EXCELLENT!!!!!!!! Superior symphony and the cutest sugar plum fairies ever!
The Los Gatos Ballet company and the San Jose Youth Symphony gave an amazing performance.
Although the show did start late (was hard to keep a two year old waiting) , once they started the show was fantastic. My grandson was mesmerized and loved it. He was swaying to the music and loved watching all the dancers. This is definitely a new family tradition that we will carry on every year!
This show is easy to the eyes with someone who has no prior experience watching classical ballet. If you have watched nutcrackers before with a professional ballet company, you will see dramatic differences.
The music was cut in several places so the whole traditional experience was less than expected. The horn section was way out of tune at the start of the first act just playing one simple long note. Strings were surprisingly good given the level of the orchestra players. The set design was imaginative but had some issues. The lady with the skirt full of children was untraditional, kind of silly, and had no particular significance to the story line. The backdrop winter forest scene was drawn with a significant jarring flaw in the perspective as the tree tops did not align along a path to a vanishing point. The otherwise spectacular layout idea was ruined in its effect by this poor execution. During the various shows in front of Clara and the Nutcracker Prince the performers acknowledged the theater audience, but not the story audience which was the two of them sitting on the throne. From a continuity point of view this was rather rude behavior for dancers honoring the hero and heroine. Also, that the royalty had no courtiers joining in watching the show was weird. The costumes were well executed. The individual dancing was quite good but the group moves were out of sync with the music and with each other. The flash effect of simultaneous movements was planned but never achieved. The music was what was expected of a youth orchestra. Saturday night should have been packed. Instead, the theater was only half filled at best. At the balcony level in Flint Center all the front row seats are blocked from seeing the stage because of the edge wall. I looks like the box seats at this level also have this problem. You have to be at the edge of your seats to see and this is very uncomfortable for the duration of the performance. Next time I would be in the Orchestra level for the same price.
The dancers/actors did very well, my grand daughter couldn't take her eyes off them!
I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I thought the sets and costumes were top notch. But it was the children that made the event so special. The choreography was very well done so that everyone would shine.
This show was excellent. Very professional and well done!
A great event, high quality dancing, sets, and orchestra.
A fabulous production by the Los Gatos Ballet. I look forward to the spring show
I have seen lots of Nutcracker's and this one was among the top 2, second only to San Fransico ballet. The live orchestra was amazing. The dancers were well trained. The costumes made the performance come to life. The acrobats who performed the dragon, made a big impact. Good job Los Gatos Ballet. Wow! I only wish I had gotten a closer seat, next year.
WHY I WATCH BALLET: My son is a professional ballet dancer in training at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, DC (so as you would imagine, I've seen the Nutcracker countless times). HOW I CAME TO WATCH LOS GATOS BALLET'S NUTCRACKER: I've known two of the teenage student dancers since they were young children. I came from Santa Cruz to watch & support them. WHO I BROUGHT: Loving the Nutcracker as I do, never tiring of the gorgeous music & the endless ways the staging can be changed up to appeal to the target audience, I decided I'd kill two birds with one stone. I'd attend Los Gatos Ballet's production to support my young ballet dancing friends and to introduce this beloved ballet to two dear adult friends who'd never been to the ballet, a risky choice. I wasn't sure it would be a quality production so i was running the risk of putting them off ballet for life! OUTCOME OF THE EVENING: Put off they were not! My friends and I were delighted with the production! They, and I once again, were awed by the beauty & grace, the strength & discipline, the art & splendor that is ballet. MY RECOMMENDATION: avail yourself of this opportunity to see live theater/ballet, to support local, young growing dancers (& musicians! Did I mention the Los Gatos Ballet student company had the awesome privilege of dancing to live music performed by the San Jose Youth Symphony?) and to be in the audience & experience the thrill of watching world class dancers perform (we saw Frances Chung & Gennadi Nedvigin) and inspire both the young people they share the stage with and us, the lucky audience!
Los Gatos ballet delivered the most amazing nutcracker performance my familiy and I have ever seen. The customes were breathtaking one after the other Wow! The dancers danced their hearts out and it was a very professional and delightful show... We enjoyed every moment!
My first time seeing the Nutcracker. Enjoyed the show. Dancers were graceful, the little ones adorable, and the costumes were awesome too.
We had a wonderful time, the dancers were extremely talented.
Even with the electrical outage, the ballet was grand as usual. The River Center staff were very accommodating to our needs and very helpful.
Except for the three hour delay my wife and granddaughter enjoyed it.
Lovely production. Loved the symphony. First half seemed to move a little slow, but picked up nicely after the interval.
We have seen nutcracker several times, but this one was by far the best one we have seen. Took my 4 year old along for her first theater experience and she just loved it!
I had never seen the Nutcracker before and it was amazing! I truly enjoyed it.
