symphony Hall. This was our second time seeing Pat in this venue. Each show is always better than before. His talents have been refined and matured like a fine wine. Pat put on an intense, charismatic, exceptional, impassioned display of talent. His one man show was nothing less than remarkable. To play a variety of guitars, explaining each one with a fervor and pride that only a father could do, made it obvious that his guitars are treated like his own children. To perform for 2 1/2 hours without a break, or even a sip of water, was simply a dedication and commitment to his performance as an artist. After multiple encores, Pat and his team took his children protectively back stage and packed each one carefully for the next city for those lucky fans to enjoy. 😊 Encore!

    A Phenomenal Evening!

by Phyllis on 3/29/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

If I could leave ten stars, I would! I have been a fan of Pat Metheny for forty years but had never seen him in concert. So of course, he was on my bucket list. I wasn't sure what to expect since he was solo. I was blown away - he gave an autobiography of his musical career and played so many types of guitars (I had no idea there are that many) that my head was spinning. I have been to scores of memorable concerts - and this one is in my top three. It was truly amazing to witness such a gifted artist doing what he loves with such humility and grace.

    Pat Metheny concert in Atlanta

by Rcboxz@aol.com on 3/29/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Where do I begin? The man is a virtuoso and I wish I was within the 1% of attendees who understood the level of skill being exhibited. That being said, the musicality and entertainment level was a 10, no matter the listeners musical level. What struck me as well was the comment Pat made early on about not speaking much in his previous shows. I found Pat to be engaging, personable, and really enjoyed his interactions with the audience.

    Great musician and inventor

by Andromeduh on 3/29/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Pat was 100% alone on the stage - just him, a slew of guitars, (mostly acoustic, some quite specialized), and we were treated to a couple hours of his enormous catalog plus several personal stories, each told in a concise and interesting way. What he's able to do with an acoustic guitar - especially the hybrid baritone configuration and the Pikasso guitar - is impressive. He also used a looper to add melodic layers and rhythm to some songs, and he did a bit of electric shredding, too. That monstrous contraption that looks like it came out of a Dr. Seuss story, (dubbed the orchestrion), is distracting and, to me, not very musical...felt more like a noisy gimmick. But his inventiveness, both musically and technically, continues to impress as it has throughout his career. For my taste, I prefer seeing him perform with a band, but this is an interesting departure and well worth the ticket.

    Very Disappointed 😞

by Storm on 3/29/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Basically sat on a chair and played acoustic guitars. No band or anything. Most of audience was either sleep or got up and walked out. Horrible! We walked out about an hour into the show. Wish I could get my money back 😪

    The Wizard of Jazz

by JohnnyJazz on 3/29/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

I was turned on to Pat and Lyle’s magic back in 1978 with the first group album (white album) and have been hooked ever since. Pat is now keeping the flame alive as a solo act on this tour, looking back over his amazing career, and paying homage to the guitar in its various forms. Really enjoy his mindshare as he talks more to audience during this tour. Expect some cool surprises! Pat never disappoints.
