Orlando Magic History

Joining the NBA in the 1989 expansion era, the Magic struggled for three years until picking center Shaquille O'Neal first in the 1992 draft. The Magic finished at .500 in the 1992–93 season, barely missing the playoffs. Then, with only a slim chance in the 1993 draft lottery, the team won the rights to pick No. 1 again. They used their selection, Chris Webber, in a trade to obtain guard Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and future picks.

O’Neal and Hardaway led the Magic to 50 wins in the 1993–94 season and then 57 victories, as well as a trip to the NBA Finals, the following year. In the 1995–96 campaign, the Magic won a franchise-record 60 games in what would be O'Neal's last season in Orlando. They made it to the Eastern Conference finals against the Chicago Bulls.

Over the next 10 years, the Magic made the playoffs five times under the leadership of coach Doc Rivers and Hall of Fame guard Tracy McGrady, who earned two scoring titles and the 2001 Most Improved Player award during his tenure. The 2006–07 season saw Orlando start a run of six consecutive postseason appearances, as star center Dwight Howard blossomed and the Magic surrounded him with young talent and savvy veterans.

The Magic reached the second round of the playoffs in 2008 behind Howard and forwards Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu and Rashard Lewis. The following season, with trade acquisition Rafer Alston filling in for injured point guard Jameer Nelson and sharpshooter J.J. Redick taking on a more prominent role, the team won 59 games and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics and the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. It earned the Magic a second trip to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Following Howard’s trade to the Lakers in 2012, the Magic began a decade-long rebuilding process while developing notable talents like Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vučević. The Magic’s luck seemed to improve after reaching playoff contention once again in 2019 and 2020, and landing top draft picks such as Mo Bamba, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero.

Loved opening night! Great atmosphere, fun events outside before the game! Food was tasty too. Thank you for the t-shirts but was kinda weird that the attendants started taking them from the seats before the game was over!

Nothing short of spectacular! This was my sons 11th birthday surprise gift. We drove down from Tallahassee to come to the season opener. The staff was polite and helpful. Only disappointment was the vendors not accepting cash.

Visiting from the UK with 2 teenage boys so we decided to book our very first basketball ball game and it was fantastic. It was a great experience, the stadium was easily accessible, everyone was as helpful and the build up and breaks during the game weee entertaining. Would definitely recommend.

  • Fun team, terrible venue

by CG on 10/23/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

The game was fun and the Magic organization's efforts to engage the audience were very successful. However, Amway Center is extraordinarily difficult to navigate if you are short. The incline if the stairs leading to the seats is VERY steep and the steps themselves are over a foot high each. We had 4th row seats in the lower bowl and I hurt my knee and back making my way to the exit.

  • Unmissable! An experience you need to have

I had an excellent experience watching the Flamengo x Orlando Magics basketball game. I was very pleased to be able to participate in the event. I can't wait to do it again.

  • Great experience with one exception

by Judy on 10/21/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

The venue and game were great. I think there should have been a warning about what you could bring into the building. I had a tiny cross body purse and had to go to the far end of the building to store it in a locker which cost us time and $12. If I had known I would have planned accordingly.

  • Awesome place

by NewportNightmare on 8/1/23Rating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I moved to Orlando in 2021 from Iowa. We are Bulls fans, but we also have become Orlando Magic fans. It’s awesome living in a city with a professional team. I like the Amway center better than the United Center. The walkways seem wider and love how the parking is so close. We go to 4 or 5 games a year. We would go to more but I have a horrible back, and it’s hard for me to get around. I highly recommend attending the Magic games.

Great experience for a couple of Brits on holiday.

  • Bag rule is ridiculous

by Kat on 4/7/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

Amway has rules for bag size/purse, which is smaller than a cell phone size in some cases. I had a crossbody, small bag with my phone, a pair of glasses, and lipstick and they would not let it in. They want you to pay for a locker outside for 13+ dollars. Anyway, you walk through detector, im great with that, check my tiny bag, i don't care. Put us off. Otherwise, clean, nice arena with very nice bar staff and ushers. Thanks to them! BTW, i hung my bag on a fence outside after emptying it and it was still there after the game.
