Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour
Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.
With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."
What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?
Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.
During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.
this was a fantastic show. the preshow was funny and was very cute. Our fav;s were the grasshoppers...but all were fantastic.
This show was absolutely fabulous!! I would recommend seeing it.
An egg comes into view at the onset of the show. Following the theme of all their shows, a recurring element keeps you wondering. What will come out of the egg? The gymnastics, tramp specialist, acro-gymnastics, jugglers, tumblers, aerialist, actors, and singers, were what you would expect from Cirque du Soleil.
This show was incredible! It is great for all ages. I was entertained from start to finish and would defiantly see it again. I was so amazed at what these talented humans could do with their body's and strength.
Attending a Cirque du Soleil performance has always been on my list of things to experience. When the opportunity to attend OVO was presented I jumped at the chance. The performers were spellbinding, the costumes were phenomenal, and the story line is hilarious! I hated to see the performance come to a close. I would definitely love to see OVO again or purchase the DVD when it's released!
I enjoyed the show, but had trouble seeing some of the acts because the spotlight was in my eyes. This is the 2nd time I have had trouble with spotlights at the Cirque Du Soleil. I saw another show in Lafayette, LA and the spotlight in my eyes for about 15 minutes before the show started.
From someone who has had the pleasure of seeing several other Cirque Du Soleil shows, I loved this one also. And my companion saw his first and also love this one. Our only complaint was that our seats were in the 200 section and even though we had great seats to see the performance, in the future, we were going to spend the extra money to get in the lower section cause we were unable to appreciate the beautiful costumes and performers facial expressions, which were priceless through our binoculars. We will continue to attend all Cirque du Soleil shows that come to our area. Thank you!
The production was amazing: visually appealing, audibly appealing. This production had my senses reeling and kept me entertained and amazed from the beginning until the very end.
Incredible. I honestly forgot to clap because I was completely stunned. Amazing show with tremendous talent. Would absolutely recommend. Thank you Cirque performers!!!
I purchased the tickets for my family as a Christmas gift. GREAT GIFT idea!!! They will always remember this moment. Great memories with the family. All during the show, all I could say was "WOW", "That's Crazy". Wonderful production.
Cirque was amazing as usual. Set and costumes were beautiful.
Fantastic show for both adults and children. Absolutely keeps your attention with non-stop amazing action.
I've seen numberous circ shows. This was a very good show. The costumes were great. The performers were very talented as usual. You won't be disappointed!
Excellent show, especially the athletic portions. Great costuming and sound. Too much of the comic skits. The skill of the athletes and jugglers -balancers was impressive.
We love Cirque du Soleil. The shows are always entertaining and exciting. This one was no exception. LOVED it. My 10 year old enjoyed every minute as well.
I've seen a lot of Cirque du Soleil over the years, and this one just wasn't up to par. The beauty and spectacle was missing, and it just felt... off. It left me desiring more.
So colorful and entertaining. LIGHTS IN MY EYES. SOMETIMES TOO LOUD.
The artists were very good. The show was very impressive. We bought a show book that helped us to understand what was going on. I do recommend the show but you need to buy the show book.
Excellent show, Vegas quality for sure. Although the venue disappointed a little with only one restroom, one staircase/entrance/exit, and only one concession for 1,000 people. I've seen Cirque in Vegas, and was thrilled to be able to see it in my home town with my kids.
The talent in these shows is unbelievable! This is the 3rd Cirque Du Solieil we've seen, and the best yet!!!
