About

Owl City is the musical brainchild of Adam Young, who launched the project in 2007 while living at his parents' home in Owatonna, Minnesota. Troubled by insomnia, Young began spending his evenings in the household basement, where a computer and several instruments provided a diversion from his sleeping patterns. He eventually combined those diversions into a blend of electronica and emo-pop, using little more than his computer and various keyboards to record the material. Songs were uploaded to MySpace upon completion, and Young began attracting a surprising amount of attention on the networking site. Of particular note was "Hello Seattle," a fabricated ode to the Emerald City whose viral popularity earned Young a record contract with Universal Republic.

Ocean Eyes, his first album for the label, was released in 2009, coinciding with the launch of Owl City's first national tour. While on the road, Young watched as "Fireflies" became one of the year's most popular singles, eventually topping the charts in several countries (including the U.S.) and selling more than three million copies. A deluxe edition of the album appeared in 2010, featuring seven bonus tracks as well as the original track list, and Universal Records capitalized on the buzz by also reissuing Maybe I'm Dreaming and Of June, both of which had been self-released several years earlier. An Airplane Carried Me to Bed, an album of acoustic pop songs that predated the Owl City project, followed in 2010. Technically a side project, the album was released under a different moniker, Sky Sailing. Young returned to Owl City in 2011 with All Things Bright and Beautiful, his first collection of new material in years. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi

owl city was so fun & lighthearted

by lliizz on 9/26/09Grog Shop - Cleveland

I loved that there were live drums. It added so much. It made it less like they were just playing the recordings. Also, Breanne Düren, the female vocalist in a few of his recorded songs, added backup vocals. Loved that. Also, I believe I saw a cellist and a violinist off to the side. Awesome setup. Adam young's voice is as pitch perfect live as it is on the recordings. As for the opening acts: Unicorn Kid was great. He really got the crowd excited before Owl City performed. But I am stumped as to why they put him first, and followed him with Kate Havnevik. She was great, but very mellow. I don't think the cleveland crowd responded to her in the way she really deserves.

by cupcake4bearcub on 9/25/09The Intersection - Grand Rapids

The Owl City show was amazing from beginning to end. Unicorn Kid was out of this world! He had the whole place jumpin'. And he was a super nice guy! Kate Havnevik has the voice of an angel! And then Adam Young came out and everyone went nuts! It was a really fun show and there was enough energy in that venue to power the whole city!

Owl City was totally....ENTERTAINING & FUN!

by MuskegonSkylover on 9/25/09The Intersection - Grand Rapids

We had a blast even though we were the oldest in the crowd pretty much. But...we didn't let that bother us one bit. All ages welcome! We took lots of pics, we danced, met new people, the music was fun and different. They seemed to be a tad loud for the Intersection and hard to hear their lyrics but again, all in all...it was a great time and experience. My son introduced me to Owl City & I've enjoyed listening to them ever since. Great to hear such creative lyrics in their songs.

Owl City is a must see!

    by Jesskimo25 on 9/25/09Grog Shop - Cleveland

Fabulous show, Adam Young did not disappoint! For being a "shy" Minnesota boy, he sure does have a good stage presence. He also had good openers, and Breanne joined him in backup vocals and strings for an altogether wonderful musical experience. To anyone to enjoys his music, don't miss out on seeing him live! I drove over 2 hours one way to see the show and it was worth every second. Love Owl City!!!

    Owl Who

by Matthew999 on 9/25/09The Intersection - Grand Rapids

I was highly disappointed in the show. Unicorn Kid was amazing very high energy and put on a great show. Owl City's level's were way off causing major echo in the building and you weren't able to hear any vocals at all. Also disappointed in the length of the show is was over by 9pm but the website said it would run until 11pm????

    OWL CITY YAY!!

by Ambis on 9/25/09The Intersection - Grand Rapids

It was one of the best shows I have gone to in a long time!! All except for the crowd, which was mostly teenagers, who were very rude and kept pushing myself and my brother and sister out of the way so they could get closer to the stage, and we were close, but eventually we moved to the back of the crowd, and had a better view and more fun back behind the audience. I hope people at the next show don't act like that, it was very disappointing that people were acting like that.

    Owl City rocked!

by freakforHim on 9/22/09Grog Shop - Cleveland

Really loved the show. Both opening bands were great. The venue was clean and the employees were very friendly. It was disappointing that Adam Young does not come out to sign autographs. The crowd was very well behaved and I believe it would have benefited him greatly to greet his fans after all they have brought him to the place he is now. (I'm just sayin'). While Adam undoubtedly has amazing talent I would love to see him interact with the crowd a little more. He seemed a little distant and his fans noticed it. All in all I am really impressed with Adam and his gifts and talents and I pray that God continues to bless him in all his endeavors.

    Owl City was pretty good

by Skash on 9/22/09Grog Shop - Cleveland

The band itself was amazing, I loved hearing all my favorite songs live, but the place where they played was awful. I really recommend going to see them, but make sure you know where you're going. Other than that, Owl City is amazing!!

    Owl City Really Rocks!

by momofteengirls on 9/22/09Grog Shop - Cleveland

So, who knew that Owl City would launch so many teens into actually believing that simple lyrics...no...clean and simple lyrics would be so catchy! Accompanied by the fact that they are incredible musicians, OWL CITY really rocked the house at The Grog Shop on Monday, September 21. It was a great night and one that helped a mom of teens re-capture some of the excitement of youth and music! The kids attending were all excellent audience members and just had fun dancing and singing and clapping and giving off a lot of positive energy. It was a fabulous night!

    Absolutely phenomenal concert

    by hockeyfan7602001 on 9/22/09Grog Shop - Cleveland

Unicorn Kid opened with an incredibly upbeat, complex-layered nintendocore set list that had the entire venue jumping. The uber-attractive Kate Havnevik brought down the intensity with her angelic voice. She was the best accoustic act I've ever heard. Owl City's performance was phenomenal. Adam Young is always having a good time while on stage. He also opted to not process his voice for this tour. It is also interesting to note that he only travels with attractive female synth players (Mindy white from Lydia, and now Breanne Duren). The night ended with the crowds plea for an encore and they came up and finished the show with "fireflies".

Owl City was amazing !!!!!! you should see them

by DmoneyandBman on 9/18/09Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

So we've never been to Bowery Ballroom and we heard that the acoustics were amazing but wow. We were blown away with the level and quality Owl City achieved live, so much better than the cd honestly. Even though Adam was really sick (he was swigging honey on stage) his energy and voice were amazing. We weren't sure if there was going to be a band with him and they were also really amazing. If you get the chance you should really go see them.
