OLD 97'S IN CONCERT:

Alt-country pioneers the Old 97's continue to treat fans to the rollicking live shows that earned them their salt back in the mid-'90s. Featuring frontman Rhett Miller's electric vocals and a boot-stomping rhythm section, the band's performances are never short on energy, creating the perfect atmosphere for barn-burners like "Time Bomb" and "Doreen." Hot on the heels of their 2013 collaboration with country legend Waylon Jennings, the band hits the road for a 2014 tour that's sure to satisfy rock and country fans alike.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Dallas in 1993, the Old 97's existed as a popular local bar band before their 1994 debut album Hitchhike to Rhome brought them on a national tour. Their 1995 follow-up LP Wreck Your Life attracted the eye of label execs at Elektra, who signed them for 1997's Too Far to Care. Hailed as pioneers of the burgeoning alt-country scene, the band continued to record and tour, making their first appearance on the Billboard 200 in 2001 with Satellite Rides. Since then, the band's reputation has grown with each successive album, gaining an additional boost from their boisterous live shows. Back on the road in 2014, the band will treat fans to marathon sets that include cuts from their acclaimed 2013 collaboration with country giant Waylon Jennings. Over the course of their career, Old 97's have brought countless venues to capacity, like Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"As always, one of the best live bands in the U.S. The best kept secret around."

"The group of four performed with high energy for an hour and 45 minutes, straight, no breaks. Great performance. If you don't know about the Old 97's, you are missing a great band."

"Unbelievably wonderful! Don't go unless you plan to dance and sweat. Old 97s put on the most reliably kick ass rock show around and have been doing so for years."

  • Old 97's were great...but

by GDub on 8/14/24Madrid Theatre - Kansas CityRating: 4 out of 5

The band had a great setlist prepared, and really brought it to the show. No clock watching ;) Not a big fan of the venue. The Madrid Theater is a beautiful old building, but parking was non-existent and the sound was awful. Not sure if it was due to where we sat (upper deck and off to the side), or just the acoustic characteristics of the room. Whatever it was we had a hard time even understanding spoken words...much less lyrics as they were sung. Luckily I know all the songs!

  • Old 97's still care

by Jerry H. on 8/14/24Madrid Theatre - Kansas CityRating: 4 out of 5

31 years together as a band, and they still perform like they're trying to gain an audience. Maybe not the energy of early shows, but they certainly don't cash it in. Rhett and Murray still sound great and Ken and Philip still rock. The opening act on the other hand was....uh, not good. It took me a bit to figure out if he was some sort of comedy act.

  • They've still got it!

by Longtime fan on 8/14/24Madrid Theatre - Kansas CityRating: 4 out of 5

I'd have given 5 stars had the Madrid theatre bar and the merch sales not have done the cynical cashless thing. That's a way that research shows causes event attendees to spend more, and I notice the bar took cash for tips. So, it's clearly nothing to do with health matters. Back to Old 97's, it was really nice to see them again when they could do two hours instead of 45 minutes ridiculously/inappropriately in the middle of a bunch of acts. I drove 3 1/2 hours for the concert. And, I've seen them 11+ times over the years. Hence, I think it's time for them to do another show in Wichita. And, a place called the Wave would work. And, their forthcoming bill-mates Fastball have played there...

  • Amateur Hour

by Fred on 8/14/24Madrid Theatre - Kansas CityRating: 2 out of 5

First off, the listing did not show o warm-up act, but then they subjected us to over a half hour of some individual guy singing along to lame pre-recorded music. Then a single roadie took almost half an hour to get everything set up (that should have already been set up since the warm-up act didn’t use a band or any instruments). And then finally, the Old 97’s had horrible sound quality and a pretty anemic show.

  • Always a great time!

by Jan on 8/6/24Delmar Hall - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

The Old 97s are always a great time! The band played a lot of favorites, as well as newer songs also. They sounded great! We had a wonderful time.

I’ve been going to shows for over 25 years. Every show is as good or better than the last!

  • Great show!!!

by MellieMel on 8/5/24Delmar Hall - Saint LouisRating: 4 out of 5

Show was great! Old 97s always put on an entertaining show! Love, love, love their music, lyrics and energy!!! Wish I would have found them sooner. Didn’t give 5 stars because unfortunately I don’t love Delmar Hall. IMO not a great seat anywhere. :/

  • Very good, have not lost a beat after 30 yrs.

by JB on 8/5/24Delmar Hall - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Outstanding, they were tight and it was a great show. I did not care for the opening act much.

  • Great show, beautiful venue...freezing

    by kerm1016 on 8/5/24The Bluestone - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

The Old 97s were amazing, as always and the old church was a really beautiful venue. Normally, indoor venues will get hot, so I dressed with that in mind. The air conditioning in this place had no trouble keeping up. I was so cold I had struggled to really enjoy the show. I danced to warm up, but I'm not as young as I used to be and couldn't keep that up for the whole show. I would definitely come back, I would just make sure to where long pants and bring a jacket.

  • Okay

    by 123 on 8/5/24The Bluestone - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

The sound quality wasn’t very good, and I could barely hear them sing under the sound of the instruments.

  • Old 97s in Columbus rocked!

Awesome show with a great set list. Too-flight musicianship and vocals.

  • Awesome band/awesome show

by Pat on 8/4/24The Bluestone - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

My 4th time seeing Old 97s. First time in an all ages venue so I brought my 14 year old son. Now they have two lifelong fans. The Bluestone was a cool place to see a show too.

  • Great show!

The opening band was amazing. The Old 97’s played a great mixture of new and classic songs. Highly recommend seeing them!

Never miss an opportunity to see the Old 97s! I have seen them over 25 times and always love them. This show had a few great holiday songs and a bunch of their well known songs. All performed at a very high level. Simply and outstanding show by an outstanding band!

  • Old 97’s show was one of the best shows ever!

by SK on 10/3/23Empire Underground - AlbanyRating: 5 out of 5

We saw the Old 97’s 30th Anniversary tour and attended the last show of this year’s tour. The venue Empire Underground in Albany, NY was perfect to see such a great band as the Old 97’s! I felt as though we had a private show with the band given it was a small venue and we were right in front of stage! It was as if I stepped back in time like the early days of seeing this band in the mid 90s! We also really loved John Hollier and his talented set of musicians as the opener! Everything was easy and both bands sounded amazing with great stage presence as always!! Will definitely see them again if another show comes up in the US!!

  • Old 97's in Albany NY

by Carrie Anne on 10/3/23Empire Underground - AlbanyRating: 5 out of 5

AMAZING show! Empire Underground is a fantastic venue I felt like I was back in the 90's in NYC at some back street club. Small intimate setting to see my favorite band. Rhett Miller and the boys were on point with a great set list and tons of energy. Really hope they play here again !

  • Old 97s Pier17

by D. on 10/1/23The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Great lineup! American Aquarium followed by Drive By Truckers and closing with the Old 97s. Great energy by all three bands. Pier 17 (Manhattan) is an impressive venue with an excellent sound system. This is an outdoor, rooftop venue and was surprised by how good the show sounded.

  • Always Great to Watch!

by Hitomi on 10/1/23The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Rooftop at Pier 17 is great venue, but sadly it started raining in the middle of the set, but Old 97s put on a wonderful show. High energy and lots of old standards mixed in with their newer songs and of course Timebomb as the closer.
