Outlaw Music Festival on Tour

The traveling musical circus that is the Outlaw Music Festival gives rootsy music fans of all stripes a special opportunity for some summer fun. Despite the shifting lineup of artists from year to year, Willie Nelson, naturally, is at the center of each show, and when you're watching him perform you're seeing an American treasure in action. But there's a lot more going on at the festival, as fans have found out over the years. The Outlaw stage has hosted the impassioned R&B/folk/blues amalgam of living legend Van Morrison, the blistering blues-rock sounds that turned the Tedeschi Trucks Band into a musical institution, the freewheeling, jam-happy journey of The Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh and many, many others. For fans of Americana-oriented music, it's tough to think of a better way to spend a summer day (and night), and this festival gives as many people as possible that opportunity by taking it in on the road.

Outlaw Music Festival Background

Spearheaded by no less iconic a figure than Willie Nelson, the Outlaw Music Festival started out in 2016 and turned into an annual shape-shifting celebration of roots-based music's many forms. Dipping into rock, country, folk, blues and bluegrass, the festival has included Alison Krauss, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Sturgill Simpson, Van Morrison, Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow, Phil Lesh and Friends, Robert Plant & The Sensational Shape Shifters, Bonnie Raitt, Counting Crows and plenty more. The Outlaw Village that's a part of each event date gives fans a chance to enjoy local foods and crafts and to commune with fellow music lovers while they're not busy being bowled over by what's happening onstage. Not every artist at The Outlaw Music Festival is American, but they're all profoundly influenced by the many strands of music that make up the Americana tapestry.

    Place needs work

by concertlover88 on 10/19/23Oak Mountain Amphitheatre - Birmingham

drove over from Atlanta, first time at Oak Mountain--all the other Live Nation amphitheaters I've been to have at least some portion covered, that would have been nice as it rained. Restrooms are very old, seats very old...just could use a facelift.

The Man Is A Once In A Lifetime Treasure!

by Bodie on 10/18/23Oak Mountain Amphitheatre - Birmingham

Having enjoyed seeing Willie for many years, I am amazed at the continued excellence of his performance! The warm up acts were fair to good, but Willie is well worth the experience. I just hope that if I make it to 90 y/o, I can still function at his level of awesomeness!

    Concert was really good

by TrashPanda on 10/18/23Oak Mountain Amphitheatre - Birmingham

The one thing that stood out to me about the beverage selection was that it was basically the same everywhere. I will say I did not visit every one of them but the ones I did visit, the selection could have been much better. Also, the prices were well above what I have paid in other venues and they expected tips for service so it made for an expensive evening. Birmingham has many local breweries and they could/should be represented in Birmingham entertainment. Not only would some healthy competition open up, the variety would vastly improve. There was only one IPA offered and some domestic beers. This local beverage diversity could improve greatly if the venue reached out to multiple vendors instead of just one.

    Very disappointed

by Senor on 10/18/23BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove - Southaven

Sound was awful throughout each act. The monitors did not provide any close up shots of the musicians and so were worthless. Crowd was ignorant and talked through the sets of musicians. Lines for concessions were overly long causing unnecessary delays. Parking was poorly marked and signed, leaving first time customers like us to wonder about correct walking route to event.

    Willie Nelson was so amazing

by Ae on 10/18/23BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove - Southaven

I really enjoyed the event! However the amount of alcohol that was consumed was crazy! There was an altercation with people behind us . There really needs to be a limit on the drinks! I pray everyone made it home safely!

    Lackluster

by 1true_patriot on 10/18/23BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove - Southaven

I was very disappointed in the concert as a whole. Bankplus Amphitheater made improvements to their facility but what they did to the lawn section is horrible. They took away the grassy area and the ability way to bring chairs to sit in. They left patrons with small artificial turf knolls, that once you sat down, you couldn't see the stage, because of the seats in front of you. The concert started at 4:50 and at 9:15, we left because Willie Nelson had yet to come on to the stage.

    Not too impressed

by BeBe on 10/18/23BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove - Southaven

First time at the venue , so wasn't sure on the parking situation . The walk to the show was absolutely ridiculous , they need a shuttle or a drop off spot for elderly and handicapped

    Epic show!

by KaylaDeann on 10/18/23BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove - Southaven

This was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. Willie was fantastic. Can’t believe he’s still touring at 90! It was our second time to see him and he didn’t disappoint. The Avett Brothers put on a fantastic show. So energetic. The venue was great.

    Outlaw Music Festival was ok

by DP on 10/17/23The Wharf Amphitheater - Orange Beach

We enjoyed Elisabeth Cook, really enjoyed Govt. Mule, and loved Willie Nelson! The Avett Brothers were just not that exciting to us. Almost every song sounded the same. Not into that style of “new country!”

by Abby on 10/17/23BankPlus Amphitheater at Snowden Grove - Southaven

The festival was great. Loved all the singers/bands before Willie, but it was truly awesome to see Willie himself up on that stage. Great performance.

    Great show

by Lisa on 10/17/23Brandon Amphitheater - Brandon

Willie started out a little rough but found his groove quickly. His band was excellent at flowing with him and harmonizing, and the song choice included so many classics as well as fun songs I hadn’t heard. There were four warm up acts. The first was a guy who also played & sang with Willie. He was good, as was the female vocalist whose band followed him. Third was a band I was less impressed with; they sounded like a garage jam, not bad but not great and not really serious. His final warmup band was the Avett Brothers. They were spectacular - just excellent on every song.

Outlaw Music Festival is definitely worth it.

by Guy Cliché on 10/16/23Brandon Amphitheater - Brandon

Only saw the last two acts but they were great. If you haven’t seen the Avett Brothers, you should and who doesn’t love Willie. He may have lost a step but you can’t even compare him to most guys his age because there aren’t any.

    So memorable!

by Concert lover on 10/16/23Brandon Amphitheater - Brandon

Anytime one has the opportunity to see Willie perform live….. it’s a completely indescribable and completely moving experience. As a native Texan….. Willie is King in Texas. My friend and I traveled from Texas to Mississippi to see him perform at 90 years old. We will never forget it and can only hope we have the chance to see him again.
