OPETH IN CONCERT:

Swedish progressive metal rockers Opeth are all about keeping listeners on their toes. The band's technically virtuosic jams are a study in contrast, juxtaposing brutal guitar riffing with soft acoustic passages and blood-curdling death growls with melodic choruses. Their live shows play up these opposing elements perfectly, hitting fans with a maelstrom of moods and textures that run the gamut from heart-pounding to serene. At the center of it all is frontman Mikael Akerfeldt, a magnetic performer whose dynamic voice and wild-eyed intensity is the driving force behind ambitious compositions like "Sorceress" and "Will O The Wisp." He's joined on stage by a motley crew of shredders who keep the energy cranked to the max on guitar, bass, drums, and Mellotron – a unique keyboard instrument that lends an eerie, otherworldly vibe to the band's songs. Metal fans looking to have their minds blown continue to turn out in droves to see Opeth play, and they're never disappointed by the band's hard-hitting, adventurous sounds.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Opeth formed in Stockholm in 1990 and spent their early years playing a straight-ahead brand of death metal featuring blast beats and aggressive vocals. By mid-decade the band had begun incorporating elements of jazz, blues, and even classical, and their 1995 debut album Orchid was roundly hailed by critics for its unique blend of styles. The band released three more albums in the '90s but didn't start touring until the release of 2001's Blackwater Park. That album sold nearly 100,000 copies in the US alone, a major feat that drew the band out on their first world tour. By the end of the '00s Opeth was a fixture on the Swedish charts, and American audiences weren't far behind – both 2011's Heritage and 2014's Pale Communion cracked the Top 20 on the US Billboard 200. The band released their 12th studio album Sorceress to another round of critical acclaim in 2016, and followed up with more face-melting sets on their Sorceress World Tour.

Of Course It Was Amazing....It's Opeth

by noctem on 7/13/09Glass House - Pomona

Opeth are one of those bands that will leave you with your jaw dragging on the floor, whether you're experiencing them live or listening to their albums. I don't think I've ever seen a more professional or flawless group of musicians, and I've seen a lot of bands in my time. Even if you've never heard their music before watching them live, I guarantee you'll leave the show a fan. Bravo to you gentlemen, and thank you for a great evening.

    Opeth never fails to amaze

by Beskudz on 7/13/09Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

Opeth is a band who is amazing, simply put. The musical genious that is Opeth is evident through the thoughtfully composed pieces that take the listener on a serious ride. Their progressive influence brings you up, down, into beautifully soothing melody, and within seconds to brutally intense blast beating and gutteral growls that will make your blood curdle. It is just too cool! This show in NYC was my fourth time seeing Opeth (the second time that month, I went to the Boston show on May 2nd as well). The material never gets old. Just seeing these amazing musicians at work is enough to hold anyones attention for hours. Mikael Akerfeldt, the vocalist and guitarist who is the main driving force of the band never ceases to entertain with his witty banters between songs, and always having something interesting to talk about. The band is simply amazing live, and I recommend that anyone who likes progressive music should go see Opeth in a city near you!

Opeth: Grand Ballroom at Manhattan Center 26 May

by RHGirl57 on 7/13/09Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

So this was a solo trek because there was no way I could drag rtb or violaleeblue to a heavy metal concert. Black metal. Death metal. As I was watching the bands I imagined the two of them there with the same look on their faces that Woody Allen had when Dianne Wiest took him to CBGBs in Hannah and Her Sisters. The Grand Ballroom is upstairs from the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center. It’s a great space. No where near as cavernous as the Hammerstein, carpeted, balcony, and great sound. When I say great sound I mean it. This was another instance where the bands were loud without being LOUD. Unfortunately there’s the long line to get in, the bag check, the patted down body search, and the taking away of your expensive umbrella, which you’ll never see again because by the time you get to the umbrella table at the end of the night all that are left are the cheap sidewalk vendor umbrellas. The first band was Enslaved, who are a black/Viking/progressive metal band from Norway. Their lyrics are in English, Norwegian, and Icelandic. Most of their songs deal with Norse mythology. I know this because I read their Wikipedia page. All the songs are sung in the guttural black metal voice but even when they switch to a normal singing voice (for the progressive metal sections) I can’t understand any of the lyrics. Musically they’re better than most metal bands I’ve heard but there was still something Spinal Tapish about them. But I think that’s true of most metal. It’s the long hair and the whiplash-inducing head-banging and the clothing that make so many of these bands appear cartoonish before they’ve even played a note. But it’s what their audiences want and what their audiences dress up as also. Except for those in Enslaved and Opeth t-shirts of which there were way too many. What is it with kids today? Like Opeth, Enslaved’s progressive metal is a nice counter to the metal. As many of you know I am not a fan of progressive rock but theirs is definitely more metal than rock. I didn’t think the drumming was very strong but in metal it is the guitar that rules and that sounded great. Band members are Grutle Kjellson (bass, lead vocals), Ivar Bjørnson (guitar, effects), Arve Isdal (guitar), Cato Bekkevold (drums), and Herbrand Larsen (keys and vocals). The keys weren’t very strong either and I think that leads to the sound being more progressive metal instead of progressive rock. Opeth took the stage as the audience was chanting their name. This was as boisterous as the crowd got. They were the politest rock audience I’ve ever seen. More polite than a Lucero crowd. More polite than a Flogging Molly crowd. The band was trying to egg them on a bit but even when lead singer and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt asked them to act up a bit, he asked in the most polite way possible. Both bands were extremely polite and they were the boys you’d want to take home to mother. Åkerfeldt also joked with the crowd and teased and played with them quite a bit. Before one song he announced, “We are Opeth. The best band in the world,” with a totally straight face but he almost immediately started cracking up. Fredrik Åkesson (guitar), Martin Mendez (bass), Per Wiberg (keys), and Martin "Axe" Axenrot (drums) make up the rest of this Swedish progressive death metal/progressive rock band. Opeth had a much stronger drum sound and again the progressive rock vocals and music worked as a nice balance with the death metal vocals and music. The keyboards were much stronger here, which is where the progressive rock comes in. The lyrics were in English but I still had difficulty with a lot of them. I did like “Hessian Peel” a lot, which had a really nice guitar. I can’t let this review end without mention of what’s happened this week. The way that I grieve is to make the person very present in my life. I talk with them. They accompany me to work and hang out with me at home. Just as I wouldn’t take rtb or violaleeblue to this show, I wouldn’t take terri-lynn or Jack with me either. But even though I didn’t bring them, there they were. Terri-lynn and Jack were at my side, commenting on the music, teasing me for liking it, and helping me enjoy the wonderful mindlessness of having sound bombard and assault me physically.

    Opeth NYC 5/26/09

by tgrex123 on 7/13/09Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

I'm happy to say that I've been to several Opeth concert's now, but sadly this one was the worst. The set list was not as great as I was expecting; they went through the set list like they were tired of touring... not to blame them their tour schedule looks intense. But none-the-less they are my favorite band so I'll take a tired Opeth gig any day!!! I also caught Axe's drum stick at the end on the concert... sweet!

Greatest Rock Band In the World

by BJDrew on 7/13/09Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

The lights go on, and the first words of the concert. "We are Opeth. [Pause] We are the greatest band in the world. This was followed by a solid 2+ hours of hard hitting rock. I'm not typically a metal/prog rock guy, but damn, these guys are good. It's high-energy, fun, a good mixed crowd, just an overall good time. Opeth is worth seeing for anyone who's into either the black metal, prog rock, or even hard traditional rock genre. *PS - he's just a funny guy and you'll piss yourself laughing with the things he says. Everyone knows Whitesnake is the greatest band in the world.

    Excellent show

by MayorMcAwesome on 7/13/09Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

Exceeded my expectation. Only downside was that the mosh pit, as always, eventually descended to the point where only cow-like hulkmen were stalking around and staring malevolently at people. Take a break, man, nobody wants to most with a four hundred pound side of beef. Otherwise, multiple thumbs up.

    Another Amazing Night with Opeth

by LDrain on 7/13/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

I was able to see Opeth again at the Regency within 6 months and was far from disappointed or bored. These guys are expert musicians, talented songwriters, and just a solid band. The sound they produce engulfs you in pure bliss. I will not miss an available Opeth show anytime in the near future.

    Hot as Hell!

by DaytonNeckWrecker on 7/13/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Enslaved opened the show and they were good. They played the opening track from Vertebrae and plenty of older stuff. They also had great rapport with the crowd. Opeth was extremely tight - one of the best sounding live shows I've ever heard. It's clear that invest in equipment and personnel to produce that effect. They played great material. The bummer of the show was the heat. I'm just sick and tired of going to indoor shows in the summer where it appears that not one iota of thought has been to the comfort of the guests.

by Metalheart on 7/12/09Glass House - Pomona

I had a great time of course. When down about 3:30 in the afternoon. I live in corona, so it was on;y about 15 to 20 min from where i live. Got myself a room at the motel 6 nearby, and then took a cab to the show. I know i was going to have some drinks, so i was being good! Anyway the show was great. The only complaint was, that it was to freaken hot in there! You would just be standing there and start to sweat. But it was worth it!!

    opeth never disappoints

    by boozie on 7/12/09Clutch Cargo's - Pontiac

i've seen opeth at least a half dozen times and each show has been amazing. well, this one was no exception, and arguably sported one of their longest and most diverse setlists i've ever heard them play live. They played a couple songs off the new album "Watershed" as well as a healthy dose of old school Opeth "MR, MAYH" and of course a spattering of hits from the in between albums. My only disappointment was the absence of an "Orchid" track. But the set was easily around two hours, so I definitely got my fill of Opethness. All in all, a great show for hardcore Opeth fans and ones who are just discovering them. Mikael Akerfeldt was humorous and entertaining than ever between songs. If you have any interest in metal, this is a band you must see live.

    Opeth ROCKS!

by metalchick on 7/12/09The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

As always Opeth didn't disappoint. Hypnotic, mesmerizing ... A great time!! True musicians in every sense of the word, their cohesiveness and attention to detail add a specific style and flavor to their music that sets Opeth apart from the rest. Mikael's vocals are sweet and commanding in their own unique way .. always a great show to see!

    Steaming in the Glass House

by SatansLittleHelper on 7/12/09Glass House - Pomona

Great bands in a not so great venue. First time seeing Enslaved and second time seeing Opeth. Overall, I would highly recommend both bands on this bill. The Glass House could use better ventilation. Another down side was the lack of alcohol, which was probably related to the All Ages aspects of the show, but I've been to other All Ages venues where booze was available, so not sure why Glass House did not offer up cocktails for those over 21.

    Opeth in the burining glasshouse

by YeaitsMe on 7/12/09Glass House - Pomona

Well Opeth was amazing and enslaved wasnt necessarily for my taste but they were good dont get me wrong. The only real problem i had was that the glasshouse was poorly ventilated thus making it a very sweaty show. Other than that it was a great show with Opeth's song Karma being played for the first time live ever. All in all i got to see one of my favorite bands on my birthday. Was a sick show with a bass solo and guitar solo during the encore and a finisher of demon of the fall. Excellent playing few to no mistakes but what can ya expect from opeth

    Music to go into battle

by MadBadandDangeroustoKnow on 7/12/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

full house of hard rockers! European metal bands, sounds loud and angry, to me, (I was in the US Army Second Infantry Division) sounded like music to go into battle!! The bar gave me and girlfriend some good drinks, but it wasnt her cup of tea so we left early. I like these kinds of bands (Mayhem like) makes me miss the Ozzfest this year.
