New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

  • What a great venue to see a sporting event

    by D. R. on 6/5/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Your staff is great. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. MSG is also kept very clean. The one thing I notice about MSG is that there are not many drunk obnoxious fans.

  • Dreaming of the cup

The kids are winning, the vets are backing them up. Key is becoming a mini Troubs. Bread is looking alive again. The Dream On pre show is pretty darn awesome! The NY Rangers are pleasing there loyal fans beyond and above expectations! The Prime Rib is the best meal in da MSG House! But the energy and the buzz in the building are unlike anything I’ve ever experienced!

by Joe on 6/4/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Everything just seemed to line up so perfectly. A spontaneous decision to buy the tickets. Brought us to the train right on time and got us to the garden just in time for the pre game rituals. The garden was electric. Unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. I would love to do it again. LETS GO RANGERS!

  • Pricing Keeps Real Fans Away

    by T. C. on 5/24/22Rating: 4 out of 5

Nothing better than going to see the broadway blueshirts in action at the world's most famous arena! It's such a shame that price gouging keeps fans who live and die by their team out of the building, it's like having to take a second mortgage out to go cheer them on. And that's not even getting into food and drink prices...

  • Surreal Event Experiencing Game 7 in OT @MSG

by Gio on 5/20/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Hearing the crowd in unison chanting LET'S GO RANGERS as the opera bariton singer sang the national anthem, and then each score during the game, only intensified the crowd! Then it goes into OverTime, and hearing the crowd, it was like the sound of a violent death-cage match between 2 MMA fighters. And when they scored in OT to end the series, it was like an explosion of joy at maximum decibels! It was a visceral experience and it was worth every penny of the $1,000 I paid for this ticket behind the opponent's net along with the sold out crowd of 18k rabid NY Ranger fans! On to Round 2 of the NHL Playoffs and bring on the Carolina Hurricanes! LET'S GO RANGERS!!

  • Great Game! Great Crowd!

by Ron G on 5/15/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I Bleed Blue so it was obviously a great win for the Rangers heading to Pittsburgh for Game 6. they were great seats & loved the electricity of the Garden. Dont mind paying Ticketmester the high cost of the seats but HATED paying extra processing fee's for getting the tickets on my phone. Other apps out there that dont charge ANY fee's. Ill use them in the future. LGR
