About

For the first time in League history, the National Hockey League (NHL) will host outdoor hockey in Florida. Celebrating the explosive growth of hockey in Florida over the last three decades, the League will stage two outdoor games in the Sunshine State during the 2025-26 season starting with the 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic featuring the Florida Panthers hosting the New York Rangers at loanDepot park, on Jan. 2, 2026.

The 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic will mark the first-ever NHL regular-season outdoor game for the Panthers and the sixth for the Rangers, who hold an NHL-best 5-0-0 record in outdoor games. The NHL Winter Classic continues the tradition the League established in 2008 of hosting a regular-season outdoor game at the onset of the new year, with the 2026 edition marking the 17th NHL Winter Classic.

  • Fun event and venue

    by MIK0664 on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The event was extremely fun. I enjoyed having the opportunity to see a different community and cheer on my home team. The cotton bowl stadium was perfect size and very accommodating.

  • Once in a lifetime experience!

by StarsGirl on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The 2020 NHL Winter Classic was magical! As a native of the Dallas area, I grew up understanding that the Cotton Bowl and football were synonymous and rich with history. If someone had told me, as a kid in the 80s, that a HOCKEY game would be played there I would not have believed it. The weather was perfect. The crowd was electric. I am so grateful to experience this moment of history!

  • Poor crowd planning

by ChefMom on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 2 out of 5

With 85,600 people at the fair grounds you would have thought that they would have planned better. At times you couldn’t even walk through the midway because everyone was so crammed together. Food lines were SO long and if you were lucky enough to get food before they ran out you might have been able to catch a few minutes of the game. There were no signs for anything. The sponsor booths had just as long of lines and the people working them didn’t seem to care.

  • Great outdoor game in Dallas

    by G on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

First time attending any type of outdoor games and it was wonderful. I liked how the Texas State Fairgrounds were open. The game itself was great and (while somewhat gimmicky) I liked how they incorporated thinks that are associated with Texas during the TV timeouts and intermissions. The only complaint would be how crowded it was to walk around the fairgrounds. You could barely walk and there really no event staff worker around to better control the flow of traffic (you would take maybe two or three steps and then be standing for 5-8 minutes before you were able to take additional steps). Still, a great event and game.

  • Excellent experience

by Martin on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The 2020 Winter Classic was by far the most exciting sporting event I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending. The atmosphere was electric, rival fans were ribbed but not accosted, and the NHL and city of Dallas poured a lot into the experience. The only true drawback was the confusion outside the Cotton Bowl with the numerous lines and crowds inside the midway area. I also wasn’t a fan of the country music theme, but I understand that the rest of the world associates Texas with nothing but country....

  • Unbelievable

by Dirk on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Second largest attendance for a NHL game ever. Easy parking, great coordination, and fantastic hockey!!

  • Great Game and Fan Experience below expectations

by Bill on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

The venue, game presentation and game were fabulous. The pre event Fan Experience was way below expectations. Insufficient food vendors and activities too crowded. The most disappointing thing was the merchandise. Too few trailers, not enough sales associates, and poor payment system. The NHL could sell 2-3 more in volume of merchandise if they made it less time consuming and easier to purchase.

Great event. Well planned out. Great game, great entertainment, great atmosphere. Grew up playing ice hockey in DFW. Amazing to see how the game has grown here from the 70”s to Ta day. Played a lot of games in half empty fair park barn right next door.

  • Great experience but don't go hungry

by Ntx on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Took family just over to get food. Ridiculous! Now time to leave...oh my. Once you exited the Bowl you were directed to swarm through the Midway. Thank goodness there was not an emergency. The game experience was fantastic.

  • Awesome Game, Poor Location and Planning

by IndianaGirlLovestheStars on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Took the train to Fair Park, very convenient. No issues getting through ticketing and security. Only a small section of the Midway was open. Not even close to being enough space for 85k+ people. Extremely long lines for food and drink. Inside the Cotton Bowl wasn’t any better. Took us over an hour just to get through the one open stadium gate. Once inside, took us another 20 minutes to get to our seat, almost missed puck drop. Game itself was absolutely incredible! Entertainment was great! Game was exciting and the Stars won! Getting out of the stadium was okay but getting out of Fair Park was terrible. Thank goodness the city brought extra buses since the train lines were ridiculous. Dallas has a lot of great venues. I wish a different one was selected. Great idea about having the fairgrounds open but extremely poor execution. Great fans from both teams because given the long waits, lack of food/drink, and wall to wall people, it could have gotten really bad, but it didn’t. Kudos to the fans!

  • Awesome Experience

by Lori on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was great. The entertainment provided was entertaining and the game was awesome. The only issue I saw was the venue ran out of food and beer. Travel leaving via the Dart was a little long as well. Even with this the experience was awesome and I would definitely do it again!

  • Best Ever Hockey Game

    by C. W. on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

This was such a fun event! It was a true Hockey meet Texas experience from the awesome game to the funny, weird, sideline events and Dan & Shay were a great! The extra midway attractions were an add even though very challenging and irritating to get anywhere. Best part is we won!! GO STARS!!!

  • Winter Classic

by Phred on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

We had a great time and loved the experience. With that said, we thought it seemed like the venue was not prepared for the 85,000 plus people. All the staff were very nice but they were put in situations that they had no control over. For example, the gentleman who by himself had to close off the Stanley Cup line by himself and explain to people who had waited 2 plus hours that they would not get a photo. There had to be anticipation of very long lines but the venue did not seem to anticipate how to handle the flow of people while they were in line for the different activities, food and bathrooms. For example, Lots of confusion amongst a small area with a food stop, the Stanley Cup, carnival games and autograph signing. It was crazy and confusing.

  • Most unique event I’ve ever experienced

by StarsFan Tim on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

From the state fair feel when you entered to the rodeo and western themed event inside the Cotton Bowl its a game I won’t soon forget.

  • Outdoor hockey

by Stars cowboy on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Leading up to game lots of info sent regarding how to get there and what to do with apps to download. Public transportation was packed to the seams and phone apps were useless since you couldn't get a signal. But the game was exciting and worth all the frustration of long lines and overcrowding outside the stadium.

  • bucket list ✔️

    by Sarah G on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

This was definitely a trip of a lifetime. Couldn’t imagine a better way to spend New Years Day than outside in 50 degree weather watching hockey. That being said, i feel obligated to point out the obvious cons. The concession/Merch lines were atrocious...we missed the majority of a period just waiting for nachos and that was THE SHORTEST LINE. There should have been people walking the stands with beer and at least popcorn or peanuts. The bottleneck to get into the midway and stadium was annoying. Having food line running across the direction of midway traffic (especially right at the entrance gate) was annoying. Other than that, we had a blast and the cotton bowl/fairgrounds was the perfect setting!

  • Awesome event

Great time and amazing experience. I just hope there will be more Winter Classic here in North Texas in the future!

  • Best, most unique sporting event ever

by Stephen on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

The NHL and Dallas Stars knocked it out of the park! The 2020 Winter Classic was the best sporting event I have ever attended, and was so incredibly unique, with all the pageantry surrounding the game. Even extremely long lines at restrooms, concessions, and merchandise can't drop this review below 5 stars... the event itself was that good

  • Winter Classic 2020

    by R. on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 4 out of 5

Overall, this was the best day of my life. The presentation was amazing, and the game was even better. I think they did a very nice job of hosting the winter classic considering it was their first time. The only negative thing I saw was how poorly they prepared the fairgrounds for such a large amount of people. I don’t know if they realized how many people would actually be in one spot at one time. Walking through Midway was a nightmare. It was almost worse than driving in downtown during rush hour. They definitely could’ve cleared out more walking space to accommodate how large the crowd would be. Other than that, I was very pleased with the day. Definitely a day to remember!

  • Good Time, Too Hokey

    by J. on 1/4/20Cotton Bowl - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

Enough with the country music and redneck stuff. We get it, we’re in Texas, you didn’t have to shove it down our throats. Game was great, cool setup but I didn’t need to feel like I was at the circus, that’s not hockey.
