Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour
Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.
With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."
What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?
Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.
During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.
Enjoyed the arena show. It was truly awesome to see this quality of a large show in Vegas on a smaller scale in our city. A lot of people were given an opportunity to see Cirque that might not ever had been possible. So glad that someone's vision became a reality for Lake Charles!!

This was my first Cirque Du Soleil and it was what I expected and more. I bought the tickets for a surprise for my husband. He had no idea what it was about and he was mesmerized during the entire show.
The show was really great. Way better than I expected.
One of the best shows I have seen in a long time. Music was great and the "bug" were awesome. Very talented performers, don't know how their bodies can do what they do. The show flowed well between scenes with just enough comic relief keep the show going.
I've seen Michael Jackson, Variki and the Cirque Movie and Ovo was just as unbelieveable!! My mother wanted to see on of the many Cirque Du Soleil and when Ovo came near by I made sure she got to attend!
My entire family enjoyed OVO. Some even preferred it over La Nouba. Excellent performance. Would see this again. The only thing that fell somewhat short was backdrop. This event used video images as backdrop. Would have preferred more dynamic backdrop changes like is done for La Nouba at Disneyworld. Sound was great, lighting was good. I was surprised at how many different acts were done on such a small stage at our venue.
Very good show. It was funny, entertaining, and incredibly well thought out. The show started right on time and lasted 55 minutes before a 20 minute intermission, then it continued for about another 55 minutes or so. The characters involved the crowd and it was very family friendly. Would definitely go to another show.
I cannot say enough good things about OVO. It was nothing short of amazing! It was the best Cirque Du Soleil performance I've seen in a long time and ALL of their shows are great. My eyes couldn't look quick enough to catch everything going on and that was fun. The performers were so very talented and entertaining. The show was funny as all get out; colorful; sweet; and the singer had the most beautiful voice you can imagine. I do hope Cirque Du Soleil will come back to our area with more of their productions. If you have an opportunity to see OVO...GO! It is well worth your time and money. Thank you Cirque Du Soleil for bringing OVO to Lake Charles, LA.

In some ways it was better than a larger performance. This felt so intimate. And beautiful as cirques always are.
One of my favorites so far. You are mesmerized with the costumes, tumbling and acrobatics. It is all simply amazing to watch. Would watch again!

One of the best events we have ever been to. It was completely stunning. The performers were world class. The front row tickets were well worth the price. Everything was perfect.
I have been to a few of the Cirque shows now and they never disappoint. Now vegas Cirque shows are by far the best, mainly because of the entire theater is set up for that one show. But given the fact that this performance was in a civic center, it still kept your attention and gave you a wow factor. That says a lot about Cirque. I had a great time at this show and it really gave me great time with my family. Fun for all ages!!
