Maybe I set my expectations too high.
by Educatrix on 12/7/12Peabody Opera House - St. LouisRating: 2 out of 5I went expecting to be dazzled by costumes and sets and see a real spectacle of a performance. The costumes and sets were nice, but average. The St. Louis Ballet uses prettier costumes (although I did love the mice in this one). I expected more Russian folklore touches, too. Really, there was the addition of the Snow Queen and Grandfather Frost, who were only in it for a few minutes, and that was about it. Of course the Russian Dance was good, but most regular productions have a good Russian Dance anyway.
They made some other strange choices. There is a character of the Dove of Peace, who takes Masha (Clara) and the Prince to the Land of Peace or somesuch instead of the Land of Sweets. Which means that there was no Chocolate, Coffee, Tea, etc. They did those three dances but as Spain, Arabia, and China, plus the Russian dance for a total of four different countries represented bringing wishes for world peace and friendship.
And the mice. Someone call an exterminator, because they just wouldn't die. Halfway through Act II, they're back! And then they came back again. What the heck???
Other bothersome points: The music was excessively loud--more like a movie than a ballet. The party scenes had some very good parts, but overall dragged quite a bit. Also, they incorporated dozens of local kids in various places, and I'm sure it was a thrill for them and their families, but I thought they really distracted from the professionals. It was very hard to watch the Snowflakes in particular.
My little girl, who loves the Nutcracker, was bored and wanted to go home. She slept through most of Act II.
I don't want to be completely negative, but these are things I wish I'd known. I did like some things. Drosselmeyer was great, they had some very engaging animal characters that they added with each of the different countries, and they did a nice job with the mice and the battle. And it wouldn't be fair to leave out that the dancing itself was very good in places (although uneven). But overall, I feel like now I'm going to have to buy tickets to see the St. Louis Ballet's production, because I don't feel like this gave me my Nutcracker fix for the year.
