OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW

RETURN TO AUSTRALIA IN SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER

PERFORMING “BLONDE ON BLONDE”

WITH SPECIAL GUEST VALERIE JUNE

Acclaimed Statesiders OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW will return to Australia for the first time in eight years to play a string of East Coast dates this September and October, in addition to their already-announced performance at the Caloundra Music Festival. On their Australian shows, Old Crow Medicine Show will pay tribute to their music icon, Bob Dylan, by playing his seminal 1966 album, Blonde On Blonde, in full.

Hailing from the Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Memphian and fellow Tennessean VALERIE JUNE, who has shared the stage with the likes of Sharon Jones, Sturgill Simpson, Jake Bugg and more, will join Old Crow Medicine Show on their Australian run, rounding out an authentic ‘Taste of Americana’ double-bill for local audiences.

Old Crow Medicine Show and the beguiling Valerie June promise to deliver a night of authentic Tennessee tunes when they touch down in Australia later this year, traversing country, blues, roots and more, with a little bit of soul and gospel thrown in for good measure.

  • great opening bands!

by MKMEL on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

This show had great coherence and lots of energy. I was a little disappointed because I bought the tickets thinking it was a Gillian Welch show. She played with the David Rawlings Machine but didn't play any of her solo material. The Felice Brothers were a lot of fun. Great venue for the show.

  • Show was decent, venue horrible.

by musicjaime on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

Overall the show was decent. I had not seen J.T. Earle before and enjoyed his set. The Felice Brothers didn't really do it for me. Don't care for the singer's style and there was more running/jumping around for show than musical talent in my humble opinion. DRM was great, as always. Unfortunately this is where the "venue horrible" comment comes in to play the most. Every time I go to the HOB I swear I will never go back. I will have to be desperate to go here ever again. During DRM you could barely hear them over the din of people talking at the bars. People were just rude and did not even pay attention. Most of the night as well they spent more time coming and going from the bars/bathrooms and talking than they did listening to the show. OCMS set at the end was good. High energy and loud enough to drown out those who were there for God-only-knows what reason...certainly not to listen to good music.

  • just a little bit more OCMS please!

by swampyankee on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Well the lineup was great and the venue just about perfect -- no crowding even though it was sold out and nice and cool on a muggy summer night. The opener, Justin Townes Earle was terrrific, but played briefly! The next act, the Felice Bros. were garage band smashers, big on display with much less talent than anyone else on the night's bill. I know they pleased some in the crowd, but overall they kept the stage way too long for this fan's liking. David Rawlings and Gillian Welch were extraordinary as usual, if a bit too slow in tempo for the entire set. It was great when OCMS in their form came on and fired up the place, amazing talent, incredible energy and the encore was phenomenal. If only they'd played a bit longer set and had Felice Bros. exit about twenty minutes earlier.

  • Huh?

by Nickname12345 on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

Justin Townes Earl was awesome. The Felix Brothers were the worst band I've seen in a long time. They were drunks who could barely play their instruments. The David Rawlings Machine was good. I wish the entire night featured more Gillian Welch. Old Crow Medicine show played a couple of great songs, but tanked when they invited the other bands back up. If only concert tickets were refundable...

  • The big surprise tour is an amazing

by tugntt31 on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The show was one of the best shows I have seen. The 4 bands swing in and out intermixing through out that just brought new life to their great songs, A feeling of genuine good friends and great musicians. Must see show, this is a real hoedown.

  • Heck of a show, top to bottom

by thesnarlingdog on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Justin Townes Earle - Down home country charm, very impressed live Felice Bros. - Energy and intensity, didn't know what to expect and not sure they totally fit the genre of the evening but loved it anyway Gillian Welch and David Rawlings - A bit of a lull in the concert, but a great rendition of OCMS's "I hear Them All" segueing into This Land is Your Land was cool. That man slays on the acoustic guitar. I only wish they had brought out OCMS to play The Weight, the one thing I really wanted to hear most. OCMS - Rocked the house except for Ketch's horrible emo tight pants. Brought out some classics to play with the full group at the end.

  • Old Crows tear it up!!

by longliner88 on 8/6/09Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Flat out amazing show! The Old crows are a must see. Tho the intro band (the brothers) were not very good.

  • Phenomenal. Now fire the Felices.

by StickyFingers on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

In a concert experience reminiscent of the Last Waltz, with incredible artists sharing a microphone, and your mind being blown when you realize how many amazing musicians are sharing the stage, I had no idea one person could screw all this up: that horrible violinist/washboard player of the Felice Brothers. I could have done without that whole band. Sharing the stage with Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings and Justin Townes Earle, people who have shaped the genre of music you are performing, I would expect a little more respect for these artists instead of running around splashing water on the audience and acting like you are a member of a hiphop group, fake rapping. The Felice Brothers ruined an otherwise outstanding evening, an amazing display of bluegrass talent. The tunes played were all excellent choices, including great covers of Dylan and Neil Young songs, and artists swapping tunes and collaborating. Wonderful musicianship by great performers.

  • The Big Surprise Tour

by JackBurton on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome show, the whole 3 or 4 hours were bursting with energy from the band and the crowd, and I loved how all the performers played together at the end. I was a little disappointed that the Dave Rawlings Machine didn't do more Gillian stuff, but it was alright because she did an awesome Miss Ohio encore, and Dave's stuff is also great. The only thing I really didn't like was the Fellice brothers. They weren't at all what you'd expect at a bluegrass show, but a lot of the crowd seemed to like them anyway. Also, I think it's worth mentioning that during the encore, Gillian strapped on a Les Paul, and they played ACDC's "It's a Long Way to the Top"

  • Alt-Country Mix At Its best

by MusicMaestro on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Looking at the lineup no one would have expected these groups to have too much in common, except a love of the South and traditional country music stretching back through Johnny Cash to Hank Williams. The four groups, Justin Townes Earle, The Felice Brothers, The Dave Rawlings Machine and Old Crow Medicine Show (listed in order of appearance) played together and both individual sets. The audience really ranged wide from college kids to old timers. Most of the fans came to hear a specific group, maybe as a favorite, but had knowledge of the other groups. After an intro group jam on "The Big Surprise" led by a dark and raucous Felice Bros., JTE and his partner took the stage with a mix of country, honky tonk and an olde time Nashville sound. JTE is vastly different from his father and middle-namesake, both in appearance and sound. It was a good start, but he was way outdone by the Felice Brothers who took the stage for a 45 minute set that was a mix of rock and electric country, poetry and dancing that brought to mind The Doors more than anything traditional. The crowd ate it up, definitely a fan favorite. After a 30 minute break, The Dave Rawlings Machine came on. Dave and his wife Gillian Welch don't tour around these parts much and haven't had an album out since Soul Journey over six years ago (last time through was for the Sweet Honey Revue tour with Emmylou Harris about three years ago). The set consisted a mix of DWM songs and covers including Cortez the Killer and closing with Queen Jane Approximately. Dave's playing was great but his guitar didn't sound so good and wasn't really designed for the type of lead he plays. A better guitar with a cutaway style would have been more appropriate. Though I like his songs, his voice does get a bit whiney over time and unfortunately Gillian was never allowed a lead. To be honest, I prefer her songs and voice over his and was disappointed by the set list. They had pretty much lost the crowd half-way through and conversation was louder than the music. I would hope they'd come through town again and at a more intimate venue also, highlighting more of Gillian! OCMS had a great set, with Ketch Secor on lead walking us through his local experience and a rowdy set, closing it out with "Wagon Wheel" of course with the other musicians onstage. Gillian did get a chance to lead on "Miss Ohio" a classic, though I think "Wrecking Ball" would have made for a better jam. All-in-all a great show, an interesting mix (and sometimes clash) of style but that's representative of culture and ,music today--anything goes and boundaries are never clear.

  • Old Crow w/ David and Gillian rocked

by theABomb on 8/6/09Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 5 out of 5

That was probably one of the best shows I have ever been to. I felt bad for Gillian, she seemed a bit out of her element with all those dudes. The only down point of the show was that "fiddle player" from the felice brothers. He was slightly obnoxious all the time. He crossed the line when he hocked a lugie on the audience at the end of a song. What an idiot. It seemed as if they found his on the streets in Jersey and put a fiddle in his hand and told him to act crazy. Other than that guy, it was a totally amazing experience. David Rawlings is my new favorite guitar player. The songwriting and covers were on the money as well.

  • Old Crow was Awesome

by Hughie on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The show was amazing. I felt like I was at a folk festival! old crow rocked and so did all the openers. so much energy.

  • This was some good music

by DudefromMDI on 8/6/09Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 5 out of 5

This show was, to me, really good. It was cool to see Justin Townes Earl. The bow tie was a funny touch. The new tune was pretty rockin too. He and Corey seem very talented and we hope to catch them again sometime. Wish we could have heard more. I hadn't really heard of the Felice brothers before, but they held their own too. They seemed to have a different style than the other three on the tour, but it was good to hear a new band. I'll probably check out their new CD. David Rawlings and Gillian Welch were fantastic. "Sweet Tooth", and their version of "Queen Jane Approximately' were flat out amazing. David can play a very good guitar and with Gillian on rhythm and Morgan (from OCMS) on bass they played a very impressive set. When OCMS took the stage the energy lifted even higher. It had been building all night and they ran with it. The crowd jumped and shouted and they grooved right along too. "Humdinger" was sweet and the slower version of "Caroline" made it feel more personal. Highlights: Can't hardly wait JTE, Queen Jane Approximately DRM, Tell it to me, OCMS, Boy from Lawrence County TFB

  • Great Show

by JBoss on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Gillian Welch was awesome, David Rawlings was great, Old Crow guys were high energy, and Justin Townes Earle was a very nice surprise.

  • What a party!

by Mountebank on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best shows I have attended in years! Sometimes there were just 2 on stage, sometimes 4, sometimes 6 and sometimes 14! The energy level was through the roof, and the heart in lyrics, singing, harmonies and instruments were incredible. They all rocked, flat-picked and rambled like no other. I would attend this show again for sure and would recommend it to anyone, even if it is not your thang. They played for 3.5 hours. Now that is giving you your money's worth!

  • Awesome

by newhippie on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Solid show, tremendous energy from all the acts. Having 15 musicians on the stage all jamming was really fantastic.

  • Big Surprise, Old Crow played 5 songs

by angy099 on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

I've seen OCMS once before at the Filmore in San Francisco. While the venues were comparable, the show was not. I came last night expecting to see Old Crow live, instead I got some jam band session with too many instruments. The musicians seemed like they were having fun, but the quality was lacking. When five or fewer musicians were on stage, the acoustics were great, and the energy was high enough without sacrificing the purity and clarity of the music. Overall the concert had good energy, the musicians were undoubtedly very talented, but I wanted to see more Old Crow, and way less of the a-melodic Felices (sp?) Brothers.

  • Bang for your buck

by MrPez on 8/6/09House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Great show all around. It runs a little long at over 3 1/2 hours, but you get to see a mingling of all the acts playing with each other throughout the evening so it is always fresh and exciting.

  • The Big Surprise

by mikeyallswell on 8/5/09Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Well. the "Big Surprise Tour" featuring Old Crow Medicine Show, The Felice Brothers, Justin Townes Earl, and The David Rawlings Machine w/ Gillian Welch kicked off last night at The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom.(New Hampshire's premiere live music and entertainment venue)and i would say that the tour most definitely lived up to it's name. The show began with EVERYONE from all of the bands on stage playing a moody, almost haunting song that seemed to be written on the spot with repeating lyric "it was the day of the big surprise" there were two banjos an accordian, three or four guitars,a mandolin, a drummer, washboard, two fiddles, pedal steel, keyboards, stand up bass, etc...just beautiful man, 15 people on stage in all...then they all left the stage except for Justin townes Earl, his mandolin and pedal steel player, and the bass player from OCMS..they went on to play some of the purest, simple but sweet country music I've ever seen performed...three or four songs later my friend turned to me with a look of awe on his face and said "why does everyone wanna make songwriting so complicated?" I just shrugged my shoulders and kept on smiling...next Earl brought out the Felice Brothers...which included a drummer, accordian player, guitarist and a fiddle...the enerygy level was rising as the felice brothers' lead singer/guitarist was channeling early Dylan...they played a song or two with Earl, and then were left on their own for a few songs and they really got the crowd going...they were definitely the most "electric" band of the night as far as drums and electric guitars...they had a couple mellow numbers that were pale in comparison to their rocking songs, but that made for a perfect smoke break...to finish their set, a couple guys from OCMS came out and did two or three songs and it was time for a well deserved break (must have been 110 degrees in that place last night) A toke or two later the second set started up with just David Rawlings and Gillian Welch on stage. they did some incredible singing...one tune "I Hear Them All" was hilighted by a "This Land is Your Land" jam in the middle. I was beautiful to hear almost everyone there singing along with that one...They were also joined by a couple members of OCMS for a few tunes including an amazing version of Dylan's "Queen Jane Approximately"...it was a quiet set overall, but when everyone joined them at the end of their set it was really picking up speed..and i must say that i have never seen ANYONE play the EVERLOVING shit out of a little classical guitar like this David Rawlings did...finally it was Old Crow's turn to really own the stage...and when they did the crowd was in a foot-stomping frenzy! I mean during one tune "Hard to Tell" I have never seen so many white people dancing in my life! OCMS continued to blast though some crowd favorites like "Caroline" and "Down Home Girl" and by the end EVERYONE was back on stage to close it down with a rousing version of "Wagon Wheel" and a superb version of Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay".....I don't know what else to say about this incredible show except that i wish that everyone who ever told me they don't like country music was there to witness it.

  • Not enough Old Crow

by Musicsports on 8/5/09Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 1 out of 5

We traveled with another couple from RI to see Old Crow and was very, very disappointed to find that they had their other bands playing with the them the WHOLE TIME. Old Crowe is an amazing band and we will go back to see them however they need to play their own music. I didn't pay to see a jam session with bands they like. I paid to hear Old Crow play Old Crow music. I think they played maybe 5 of their own songs. Again what a disappointed to travel all that way for that.
