The performance was amazing! The audience on the other hand…
by Emily on 12/16/24The Pasadena Civic - PasadenaRating: 4 out of 5Nutcracker has always been one of mine and my friend’s favorite ballets. It’s the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit, especially once finals week has started. We went with my mom and my stepdad (who had never seen Nutcracker live before), and since we bought platinum tickets, we got to meet one of the ballerinas. Once again, the performance did not fail to impress: the dancing, the acrobatics, the stage, everything about it was amazing.
However, the behavior of some of the audience members did sour the experience. The day we picked to come was apparently the day multiple elementary schools field tripped to see the show. Now, I don’t have a problem with that: I think it’s a good way to help kids get into the arts. This does, however, pose some problems. Mainly that, at the end of the day, they are children, and a show with no words can be difficult for kids to stay engaged. However, that should not excuse constantly talking or moving around throughout the show when others are trying to pay attention. It doesn’t help that the adults would barely do anything to quiet them down.
In the second act, I assume to keep the kids engaged, the audience started clapping along to the rhythm of the music. I will admit, during the Russian Dance, it did work well with the music, since the Russian Dance is a very high-energy piece. However, when they start clapping to the pieces that are slower and not as high in energy, such as the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, it can be distracting, not just to other audience members who are trying to enjoy the show, but possibly to the performer as well since it could throw them off (especially once the claps start going off-rhythm). My two cents is that there needs to be a reminder to everyone, especially children, before the show about audience etiquette, and to be mindful of, not just the people on the stage, but to their fellow audience members.
Other than a less-than-pleasant audience experience, the show was brilliant. All the dancers did an amazing job and I hope they continue to bring the same holiday joy to everyone else.
