Orlando Magic History

Joining the NBA in the 1989 expansion era, the Magic struggled for three years until picking center Shaquille O'Neal first in the 1992 draft. The Magic finished at .500 in the 1992–93 season, barely missing the playoffs. Then, with only a slim chance in the 1993 draft lottery, the team won the rights to pick No. 1 again. They used their selection, Chris Webber, in a trade to obtain guard Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and future picks.

O’Neal and Hardaway led the Magic to 50 wins in the 1993–94 season and then 57 victories, as well as a trip to the NBA Finals, the following year. In the 1995–96 campaign, the Magic won a franchise-record 60 games in what would be O'Neal's last season in Orlando. They made it to the Eastern Conference finals against the Chicago Bulls.

Over the next 10 years, the Magic made the playoffs five times under the leadership of coach Doc Rivers and Hall of Fame guard Tracy McGrady, who earned two scoring titles and the 2001 Most Improved Player award during his tenure. The 2006–07 season saw Orlando start a run of six consecutive postseason appearances, as star center Dwight Howard blossomed and the Magic surrounded him with young talent and savvy veterans.

The Magic reached the second round of the playoffs in 2008 behind Howard and forwards Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu and Rashard Lewis. The following season, with trade acquisition Rafer Alston filling in for injured point guard Jameer Nelson and sharpshooter J.J. Redick taking on a more prominent role, the team won 59 games and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics and the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. It earned the Magic a second trip to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Following Howard’s trade to the Lakers in 2012, the Magic began a decade-long rebuilding process while developing notable talents like Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vučević. The Magic’s luck seemed to improve after reaching playoff contention once again in 2019 and 2020, and landing top draft picks such as Mo Bamba, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero.

  • Excellent event

by Jess on 1/24/22Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first NBA game & I was very pleased with the experience. I enjoyed as well as feared the half time show. Our seating was perfect. Food was overpriced & mediocre but it was to be expected. I will definitely attend other NBA games in the future.

  • Overall good.

  • Lakers vs magic

by Kc on 1/24/22Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Everything about the game was great.only two things I would change.1 is every one should get a chance to be on the big screen. People in the high paid seat never gets to participate. Then parking in the geico garage there needs to be more attendants giving directions after the game.that gridlock was horrible

  • Game great. Area staff not so much.

by Ang on 1/24/22Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

So first, there’s a bag ban Nothing more than 4x6. Guy stopped me on the way in and said my wristlet was too big. Said the zipper made it exceed the size not the leather. I was visiting the Orlando area & arrived on train to game. Had no where to put it so I had to throw it out. Then I get into the building and seriously the amount of people walking around with FULL sized purses was crazy. What the heck? Then got to seats. They were fine. Floor was already sticky. The thing that pushed it over the top for me was the gentleman ‘guiding’ people to their seats took his mask off continuously for substantial amounts of time every time he needed to verbally say anything to anyone. What’s the point of an ‘indoor’ mandatory mask mandate when the folks getting paid to be at an event don’t even adhere to that? Again, game was great. The crowd hypers were energetic and never let a dull moment pass in between quarters and even time outs. I would absolutely never go back to that venue though.

  • Great Accessible accommodations

    by Robert B on 1/20/22Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Went to a Magic Game in my Hoveround. I had accessible seating which were incredible! The accommodations provided allowed me to get in with no difficulty. The seats were isolated in their own area with special disability bathrooms only for that area. The Attendants were fantastic and Helpful. I would recommend to anyone with special needs.

Was in town for a soccer tournament and decided to take in a Magic game. Had an absolutely wonderful time. Amazing seats behind the basket, great atmosphere in the arena, easy entrance and exit. Was a great experience and would highly recommend.

  • Amway

    by DA$H on 1/8/22Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

It’s a very nice venue. Plenty of vendors, nice staff, lots of historical Orlando Magic memories. My first time visiting and we thought it was dope. I utilized the Magic 360 camera and was featured on the jumboTron screen. I just moved to Orlando and I definitely will be back.

  • Great service and friendly staff

My only disappointment was treatment of the national anthem, but I didn’t expect much

  • Amway Center great venue

by COgal on 1/2/22Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

We had a wonderful time taking our grandsons to a Orlando Magic BB Game. Getting to our reserved parking in the garage was tricky as most of the streets were closed but once in there many spaces available. The online site said you could enter 2 hrs before the event. Actually we stood in line for an hr as they changed it to 1 hr ahead without an update on the website. The personnel in the stores were awesome & selection great making for happy boys. Our seats in row 8 were comfortable and could not have had a better site line to the court. Concessions for food: we immediately went to order food for the boys but found NO even semi healthy options. Even burgers were “sold out”, which was odd as we were just allowed to enter the facility. Except for a few minor hiccups, it was an amazing evening full of memories.

    by Double A on 12/31/21Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was excellent. We were visiting family in the area and went to the Magic vs Bucks game. Parking in the Geico garage was convenient as well as easy in and out.

  • Awesome Arena

I bought tickets as a surprise gift for my son. He loved it! We had a great time!

  • Not quite the experience I was hoping for

by Katrina on 12/20/21Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

I paid a little extra for club tickets thinking it would make for a better experience. However, I felt our whole experience was rushed and we could not sit back and enjoy it. We got there early to take advantage of the whole event but they didn’t even start letting people in until 6 PM, for a game that started at 7 PM. Despite being in the very front, it took a while to get inside. Despite being one of the first in line for food we ended up waiting so long we had to inhale it and run back to our seats. The line only got worse after us. Despite being on the 4th floor, it took just as long to get our drinks in the private bar then it did on the 3rd. Not to say I’ll never come back, but I don’t think the experience of a $200 ticket is any better than a $50 ticket.

  • Poor value

by gpete on 12/20/21Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

the fieldhouse and facilities were good.. but the game stunk.. both teams played a bunch of D-League players- I knew virtually no one... I will never pay $700 to watch the Orlando Magic again
