Three hours I'll never get back
by BalletGal on 12/21/10Scherr Forum-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand OaksRating: 2 out of 5This was one of those productions that I think attracted family and friends. It was similar to a 5th grade talent show in a gymnasium. I got stuck taking an elderly relative who had never seen a live ballet before.
Of the troupe, if you want to call it that, there were only a few standouts: the sugar plum fairy, the russian pair and the brunette dancer who truly had what most closely resembled Balanchine's ideal dancer's build. Out of the entire troupe, these dancers had proper form and execution.
Of all the rest, where do I start? I am classically trained as a dancer, and it was painful to see the myriad of form breaks and improperly executed moves. The nutcracker prince lost his shoe while twirling in place, which points to bad fit/improperly fit shoes. Most of the dancers were, from a dancer's standpoint, overweight (although normal in terms of just being a Jane on the street) and sounded like a stampeded herd when they all had to jump around. Just really painful to watch.
Knowing the demographic of the area and reading the vanity ads in the program, it seems many of these young girls are under the impression they have talent to go on to the ABT or Broadway because that's what their family is telling them. Their parents have the means to fund it. They're in for a rude awakening. American Idol, step aside.
The tiniest girls and boys, those who played the kittens and mice...were delightful. But this is three hours of my life I will never get back, and I couldn't even drink during it.
