Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football History

From the Four Horsemen to the Gipper to Rudy to "Theismann for Heisman," Notre Dame has a legendary football program. The school has 11 national championships in football, but that doesn't begin to measure the shadow the Irish have cast across the game. It started with Knute Rockne, who coached from 1918 to 1930 and only lost 12 games in that span. It was Rockne who delivered the famous halftime speech in which he invoked the deathbed plea of a former player, George Gipp, to "win one for the Gipper." There was the "Game of the Century" in 1966 in which the 9-0 Irish, under coach Ara Parseghian, played the 9-0 Michigan State Spartans to a 10-10 tie.

Notre Dame has had seven Heisman Trophy winners, including Paul Hornung, Johnny Lujack and Tim Brown, the team’s most recent recipient, who became the first wide receiver to be awarded. More unforgettable moments from Fighting Irish alumni include Joe Montana and the Chicken Soup Game and Tony Rice running the option offense all the way to a national championship in 1988.

University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football at Notre Dame Stadium

Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana was designed by the same firm, Osborn Engineering, that designed the original Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. It was built in 1930. Watching over the proceedings is Touchdown Jesus, the nickname given to the mural — Millard Sheets' The Word of Life — on the nearby Hesburgh Library.

    Navy vs. Notre Dame

by asa115 on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

Parking at the new Meadowlands Stadium is horrendous. $25 to park, an hour wait to get to your spot in the lot, and more than an hour to exit. Might be nice to have signs directing towards the Lincoln Tunnel or the GWB from the parking lot. VIP Pepsi Gate is not clearly marked. Section 209 does not have adequate directions from the gate. I was so misdirected by stadium personnel that I did not get to my seat until the final minutes of the first quarteer.

    Notre Dame vs Navy

by Anonymous on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

I never saw so many Irishmen so quiet for so long. Navy dominated, an amazing win in an amazing facility.

Over all our day was great, the only down point is that the bathrooms were not well kept.

    NDvsNAVY

by Anonymous on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

It was an amazing stadium and the game was so much fun. Only thing is that someone had matching tickets from us from stub hub, but since we got them from ticketmaster was got to stay in the seats. It was a little scary to think that someone recieved the same tickets and they both scanned... could've been an issue

Nice venue for a great tradition- steeped game.

by Beersnob on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

Weather was great, seats were comfortable. Big screens in the corners of the stadium allowed for great viewing, Guinness was on tap withother good beers; a tasty treat if you don't mind paying the price of a 6-pack for a glass of beer. And Navy won!

Nice Day but still lots of problems at NMS

by BMMMmm on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

Nice weather, nice crowd, good seats but wasn't expecting Navy to route Notre Dame. New Meadowlands Stadium continues to have serious problems with their Parking lot staff not knowing which way is up. and disfunctional concession stands., undermanned poorly trained and constantly out of stock on basic staples.

    New Meadowlands Review

by NavyDad2012 on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

The stadium was great. Every seat provided a perfect view. Staff was friendly and helpful. Interactive personalized video screens inside and out made for a great game day experience. It felt like we were at Navy's home field. Jumbotrons at concessions stands!

    Meadowlands Mistake

by JerseyJerry on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

Being a ND fan, the game was a disappointment.. What really bothered me was the New Meadowlands Arena. Much too compact! The seats squeezed together and the walkways can only handle two people across. That would cause a terrible bottleneck in some sort of emergency. Also, $25 for parking is another reason I will not be going back for any event.

    College Football - Always fun!

by salc on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

Regardless of who you were routing for, the day was perfect to watch a football game. Our seats were fantastic - on the 40 yard line - 25 rows back. Great day.

    Navt Nortre Dame

by Anonymous on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

Everything was fine except for the parking. We forced into a lot we did not want. We came off route17 and used 120 Planton road entrance. We could not park near the Pepsi gate because we were routed away. We were not "late'. We saw cars coming off route3, parkway gooing into where we wanted to park an hour after we arrived. I know Meadowlands parking. Have been a Jet ticket holder for 20 years. This was not your finest moment..

    Notre Dame Navy football game

by Anonymous on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

The game was great! More importantly, we were sitting in handicapped seating section 225 and the guest services person, Thomas T. could not have been kinder, more attentive, or helpful. He walked my step-father to the bathroom and back when I couldn't because my hands were filled with my 14 month old. He checked on us often and asked if my step-father needed any assistance or did I need help with the baby. He was outstanding and deserves to be commended for his behavior and work.

    Notre Dame vs. Navy

by JiffyPops on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

The new Meadowlands stadium was very clean but the signage to get to your seat was quite poor. Also, security to get in caused a huge delay and we missed the opening kickoff.

by Milkshakeman on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

My cost was 80.00 per ticket...which in hind sight was way too much for a college football game. Will not make the mistake again

    Notre Dave vs Navy Midshipmen

by Ed203 on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

Great game, Navy put it on Notre Dame. When the fighter planes brought Navy out, it sent chills up everyone spine. I took my 8 year old son and we had a blast. See you at next year game. GO NAVY BEAT ARMY!
