About

Founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1983, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are one of the most critically acclaimed post-punk bands of the last 30 years. Following the end of their previous group, the Birthday Party, singer-songwriter Cave and drummer Mick Harvey began the Bad Seeds. Initially joined by Barry Adamson on bass and Blixa Bargeld on guitar, the band has seen a number of personnel changes over the years with the one constant being the creative force of Cave himself.
Exploring the themes of love and religion, the band’s debut album, From Her to Eternity, was released in 1984. Featuring a cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “In the Ghetto,” presented in the band’s inimitable style, the record showcased the deep impact of Cave’s baritone voice. Quickly following second album, The Firstborn is Dead, third release Kicking Against the Pricks saw the band first find fame in the UK and Ireland. Critics also began to sit up and take notice, with Cave’s prose-like approach to songwriting bringing welcome comparisons with Leonard Cohen. This narrative style was seen again on 1986’s Your Funeral…My Trial, before the beginning of a two year break from recording for the band.
Four more albums were released in the early ‘90s in addition to the band making a range of high-profile US festival appearances. The album Murder Ballads, released in 1996, became a critical success for the Bad Seeds and saw songwriter Cave explore two of his favorite themes: death and violence. The album featured vocals from Kylie Minogue on the single, “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” and the success of the song helped make Murder Ballads the band’s best -selling album so far. 1998 saw the release of No More Shall We Part, with further albums Nocturama and Abbatoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus being released in the early ‘00s.
Following a number of sell out tour dates in 2005 and 2006, Nick Cave’s musical achievements and creative contribution saw him inducted into Australia’s ARIA Hall of Fame. Not for the first time in his career, Cave then moved from music to movies, writing both the screenplay and soundtrack for John Hillcoat’s 2012 film, Lawless. Early 2013 saw the release of Push the Sky Away; the band’s first output in nearly five years, it was widely acclaimed by fans and critics alike.

    A Church Service

by Clemantha on 8/25/17Kings Theatre - Brooklyn

A bit of the old spunk alchemized with the new agony. A quiet duende. More powerful than can be described. Great news when only the moment can speak...

My best friend and I drove up to Asheville, North Carolina to see Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. I'm a pretty massive fan and was super excited because I've never had the opportunity to see him life. The venue was simple and easy to find and the seats we got were pretty good. The sound quality was impeccable and I wish I could go back in time and relive it.

    Nick Cave at his Finest...

by CapnSweaty on 7/6/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

The set was well thought out and carefully selected, representing The Bad Seeds' entire catalog. And while it took a song or two for Nick to warm up and settle in on Berkeley's massive Greek Theatre stage, it quickly became clear that this was a new and more intimate show than any others performed by The Bad Seeds in the past.

Beautiful lyrics, phenomenal perfomance, charisma galore. NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS never disappoint. They connect with the audience in ways that other performers do not dare. My recommendation? Get to one of their concerts by any means necessary.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds put on an amazing show at the Berkeley Greek. They played the favorites (Red Right Hand, of course), as well as a lot off the new album which is just amazing. Cave came into the audience several times and even invited some audience members on stage with him and the band for the encore. He didn't talk much between songs, but when he did, he was hilarious! He has a magnetic stage presence, he is in good voice, and the Seeds are so tight musically, it is a joy to watch them. After two hours, I still didn't want the concert to end. I would see Nick Cave again anytime and hope he and the Seeds continue to tour for as long as they enjoy it as much as we do!

by Isheahgogo on 6/29/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

First and foremost the sound was wonderful as a musician myself I hate when bands are mixed poorly or play out of tune. The Bad Seeds sounded great, Nick sounded great. I believed in the emotion. Second thing, what fabulous showmanship great build up until the end. A true escape! a real show! Thanks Gentleman.

Roll over Jim Morrison Iggy Pop, step back I have never seen any entertainer hold an audience in the palm of his hand with such aplomb.

    Great show but

by ausrussell on 6/29/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Brilliant mix of old and new... His intimacy with the audience was edgily lovely. I even loved the virtual presence of the Else Torp. Loses two stars because he plans to break the Palestinian call to boycott Israel. Like Thom York, he thinks he knows better.

    Nick and the Seeds...I'm speechless!

by Anonymous on 6/29/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Ok so, I have been a Nick Cave fan since mid 1980's. I have seen him live quite a few times as well. I have today that he was in top form at the Greek in Berkeley on June 24. This man has lived a very full life and has experience a tragedy that no one should ever experience. Somehow his personal growth through this devastation seemed to reverberate throughout the evening. The new songs were heartfelt and moving. There was nothing overworked about his performance. The freshness of the sentiment was palpable and his emotional cracks were here for all to share. The oldies were somehow fresher as well, as though a newfound life force was guiding the lyrics and music. The Bad Seeds were spot on as ever an all the nuances that the performance created were tight with a capital T. The audience was empathetic and grateful as several standing ovations proved. No performer in my mind has aged as gracefully as this man while still maintaining the ultimate 'cool'! I would see every show on this tour if I could!

Nick Cave is admittedly and acquired taste for most, but if you should have even the slightest curiosity about him or his music, put him and the Bad Seeds on your short list of MUST SEE LIVE!!! Powerful and spellbinding.

    Amazing Nick Cave!!

by volenessa on 6/29/17Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

I was afraid Nick Cave's last album wouldn't be very stage-compatible, but this concert was absolutely fantastic: Nick Cave and his band had so much energy to give that I was mesmerized from the very beginning to the very end of the concert! Even several days after the concert, I still have powerful images and songs haunting me. Nick Cave is the most genuine rock composer and singer I have ever seen...

by Diglicious on 6/29/17San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Nick Cave is one of the best live performers on the concert circuit today. He has great material and performs with a lot of passion. All of that was on display at this show. I've seen him five times now with no regrets or disappointments.
