Orlando Magic History

Joining the NBA in the 1989 expansion era, the Magic struggled for three years until picking center Shaquille O'Neal first in the 1992 draft. The Magic finished at .500 in the 1992–93 season, barely missing the playoffs. Then, with only a slim chance in the 1993 draft lottery, the team won the rights to pick No. 1 again. They used their selection, Chris Webber, in a trade to obtain guard Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and future picks.

O’Neal and Hardaway led the Magic to 50 wins in the 1993–94 season and then 57 victories, as well as a trip to the NBA Finals, the following year. In the 1995–96 campaign, the Magic won a franchise-record 60 games in what would be O'Neal's last season in Orlando. They made it to the Eastern Conference finals against the Chicago Bulls.

Over the next 10 years, the Magic made the playoffs five times under the leadership of coach Doc Rivers and Hall of Fame guard Tracy McGrady, who earned two scoring titles and the 2001 Most Improved Player award during his tenure. The 2006–07 season saw Orlando start a run of six consecutive postseason appearances, as star center Dwight Howard blossomed and the Magic surrounded him with young talent and savvy veterans.

The Magic reached the second round of the playoffs in 2008 behind Howard and forwards Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu and Rashard Lewis. The following season, with trade acquisition Rafer Alston filling in for injured point guard Jameer Nelson and sharpshooter J.J. Redick taking on a more prominent role, the team won 59 games and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics and the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. It earned the Magic a second trip to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Following Howard’s trade to the Lakers in 2012, the Magic began a decade-long rebuilding process while developing notable talents like Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vučević. The Magic’s luck seemed to improve after reaching playoff contention once again in 2019 and 2020, and landing top draft picks such as Mo Bamba, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero.

  • Best game ever

by Pamela on 2/26/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

The seats we purchase were amazing at a reasonable price. We are fans of the nicks but this was an amazing experience. The game was just a perfect match. It kept everyone on their toes! We were visiting from Massachusetts! Loved the mascot he or she was so funny and so into the job. The dancer's were great. The crowd was so into it too. Only negative, I didn't like them making me put my purse in a locker all I had was a wallet n keys. Unreasonable and extra time and money. Just look through them like every other venue and park! Food was pricey but it is everywhere!

My family and I had a great time at the game. It was my kids first NBA game and they had a blast. Really enjoyed the variety of food options available at the area.

  • Uninformed Gate Attendees

by AG on 2/12/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 1 out of 5

Paid for lounge access tickets with entry at 5:30, but we were denied access. We waited for a manger to come over who finally let us enter. My client who also attended with me for purposes of marketing was told the wrong entrance and told to wait in line with the general group. It was a bad experience for the purpose of attending the game to market to a potential client.

  • Super Cool

The halftime shows are really fun and the game was exciting with a new twist at the end.

  • What’s the point?

by Rich on 2/10/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 1 out of 5

What’s the point of purchasing parking at the GEICO parking lot if they’re going to oversell? I prepaid and when I arrived I was told the lot was full. I showed my e-ticket and was told “good luck finding a spot.” I had to stop an employee who led me to a non-parking spot and told me to leave the car there. The kicker, I needed a handicap parking space.

  • Great competitors, future champs

by Johnny blue on 2/10/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to several games and they battle to the end. They have many young players, but give them a year or 2 and they will be one of the top teams in the league.

  • Great game!!

    by Blaze1Bx on 2/10/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

We had such a great time! The game was tight from beginning to end. The crowd was electric, the arena was clean and provided nice entertainment. Of course like any other arena, the concession stands were brutally overpriced though. Overall, the evening went fantastic. We will be back soon!!

  • I had a pleasant experience

by Gforce on 2/1/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Tickets purchase process was easy. I recommend in the future, all purchased tickets that are issued electronically be viewable at the entrance to the stadium. Connectivity was poor (for me), and i was the cause of delay for other attendees.

  • Outstanding

  • Scam parking

by Essie on 1/31/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first experience at an NBA game and i must say it was phenomenal. The energy was great, the game was so real, and the activities doing the time outs was amazing. What a great experience.

  • Parking issues!!

by Fred Flintstone on 1/31/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

I had a very, very tough time finding the Geico garage, which, I pre-paid for. Once, I found where it was at, after what seemed like hours searching for. I parked, and after I parked I couldn't find where the amway center was at, finally, I found out it was on the fifth floor of the garage. Anybody heard of signs telling us where to go??!! After the game was over, once again I counldn't find where the Geico garage was, finally, an attendant told me it was the sign where it saids bridge. Again, hello, McFly anybody home??? Signs, please!!!!

  • Magic game

by Mario on 1/28/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Good show, good place and amazing atmosphere. The food is poor, and the entrance is medium

  • Nice game and great interval performance!

by Andre on 1/28/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Very good basketball game, both teams did a great job a it as a close match ate the end of the game, great! Interval performance was nice, it was “Brazil night” and they brought one of the best Brazilian singers (Clauida Leite), which was fun!!! There could be more drinks and food sold to people at their seats. We had to miss part of the game to get something in the back (plenty of options there!). Signaling of Uber area at exit would be nice as well, there was no such thing.

  • Great Game!

A fantastic experience watching the Orlando Magic VS Indiana Pacers. All arena staff were professional and the facilities were clean.
