OPETH IN CONCERT:
Swedish progressive metal rockers Opeth are all about keeping listeners on their toes. The band's technically virtuosic jams are a study in contrast, juxtaposing brutal guitar riffing with soft acoustic passages and blood-curdling death growls with melodic choruses. Their live shows play up these opposing elements perfectly, hitting fans with a maelstrom of moods and textures that run the gamut from heart-pounding to serene. At the center of it all is frontman Mikael Akerfeldt, a magnetic performer whose dynamic voice and wild-eyed intensity is the driving force behind ambitious compositions like "Sorceress" and "Will O The Wisp." He's joined on stage by a motley crew of shredders who keep the energy cranked to the max on guitar, bass, drums, and Mellotron – a unique keyboard instrument that lends an eerie, otherworldly vibe to the band's songs. Metal fans looking to have their minds blown continue to turn out in droves to see Opeth play, and they're never disappointed by the band's hard-hitting, adventurous sounds.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Opeth formed in Stockholm in 1990 and spent their early years playing a straight-ahead brand of death metal featuring blast beats and aggressive vocals. By mid-decade the band had begun incorporating elements of jazz, blues, and even classical, and their 1995 debut album Orchid was roundly hailed by critics for its unique blend of styles. The band released three more albums in the '90s but didn't start touring until the release of 2001's Blackwater Park. That album sold nearly 100,000 copies in the US alone, a major feat that drew the band out on their first world tour. By the end of the '00s Opeth was a fixture on the Swedish charts, and American audiences weren't far behind – both 2011's Heritage and 2014's Pale Communion cracked the Top 20 on the US Billboard 200. The band released their 12th studio album Sorceress to another round of critical acclaim in 2016, and followed up with more face-melting sets on their Sorceress World Tour.

Great venue and Opeth is arguably the best live band ever. 🤘
A life-changing experience. I hope to see them again sooner than another 18 years.
First and foremost, the customer service is and as always top tier! Everyone is so nice and helpful. The drinks and food were great. And the entertainment was breathtaking. Opeth was God like and they need to come back. Plus other hard rock and metal bands.
Saw Jimi Hendrix, Zeppelin, Moody Blues, The Who, Stones, and many more when I was younger (76 now), and this was the among the best I've experienced. Opeth was an assault on the senses (in the best possible sense). Musicianship, sound quality, intensity, showmanship--off the charts.
Opeth was an absolutely amazing band and the venue was a great place to see them. The audio mixing and levels were great, the seating options were fantastic. Drinks were at an expected price, but we good sizes and flavors. The line for the merch booth was long, but was well organized and moved faster than any other merch booth I've seen. The bathroom lines (we were on the 2nd floor) were similarly fairly long between bands, but those too moved quickly. Staff was nice. The location was super convenient to easy and well-priced parking in DC. The ONLY negative thing I had to say was how quickly they rushed everyone out of the building, even if waiting for a significant other in the bathroom, after the show was over. Otherwise, the show and venue were fantastic and I would 11/10 go there to see Opeth (or another band) again.
I've seen Opeth 5 times now and each time was a spectacular event! The sound was phenomenal in this venue and this may have been their best show I've ever seen. I will make an effort to see them every time they make it to the area, unless vax/mask requirements are in place as they were a few years ago, then I will not be attending (as with any show that inflicts those mandates). Thank you for presenting such an amazing show!
This show was outstanding. The only other time I was able to see the great band, they had just replaced their former (phenomenal), long time drummer. The performance that night was brilliant, but I know a band is hurting when they have to make a move like that, so they probably couldn't wait to wrap up the tour. They played well, like the pros they are, but... I was really looking forward to this show, with a drummer they've now been working with and who is fully integrated into their rhythm section (the guy who filled in was incredible, but there's no substitute for working together over a long time). For this show, all the bolts were tightened to perfection! The sound was good, and the volume was right for the space (thank you, Mr. soundman, for getting that right!). The set list was sort of, "What would I play to turn somebody on to Opeth", and the playing was totally on. The DC audience clearly loves this band, which the band clearly were aware of, which brought an intimate feel into this pretty big room... I did not expect an 'intimate' experience at this, a metal show, but I got one. VERY GREAT SHOW! Thanks, Opeth, for delivering so brilliantly. Do come again!
This was my first time seeing Opeth live, and I have never really listened to them much. My son , who is 15, is a huge fan, wanted to go see them so I bought the tickets. I am so glad I did. The opening act, Tribulation was fantastic, and spent time talking to me and my son after the show. As for Opeth, Mikael may be one of the best guitarists I have ever seen live. While I am not a huge fan of the growling vocals, his ability to use a clean vocal and growling vocals and play the way he does was inspiring to my son, and showed me I had been missing out on this band over the years. Worth the 6 hour round trip from VA to see them and will certainly look to catch them again if they come back our way
Opeth and their leading man Mikael Akerfeldt didn’t disappoint in anyway when it comes to their musical performance. But why encourage the audience to stand up in a seated show? This selfish behaviour should not be tolerated by the venue and certainly not encouraged by the artists. Are the weak, injured and disabled people less wanted to attend the concerts? They pay the same price for the tickets, but weren’t able to have a full experience of the show — limited by selfish brats. The band was great as always, but a non acceptable behaviour by big parts of the audience and lack of grownups to tell them to show some respect for others.
Sixth time seeing them. So clear, so professional, so on point. I would go to see them just to hear Mykael interact with the crowd. That is the icing on the cake which is the music. He is certainly one of a kind and the band is so tight that it seems they never miss anything. Come back soon!
This was the best concert I have ever experienced. Fantastic song selections from 10 different albums, amazing skill, incredible light show.
Crushing and beautiful at the same time ! Great atmosphere and performance from Tribulation and Opeth! Defiantly a night to remember !
The show was crazy the sound the lights the visuals special thanks to the stuff of the L'Olympia they dud a great job keeping everything in perfect conditions I had the chance to grab a guitar pick from the guitarist I was super impressed
Everyone was hot and metal except for the girl who was yelling SECURITY because someone was to close of her 😅😭.but for real this show was really nice Opeth was just amazing. AND THX FOR THE FREE WATER THAT MOVE SAVE ME FROM DYING 💯💯
This is my 3rd time! And, simply it is just getting better. It was amazing!!! The sound, the visual, and the performance overall. Looking forward to the next time.
Astonishing night, one of my best night ever. First time seeing them live .
I actually attended with my kid I wasn’t sure he was happy for me to join him but that’s how it worked out in the end. The venue was beautiful everything was really well organised there were plenty of bars and I didn’t have to wait on anyone line for long at all if at all. Toilets were clean . Above all The music was awesome the acoustics were great and I thought the bands and all the fans were just having such a good time in yet so civilised and fun and polite. That may not be the kind of review you’d expect for a progressive metal concert but that’s what it was for me
They sounded amazing ! The lights the music the drummer and just everything was great!
This might be my favorite show ever! The sound quality alone is unparalleled and to experience Opeth with fans that knew every single lyric was amazing! Opeth played perfectly as if they were actually projections or figments of our imaginations, my goodness I will love Opeth forever and Riverside made it an unforgettable show. Also I can’t not mention the popcorn for sale being the cherry on top. Ethereal melodies in a venue that looked like some dukes summer home. I don’t think anyone could top that
