New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

  • Good seats, terrible performance

by Justin on 11/10/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

Rangers blew it from the start. First goal in 30 seconds and it didn’t end there.

  • Afternoon MSG

by ML78 on 11/7/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Had a good experience at the Garden. Had a great seat, closer to ice than I usually get. Nice, I never had to get up or sit down, because some seats were empty. Great view of both goals. Scanning ticket off my phone easy.

  • Always a good time at the Garden

by Rich on 11/6/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

We had a great time watching the Rangers vs the Islanders. The game was good but I would have liked a bit more variety in the dining options, specifically a vegetarian option. Also, the music between periods was too loud.

  • Great time

We went to see the Rangers/Islanders game on Nov 3. Easy to find our seats, clean venue, and great fans around us! Would definitely recommend seeing the Rangers here.

  • Awesome team. Pricey Tickets

by Eric on 9/12/24Rating: 5 out of 5

Love the team and Ilove going to the Garden but the tickets are getting out of hand with how much they are. Its almost impossible to even go to one game a year anymore.

  • Complete letdown

by Chris on 6/2/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

This team played with no heart. I've been saying it for months the five on five sucked for the entire season. We got as far as we did relying on special teams and luck neither one of those are going to win you a cup.

  • Hockey in MSG was AMAZING

by Hokie Ranger Fans on 6/1/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Was our 9 year-old son’s first trip to NYC (for a week from Wed. to Wed.) & we packed in everything that we could to make sure we saw it all. Was let down by the Knicks missing the playoffs, but then saw the Rangers were in conference finals and IMMEDIATELY bought some tix in section 212. The crowd and atmosphere was ELECTRIC, the food & merch were a PLENTY, and search and ticket lines weren’t delayed at all. PERFECT family atmosphere (besides the usual & anticipated NYC F-bombs…(c; ) for our first pro game at the historic Madison Square Gardens!!

  • Me and my family had a great time at the game

  • Too bad the team forgot to show ipn

by Luv the Rangers on 5/25/24Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

For the outrageous ticket price of 10.50 a minute it was a huge disappointment. The national anthem was the highlight by far. Ranger fans deserve better.
