Orlando Magic History

Joining the NBA in the 1989 expansion era, the Magic struggled for three years until picking center Shaquille O'Neal first in the 1992 draft. The Magic finished at .500 in the 1992–93 season, barely missing the playoffs. Then, with only a slim chance in the 1993 draft lottery, the team won the rights to pick No. 1 again. They used their selection, Chris Webber, in a trade to obtain guard Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and future picks.

O’Neal and Hardaway led the Magic to 50 wins in the 1993–94 season and then 57 victories, as well as a trip to the NBA Finals, the following year. In the 1995–96 campaign, the Magic won a franchise-record 60 games in what would be O'Neal's last season in Orlando. They made it to the Eastern Conference finals against the Chicago Bulls.

Over the next 10 years, the Magic made the playoffs five times under the leadership of coach Doc Rivers and Hall of Fame guard Tracy McGrady, who earned two scoring titles and the 2001 Most Improved Player award during his tenure. The 2006–07 season saw Orlando start a run of six consecutive postseason appearances, as star center Dwight Howard blossomed and the Magic surrounded him with young talent and savvy veterans.

The Magic reached the second round of the playoffs in 2008 behind Howard and forwards Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu and Rashard Lewis. The following season, with trade acquisition Rafer Alston filling in for injured point guard Jameer Nelson and sharpshooter J.J. Redick taking on a more prominent role, the team won 59 games and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics and the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. It earned the Magic a second trip to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Following Howard’s trade to the Lakers in 2012, the Magic began a decade-long rebuilding process while developing notable talents like Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vučević. The Magic’s luck seemed to improve after reaching playoff contention once again in 2019 and 2020, and landing top draft picks such as Mo Bamba, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero.

  • Wonderful experience

by Yura on 12/4/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

It was my first time to watch the NBA basket ball game because I live in Japan. And I’m so proud of both team, Orlando magic and Los Angeles Lakers. These teams were incredible to watch. I was just obsessed with the game even if I was away from the basketball court.

Great atmosphere and place to see a game. Would definitely recommend.

  • Least Enjoyable Game Ever

by Bill on 11/27/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 1 out of 5

The game itself wasn't bad, but the constant noise through the arena sound system made it an almost unbearably unpleasant experience. The sound was deafening. The only brief moments of quiet were when the Magic were shooting free throws. Why is it necessary; if the team is good, as the Magic are this year, people will go to the game to watch basketball. Anyone that wants to listen to music already has earbuds on; there really should be some consideration for the actual basketball fans. I will never attend another event in that stadium.

  • Nothing Magical about Amway Arena

by GB on 11/27/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

Traffic around the parking garage was horrible and caused major congestion around the area. The line getting into the arena from the garage was at a standstill as people were not prepared to go through security Received inconsistent information from ushers regarding seating chart. Overall not a good experience.

  • Great event, beautiful facility

by VM on 11/24/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Never having been to the Amway Center, it was very stressful maneuvering to get to the Center, especially at night. We left early to avoid the traffic situation. Having said all that, I must say that the Magic game vs Toronto Raptors was fun watching in a state of art facility with our grown children and our teen grandchildren. It was a real treat for them as well as ourselves, but In the future my husband and I will be buying tickets for them and letting them attend without us.

  • All in a good experience

by Magic v Raptors on 11/24/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Everything was great, except not being able to purchase from concessions stall (bar). Had used CC for dining, at shop and afterwards, but was refused multiple times at concessions (right after shop purchase). Server was very unhelpful. Being card only is ridiculous.

  • attempting to ticket my 2 year old

by DHaze on 11/21/23Rating: 2 out of 5

We love Amway arena and the atmosphere, but tonight security tried to ticket my 2 year old. As my husband told them she was 2, me brought out a measuring stick and said she needed a ticket. Since when does a measuring stick determine a child's age? She's in the 95th percentile in height - that baby wasn't watching basketball, she was watching her tablet. Craziness 😵‍💫

  • Amazing Experience But Very Cold

    by Nico90 on 11/7/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Went to the Amway Centre to see Orlando Magic play LA Lakers. The game was amazing. The atmosphere was brilliant. Plenty options for food and drinks before and during the game. Only downside is the Amway Centre is freezing cold due to their air conditioning. If it wasn’t so cold, I would have rated this 5 stars.

  • Great team, terrible seats!

    by John S on 10/31/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 1 out of 5

The upper bowl of the Amway Center is sooo far away from the court that the seats should have a different area code than the lower bowl. No seat in the upper bowl should cost more than $20. Anything priced higher than that is a crime. The Orlando Magic themselves (the team) were great, same for the the arena's audio & visual department. My main complaint is just how freaking far the upper bowl seats feel. Its like you're not even at the game. At least I know for next time.

  • Amazing!!

by Russ on 10/30/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Such an amazing experience. The atmosphere was brilliant. Loads of in game entertainment and well organised traffic easing to get out quickly

  • Orlando Magic 🏀

by Alyson on 10/29/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

What a great evening at the Amway centre watching Orlando Magic🏀 It was easy to find the car park and straight through security checks. Seats were brilliant and what a bonus having free t shirts. Such a great atmosphere and a brilliant evening out with family even if you’re not a big fan. Drinks were easy and quick to purchase (no cash tho). All the entertainment at time out and half time was great fun and full on, they all work so hard. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting an evening out when visiting Orlando and would do again. Tickets were easy to download to wallet and you had plenty of reminders from ticketmaster about the game and thankyou for a great experience🙂

  • First visit

Enjoyable first visit to the Anway Center. Staff very helpful and very clean arena.

  • Orlando Magic Start of Season

by Heiko on 10/29/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience and fantastic show. The Magic won against Houston. The places were as expected from the Ticketmaster webpage. Chose public transport to the Amway arena as it is just a 10 min walk from the Lynx central station downtown. The access to the area via the fan shop was easy. Just a small queue. However, the shop was crowded. Inside the arena the choice of food and beverages is okay - from fast food to quite good sandwiches. Overall great experience as already stated above.

  • Brilliant night

by Steve on 10/28/23Amway Center - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Parking in Geico garage straight forward and relatively quick stadium entry. Loved stadium and food n drink options and of course the merchandise. Plenty to entertain as well as the basketball itself and nice touch with free T shirts. Game was exciting and great fun - recommend it to anyone! Let’s go Magic 😂🏀
