    Nice surprise.

by luvdafillmore on 2/17/14The Fillmore - San Francisco

I saw the name "Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers" working the local SF scene recently. I'm alway looking for a refreshing sound for 'date night' with my wife. They were coming to the Fillmore after the holidays; my favorite venue. With a new CD released, I went to their website and, after a sample listen, I bought both CD and Fillmore tickets. What a nice surprise. Soulful hippie-chick sound meets laudable songwriting and outstanding musicianship. We had a great time. The vibe was perfect. The songs were infectious. The entire band was 'spot-on' talented. I recommend catching these guys...especially at the Fillmore.

The Gramblers: Bowery Ballroom 14 Feb 2014

by RHGirl57 on 2/17/14Bowery Ballroom - New York

Another Valentine’s Day and, once again, rtb is my date for the evening. This time at one of our favorite clubs, where Kenny the sound guy treats us like VIPs. We got a table at the Bowery Ballroom and even a few drinks in addition to a fun conversation with Kenny. Our reason for being there was Joe Pug. We had seen him open there for Justin Townes Earle and have been following him ever since. He is a singer/songwriter in the Woody Guthrie tradition with songs that use politics and his life to tell the story. He started solo on the acoustic for one song and then Matt Schuster (upright bass) and Greg Tuohey (electric and acoustic guitar) joined him. Pug is great solo but Schuster and Tuohey add incredible beauty to the songs. Tom (don’t remember last name) joined them on the keyboards for one or two songs. Pug played with the melodies of the more familiar songs a very little bit – he didn’t do a Dylan where the song is unrecognizable – the changes were subtle yet enough to make the songs new. Pug played one cover – Harvey Thomas Young’s “Deep Dark Wells.” I never heard the original but Pug’s cover is gorgeous. Since it was short set there wasn’t a lot of talking but he did tell a story of his father driving from DC to Charlottesville in a snowstorm to see Pug perform and his father’s car got stuck and he had to hitchhike with Pasha, the nicest Iranian guy he ever met. We did hear “Hymn #101” “I Do My Father’s Drugs” “Nation of Heat” “The Great Despiser” among other favorites. The first thing that both of us noticed was Pug’s hair. It was longer and very curly. There was something off about the haircut. Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers were new to me. rtb said she’d checked them out on YouTube and they looked like fun and Kenny described them the same way. At first sound they leaned towards country but it’s mostly a mix of pop and folk. Bluhm has a tremendously powerful voice – something I always admire – and if she didn’t have the band behind her she could have done the entire show without a mic. Bluhm was another one that you notice the hair first; she had Farrah Fawcett hair. She was also wearing a red peasant blouse and designer jeans with boots – the look was so 70s that I was having flashbacks. I was also sure that there was something romantic going on between Bluhm and one of The Gramblers even though they never touched. Later when they did a duet she mentioned how they rarely get to have dinner dates together, so I discovered I was correct. Tim Bluhm plays keyboards, organ, guitar, and sings back-up, Deren Ney plays lead guitar, Steve Adams plays bass, Dave Mulligan is on rhythm guitar, and Mike Curry plays drums. The band is fun. They play originals and covers. The covers that night were “Hey! Baby,” where the audience surprised me, and I think maybe the band, by singing the “hu ha,” and “Somebody to Love,” which was a perfect fit for Bluhm. Standouts for me on the originals were “Squeaky Wheel” “Little Too Late” and “Kill You to Call.”

parts were great, most were average

by disappointedinnickibluhm on 1/28/14The Fillmore - San Francisco

i love nick bluhm and the gramblers' van sessions. however, she covered very little music which i think is a clear strength even though i normally don't like to see musicians playing a lot of covers. she did one cover. i liked the duets with her husband which were very june and johnny cash-esque but the rest of the show was average by far.

What a perfect combination, Nicki, raised in Lafayette and performing at the old Town Hall Theatre of Lafayette. Great music, along with great memories of a fabulous place to grow up in. Nicki and The Gramblers played to sell out crowd and everyone left smiling brighter. A holiday must see. Can't wait until next year.

    A little different but amazing

by aroundsound on 12/25/13Town Hall Theatre - Lafayette

This was an acoustic show attended by all ages, toddler through great grandma. Nicki's voice is sublime and the acoustic format really highlighted that, along with the harmonies. The Gramblers are simply a great band in any format and this intimate setting is a treasure.

    Rising Star

by movieguy1919 on 9/26/13House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

Nicki Bluhm hit the stage in her signature tight Jordache jeans, along with cream boots and a surprisingly playful black sequin top, and her magnetism immediately took over. Her bangs draped down over her eyes as she graced the room with her sultry-smooth and lightly dusky vocals as the band laid down the music that would be the runway for the night. Throughout the evening, from song to song, Nicki and the boys grabbed the crowd with harmony and honest lyrics and a style reminiscent of years past in their "California Vibe". The bay area-based band rolled out tracks from their new album, as well as some NB&G standards, and even tossed in a couple of sultry covers of "Take Another Piece of My Heart" and "Fever". Fans were thrilled by Nicki's ability to practically channel Linda Ronstadt, Janis Joplin and even Rickie Lee Jones and transcend those sounds into a current and relevant brand of "feel good" music. Already known from their YouTube "Van Sessions" videos, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers are on the rise and ready to take the music scene by storm with their honest, genuine sound. I see big things in their future and recommend them to anyone who appreciates quality music and entertainment.

    Nicki Bluhm, catch her live!

by BlueStreak10 on 4/1/13Bowery Ballroom - New York

Nicki Bluhn and the Gramblers put on a must see live show. As the lead singer Nicki has that certain something that comes around once in a generation. She has a naturally beautiful voice and her live performances outshine her studio work, which itself is quite excellent. She gives it all on stage, I am sure that the spirit of Janis was looking down and smiling as Nicki performed in the Village N.Y.C. The Gramblers are exceptionally talented group of musicians. Catch them on tour before the word gets out.

    The best

by aroundsound on 3/29/13Bowery Ballroom - New York

This band just gets better and better. Nicki is amazing, band is tight, original songs are killer but a few covers add impact too. The music can't be beat and they've grown into a must see act. The records are great but you really have to see them work live.

    Nickie Bluhm is Exquisite

by Kash62 on 3/29/13Bowery Ballroom - New York

The first time I heard of Nickie Bluhm and the Gramblers was literally 2 weeks ago when I heard Little Too Late to Die Young on satellite radio and immediately knew I came upon something special, like a young Bonnie Raitt. I immediately began to research her work and fell in love with her sound. Every song is immediately familiar, giving you the feeling that you've been listening to her music for years. The 4-part harmonies between her, her husband Tim, and the other members of the band are perfectly blended. The dynamics of the group on-stage are captivating, and Nickie's stage presence is reminiscent of a Grace Slick, Linda Ronstadt or Janis Joplin in their prime. I HIGHLY recommend seeing this band in a small venue while you still can, because if they continue on the path that they're on, this group is bound for greatness.

by NaniLea on 6/21/12Rickshaw Stop - San Francisco

Nicki was AMAZING- she's sassy, she's hip, she's cool, she writes really great songs and has a bad ass band backIng her up. She gives it her all in every song... Sings her heart out like it's the only show she's got. It's passion. Not to mention her husband is her biggest fan and he's in the band just making the whole experience one big love story. They put on a really awesome show. It rocked! I would definitely go back and recommend it to anyone looking to have a great time!

by Anonymous on 6/21/12Rickshaw Stop - San Francisco

I was fortunate enough to catch Nicki Bluhm's last residency show at the Rickshaw stop in San Francisco on 6/19/12. She and her band the Gramblers are fantastic and one of the best acts today that you can catch in an intimate venue. If you get the chance I highly recommend seeing them.
