About

Owl City is the musical brainchild of Adam Young, who launched the project in 2007 while living at his parents' home in Owatonna, Minnesota. Troubled by insomnia, Young began spending his evenings in the household basement, where a computer and several instruments provided a diversion from his sleeping patterns. He eventually combined those diversions into a blend of electronica and emo-pop, using little more than his computer and various keyboards to record the material. Songs were uploaded to MySpace upon completion, and Young began attracting a surprising amount of attention on the networking site. Of particular note was "Hello Seattle," a fabricated ode to the Emerald City whose viral popularity earned Young a record contract with Universal Republic.

Ocean Eyes, his first album for the label, was released in 2009, coinciding with the launch of Owl City's first national tour. While on the road, Young watched as "Fireflies" became one of the year's most popular singles, eventually topping the charts in several countries (including the U.S.) and selling more than three million copies. A deluxe edition of the album appeared in 2010, featuring seven bonus tracks as well as the original track list, and Universal Records capitalized on the buzz by also reissuing Maybe I'm Dreaming and Of June, both of which had been self-released several years earlier. An Airplane Carried Me to Bed, an album of acoustic pop songs that predated the Owl City project, followed in 2010. Technically a side project, the album was released under a different moniker, Sky Sailing. Young returned to Owl City in 2011 with All Things Bright and Beautiful, his first collection of new material in years. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi

Down on the Bowery with Owl City!

by MoFox on 9/16/09Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

This show was spectacular. The venue is the perfect setting for a concert. With three floors equipped with a bar and plenty of dance space it is impossible not to have a good time. Great restaurants aren't too far away in Little Italy and China Town so be sure to grab a bite to eat before the concert. Owl City played phenomenally well and because the space is just the right size you don't feel lost in the crowd. AWESOME SHOW!

    I'm obsessed with Owl City!

by neaj on 9/16/09Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

Adam Young/Owl City is genius!!!! I can't stop singing, smiling, and dancing. One of the most uplifting shows I've been to in a long time. I could listen to his music all day. This kid is going to be HUGE --- he's just starting out, and already has an incredible following. Keep on playing your music, Adam!

Owl City - really good show

by OWL444 on 9/16/09Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

Excellent show and always fun to see bands in small venues. Taylor Swift was in the house, so that was a bonus celebrity sighting.

Owl City + Unicorn + (Taylor Swift).

by MaryMarcia on 9/16/09Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

The concert started with a fabulous performance by a Scottish guy who goes by "unicorn kid." The music was amazing...and even though it was basically just him rocking out on stage, he was still entertaining. Owl City came on after some girl sang a few songs (I don't know her name, but not really worth mentioning). Adam was so great and interacted with the audience a bit at the end. He played all of the right songs (basically everything you would want to hear off of his Ocean Eyes album, and then a few other hits). The crowd was totally into it, and the intimate setting of the Bowery made it all the better. Plus Taylor Swift showed up and was dancing and singing the whole time (what a bonus!). Overall, the concert was awesome. I would definitely go again. The most underrated person of the night was definitely Adam's female lead, Breanne Duran. Her voice is beautiful and has the mystical likeness of Adam's. They are such a great pair! The only negative part of the concert were the overpriced booze (but what can you expect in NYC) and then the random second act which almost put me to sleep. GO TO OWL CITY. fantastic show!

too cold and unexpectadly long - but great show

by goranger22 on 9/16/09Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

The venue was very cold which became very apparent during the second opener as her music was too mellow for the style of music Owl City is. Owl City itself was fantastic and a great show.

Disappointing wait time v.s. performance time

by DisappointmentCity on 9/15/09El Mocambo - Toronto

The time just standing in the crowd and waiting for performers to come out is ridiculously long. The show is suppose to start at 6, but like most concerts, the time gets pushed back so it did not start until 7. By the time Owl City came out it was 8:45 and the show ended at ..9:30 :/ he only played 7-8 songs. But, he was actually sick on that day (with a minor sore throat) and it was his first time in Canada, so i guess he deserves a leeway. Overall he still sounded pretty awesome but his sick voice gets drowned by the crowd most of the time as he cant go very loud.
