    Oliver

by Riley330 on 7/23/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - Raleigh

The show was spectacular! Actors were very talented and the troop used many local children in the ensemble which made it even more enjoyable. Kudos to the entire cast and crew of Oliver! The theater, however, was terribly warm. It was distracting to look over the audience and see hundreds of playbills being used to fan the patrons. An otherwise lovely Saturday evening out on the town was made miserable due to a very sweaty 2+ hours. I hadn't visited the Memorial Auditorium in several years and, after this experience, I'm afraid I won't be back.

The children were fabulous! As were the adults! An abundance of talent on one stage!

    Oliver - Excellent

by MadameWrite on 7/21/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - Raleigh

This production was excellent in every aspect. The costumes, sets and music set a wonderful stage for this extremely talented cast. Acting was well done, the timing and flow of the story was seamless and the singers gave life to the songs' words and the tone they set. I would highly recommend this production to anyone who enjoys theater.

    Oliver (Wednesday evening)

by NCNorsk on 7/20/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - Raleigh

The performance was a bit disappointing. The good: the youth and local performers were great to see in a professional production. The orchestra was excellent and beautifully conducted. The set was interesting, as the cast repositioned it quite often to give us different locals and views of the city. This worked very well. The vocals and choreography were well above average. The bad: The worst was the A/C failed during the first act and the theater became quite uncomfortable. As for the production, the sound levels were varied and dialog was difficult to understand at times. I hesitate to say it, but the young man who played Oliver, was wooden. He was more of a prop than the lead character. His vocals were quite good but somehow lacked for emotion. This detracted from the overall plot. The dramatic climax came up short. Either I missed something or there was a disjoint in the way the scene was blocked?

Oliver - Great Songs TO hear again

by MTPleased on 7/19/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - Raleigh

Performance was well done and I was impressed with the precision of the troup since some are from NC, some not. Means having to pull it together upon arrival...worked out well. The sound was not great, so it was hard to catch the dialog, but it was great to hear that cavalcade of songs that were in there again. Forgotten how many great tunes came out of that musical. Enjoyed it and my 87 year old Mother stayed awake the whole time, THAT means it was good!

    Steel Magnolias- fantastic

by tessyboo on 5/3/12Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

This was just as good as any production I've production I've seen on broadway. All the actresses were wonderful, but Beth Leavel stole the show in the last act.

    Good acting

by HusbandOnDate on 5/3/12Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

Steel Magnolias was well executed by a small cast of talented ladies. Mixed with good humor, the characters pulled you in and touched your emotions. As a gentleman, I took my wife for her enjoyment (she loves chick flicks) but found I personally enjoyed the evening as well. The one thing that was annoying was the persistent negativity toward Christians in the script, as if they were lower class people (don't understand why that was brought out so many times, when they only have limited content to include in a theatre setting). For this reason, I give it 3 Stars instead of 4.

    Steel Magnolias Was A Hit!

by hested1 on 5/3/12Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

Five self proclaimed "Steel Magnolias" attended the Saturday matinee and were blown away by how good the play, actors and set was. We weren't real sure how the script would play out since it all took place in Truvy's Beauty Shop, but it was written beautifully. Alhough we each knew the lines by heart (and have quoted them to each other throughout the years!) there was enough fresh material and small changes to keep the play original. I would not only recommend it to every Steel Magnolia out there, but plan to see it again if it ever comes back to Raleigh!

    Steel Magnolias was just OK

by JudiL on 5/2/12Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

There wasn't the depth of character that I had been hoping to see. The one really moving character was Clairee. I got lost in her as a character, not an actress playing a character. I did not have that with the others as much. In order of feeling less like I was watching actresses in a play as much as watching people interacting with each other were Truvy, Annelle, M'Lynn, and lastly Ouiser, who I rarely saw as a person and mostly saw as an actress trying to portray a character.

    Steel Magnolias

by tellitlikeitis on 4/24/12Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

One of the best productions I've ever seen at NCT. The casting was outstanding; the timing was perfect; the humor just right; and the poignant moments were handled flawlessly. If you have a chance go see it -- You won't be disappointed !!!.

    Steel Magnolias was riveting

by Grammy62 on 4/23/12Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

I was very pleased with the performance of all the actresses in this play. With my eyes closed each of them could have passed for the actors in the movie. Very well done!

    Steel Magnolias well-played; seating disappointing

by Anonymous on 4/23/12Progress Energy Center Fletcher Opera Theater - Raleigh

The script for Steel Magnolias is amazing, but the performance is always determined by the actors. This cast did a phenomenol job! Any time a play can make you laugh, cry, and stay entertained the whole way through, it is a winner, and this one definitely fits the bill. My only complaint is the seating. Sitting in the second row near stage left, we had trouble seeing parts of the set, and also parts of the action. The stage was above eye level. Having paid a lot for these "best available" seats, that was a huge disappointment. The ticketers should price seats based on proximity AND view.

    Evita

by stu123 on 11/2/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - Raleigh

Performer quality was substandard. Che, as one of the lead characters, was poorly cast. He didn't have quite the range necessary and he ended up shouting much of his part. I was expecting to hear a high quality singing performance, not shouting. He also missed a line. Very disappointing, especially given his long resume in the program. Eva Peron was pretty good. The rest of the cast actually did fairly well. During the drive home I turned on the Broadway recording of Evita because I wanted to hear the musical, but left disappointed with the live performance. Would not recommend.

Did not enjoy the singing at all. It seemed more like shouting than singing.
