About

Many veteran bands trade on nostalgia, on replication of past glories, and on recycled emotions from younger, more carefree days.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band trades on a mix of reimagined classics and compelling newer works. The group formed in 1966 as a Long Beach, California jug band, scored its first charting single in 1967, and embarked on a self-propelled ride through folk, country, rock 'n' roll, pop, bluegrass, and the amalgam now known as "Americana." The first major hit came in 1971 with the epic "Mr. Bojangles," which, along with insistent support from banjo master Earl Scruggs, opened doors in Nashville. Behind those doors were Earl Scruggs, Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, Mother Maybelle Carter, Jimmy Martin, and others who would collaborate on a multi-artist, multi-generational, three-disc 1972 masterpiece: Will the Circle Be Unbroken went triple Platinum, spawned two later volumes, and wound up in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Was this a cutting-edge combo or a group of revivalists? Was the goal rebellion or musical piety? Yes, to all these things. In the 1980s, the Dirt Band reeled off 15 straight Top 10 country hits, including chart-toppers "Long Hard Road (The Sharecropper's Dream)," "Modern Day Romance," and "Fishin' in the Dark (co-written by Jim Photoglo, who would join the band in the second decade of the new century). 1989 brought a second Circle album, this one featuring singer-songwriter talents including John Prine, Rosanne Cash, and John Hiatt and garnering two Grammy awards for the band (it later won another, for a collaboration with Earl Scruggs and other fine folks). Circle II also won the Country Music Association's Album of the Year prize. Circle III was released in 2003, featuring collaborations with Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, and more.

Throughout the group's lifetime, personnel has changed, with each change resulting in positive steps forward, new ways of playing the old songs, and renewed enthusiasm for writing and recording fresh material. The latest Dirt Band lineup is expanded to six members for the first time since 1968. Today's group consists of founding member Jeff Hanna, harp master Jimmie Fadden (who joined in 1966), and soulful-voiced Bob Carpenter, who has more than 40 years of service in the ensemble. Those veterans are now joined by singer-songwriter-bass man Jim Photoglo, fiddle and mandolin wizard Ross Holmes, and Hanna's son, the preternaturally talented singer and guitarist Jaime Hanna.

Blood harmony, thrilling instrumental flights, undeniable stage chemistry...these things are part of each Dirt Band show, just as they are part of Dirt Does Dylan, the first recording from the reconfigured, six-strong group. Produced by Ray Kennedy and Jeff Hanna, it's a remarkable ride through some of the most impactful songs of the past century, penned by Bob Dylan and taken for a blue highway spin by a great American band, with help from genius-level contemporary artists like Jason Isbell and The War and Treaty.

A Dirt Band show is unlike any other. For legions of fans, it's less about the memories than the moment, crisp as an Autumn apple and rich as a royal flush.

    Great Band, Great Night

    by 7038601662 on 3/22/12Birchmere - Alexandria

After over 40 years of playing music this band is approaching perfection. Each member is a talented musician, and they have great songs both new and old. As a audience member I was happy to find that there were many "moments" on stage. I was especially pleased to see the sons of the original members join the band at this show, as a father myself I was touched to see the threads of family that seem to run through this band. I don't know any members of the band personally, but through sunday nights performance I got the sense that they are good people.

    Dirt Band better with age

by Tedper on 3/21/12Birchmere - Alexandria

I have seen the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band many times over the years starting in the 70s at the Bottom Line in NYC. They are GREAT musicians and it is apparent there joy for there art is only getting more intense. I had a suprise at The Birchmere last week when they played. John McEuen's two boys opened the show and then played with the band in the encore. The McEuen boys were fantastic. Overall a very HAPPY time. They keep me coming back.

    What Could Be Better???

by NoVAMusicMaven on 3/20/12Birchmere - Alexandria

My favorite venue and one of my all-time favorite bands - what's not to love about that? John McEuen's sons Nathan and Jonathan opened for NGDB and blew us all away. It was a great evening. Don't miss it the next time they're in town.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the Next Generation

by BanjoNC on 3/20/12Birchmere - Alexandria

The opening act, Jonathan and Nathan McEuen with help from dad John McEuen was excellent. The boys are great musicians and also can sing quite well. The main event was about the 30th time my husband and I have seen the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They were great, as usual. Lots of friendly banter between the members and great renditions of their hits and songs from other artists that they've covered through the years. Great keyboard, guitar, drums, harmonica, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle playing. The encore was extra good because the next generation, Jonathan and Nathan, were invited to join in. The tunes they played, "Circle" and "Take A Loan off Fannie" were great as usual, but a new element was added. with the extra guitars and vocals. All in all, an enjoyable evening.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - SWEET!!!!!

by dinkerpot on 1/31/12The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

Truly talented musicians, they are all very diversified!! Every one of the band members played at least 3 different instruments through out the concert. They are there to sing and entertain. They do not need to be flashy and jump around like monkies.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was Awesome!!

by MI57 on 1/30/12The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

The performance by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was awesome. We've already purchased their newest CD, Speed of Life. And I must say. --- I like their version of The Broken Road better than Rascal Flatts' version. We'll be watching for future concerts in our area.

    by SAB87 on 1/29/12Casino Rama - Rama

The energy of the band was amazing! They were so down to earth! I couldn't believe how much they sounded like their albums ....never missed a beat! As a 24 year old who may never get a chance to see this unforgettable band again, it was an experience I would never trade for anything!

    Wonderful concert

by 69ers on 10/18/11Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - Gainesville

The musicians were each extremely talented. There were many songs which we recognized. We both liked that there were so many upbeat selections. The length of the performance was very satisfactory and not too long. The comments between songs was OK, but not especially entertaining.

Loved the performance, think the PAC sound quality could have been better, was so loud it was a little hard to understand the words and hear the detailed instrumentation.

NGDB still awesome after 45 years

by Only1T on 8/22/11CAPRI CTR EXHIBITION HALL - Red Deer

Once again NGDB shows their talent and their love of playing music for an audience. Even though the event was poorly planned (seating arrangement and entry into the hall) this did not deter from enjoying their awesome music. I would recommend them anytime.

the lack of and too much......bass

by tomcatbill on 9/7/10Duquoin State Fair - Duquoin

This is the second time I've seen NGDB in the last few years. Both times the band was great, harmonies are tight, the pickin' is superb. But whatever they do to produce bass is awful. I think it's done by the keyboard player, but what ever it is is waaaaaay too loud and more anoying than enjoyable. I will admit the sound got better as the gig went on, it was terribly loud at the start and just sounded like a huge thumping instead of bass. Is a bass player THAT hard to find guys? This is the 3rd or 4th band I've heard do this and everytime it sounds like crap. Sorry, but it darn near ruined the gig for me, otherwise, it's hard to believe they can still play with that kind of fire and feeling after 40 some years. I'd still recommend seeing them, it's a really good show.

NGDB put on an excellent show. They were interactive, energetic and full of laughs. They played most of their hits. The theatre was awesome.
