New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

  • Great Night...Really good seats

by PatrickC on 4/10/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Went to a hockey game for the first time in NY. Communication from Ticket Master was good, the event felt safe even though was really packed. The Madison Square Garden venue isnt that big so any seat in the bottom section is plenty close enough to the action. The tickets were not cheap but overall well worth it.

Fans are treated like #1 at MSG. great experience. Rangers with the shootout win made it an amazing night. Drove 11 hours to go watch the game. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Excellent seats, great game, wish the prices were a bit lower for the tickets and concessions at the arena.

  • Fun, great atmosphere

by Chris T. on 3/23/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Great time at a recent Rangers game at MSG...easy access, clearly marked path to the different seating sections, great gift shop, fantastic transit connections...sell-out crowd, awesome atmosphere...only downside was sitting up in the 200s sections, the Garden has constructed sort of a hanging seating platform which completely obscures the scoreboard and the other side of the arena, so that it felt you were sitting in a closet or something rather than being part of a huge, enthusiastic crowd. The Garden won't take that seating area down now, I'm sure, but just be aware, if you buy seats in the 200 sections--not behind the goals, maybe, but along the length of the rink...you won't see the scoreboard (though they have put up small TV monitors to compensate for this) or the rest of the arena.

  • Love the Rangers!

  • Rangers game

by Rodsolid on 3/21/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoyed Madison Square Garden, however, never compares to the great Boston Garden. The Bruins are clearly the best team in the league🏅⚡️💫 The Rangers are OK

  • Not "premium"at all

by Jon on 3/21/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

Tickets had obstructed view and couldn't see 1/4 of the ice (including one goal net) from "premium"standing room only seats. Horrible experience for a premium price. Why did I spend $200/ticket for a regular season game and have to stand the whole time? Ushers wouldn't let anyone sit in empty seats and were very strict on enforcement. Everyone was miserable.

  • Awesome experience and great game

by Steve on 3/14/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Had an almost perfect experience at the garden. Seats were great and the game was excellent. Crew were awesome and made for a pleasant experience. The only negatives for me were that in the 400 section there weren’t any cup holders for our drinks. Also, the men’s room near section 415 isn’t big enough. The line was super long and there was only one stall and one urinal. Even with these few minor negatives, I will definitely be back in the future for another rangers game.

  • I love the Rangers

by Debbie on 3/13/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I had a slight problem getting my ticket to appear on my phone, but the Ticketmaster agent helped me. It worked perfectly at MSG. The MSG staff members were all friendly and helpful. The Rangers won the game, and an extra highlight was that I met John Brancy, the national anthem singer!
