New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

  • Great Night at MSG with the Rangers

by LM on 3/7/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

MSG certainly knows how to put on a show. We attended the Rangers game against the Panthers and the atmosphere was electric in building. They game was amazing to watch between two top teams in the league, the music, the light show, the celebrities, and the contests they run during the game make it a very interactive fun experience for everyone and the family. We loved the whole experience and look forward to attend future games at MSG.

  • Noise, noise, noise

by LAX Tom on 3/7/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

Rangers game experience will always be mid as long as they insist on bombarding our eardrums with ridiculously loud "music"during every break in the action. It's annoying and totally unnecessary. The noise they make trying to encourage the crowd to "make some noise"is so loud you can't even hear the crowd, so what even is the point? Has anyone ever complained because the music at the hockey game they attended wasn't loud enough? Why does every hockey venue do this?

  • Awesome to see NHL as its best

by Stu on 3/7/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I'm from Finland and it has been a long time dream of my to see NHL live. What better way to do it than in MSG. I did sit next to awesome Rangers fans (we had nice moments and talks) and I saw fellow country men both in a rink and stand. Night to remember...

Went to the Ranger game versus Dallas. Took my son and we had a blast, mainly due to Ranger win but we did walk around the 200 level to view memorabilia. Great time had.

  • Awesome experience

by Paul on 2/23/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

First time watching ice hockey in the USA and do not regret it. What a show. Sublime. Nice ambiance.

  • Great time at the garden!

by AD on 2/22/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

It’s always a great time at the garden! The atmosphere is electric! The only downside is everything has gotten too expensive! I used to be able to get a ticket for $125 and now I’m looking at almost double. The pricing is getting a bit too ridiculous.

  • There is more show in the arena than on the ice.

by Saurel on 2/19/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

The average playing time is less than a minute, and between each stop, the music blares, people dance, there's even a DJ now, and the ice-cleaners arrive, and the game finally starts again and stops again after 45 seconds, and here we go again, the music blares, people dance... I feel more and more like I'm in a nightclub instead of at a sporting event.

First ever hockey game, really loved the fun around the intervals, made for a really good experience. However we only bought 1 drink each as it was far too expensive then really wanted to get a hoodie but @ $120, this is way out of line with UK Football merchandise Staff were amazing, venue fantastic, transport links really easy

  • Fabulous Hockey Game at MSG

by Amberley Kent on 2/15/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was my third visit to Madison Square Garden to watch a sporting event while in New York and the experience has been great every time. The layout of the seating is excellent, which means you get a great view of the action wherever you are in the arena and really feel you are part of the event. The organisation and crowd marshalling is first class and there are plenty plenty of facilities for all inside, from the merchandise stores to the food and drink outlets. Great game of hockey to top it all off, with a 2-0 win for NY. Can’t wait to visit NYC again to take in more hockey at MSG
