New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

My children have attended 6:30 AM ice time with NY Rangers alumni. We all attended events in 2015. My children renewed their appreciation for hockey. They loved waving the towels and the hometown energy. Of only we scored more goals or blocked all the competitpr goals.

This was a fun family event fir any fan to be able to be a part of the playoff magic at a reasonable cost. My family had a great time and felt like we were at the game watching it on the jumbo trons. The fan vibes were a lot of fun even though our outcome didn’t turn out the way i wanted I would recommend doing it again

  • Ranger Watch Party

by JayVee on 6/14/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great thing the Rangers opening the Garden to watch the game on the screen . $10 bucks can't beat that. We were hoping for a Ranger win but...at least it was fun

by blondie on 6/14/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed the experience, it was better than the out door set up they had years ago. The viewing party made it very similar to bri gvti the game live.

  • Excellent despite the outcome

by Jeannine Marie on 6/14/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The MSG should be as interactive as they were this day the during the regular season. The garden was loud and proud. The music and light show was good also.

  • Great

by Nicholas on 6/14/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Great game for a great price. Keep doing more tickets like this to sport games then I will keep going. When prices are 60-100 then I will not go since I think it is too high.

  • Amazing

by Amanda on 6/14/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Even though they sadly lost, it was such a fun time and everything you’d experience in a regular game. I would 100% do it again!

  • Rangers viewing party

by Sottile2 on 6/14/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

It was good, unfortunately the video and the sound were off. When a goal was scored you heard it about 3-5 seconds before we actually saw it on the screen which was very upsetting. The cotton candy around the stadium was old too. Other than the it was very fun

  • ranger fans rock!

by SK63 on 6/14/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

the place was lit up....the fans were passionate and loud! When players, both home and away, say the MSG fans factor into the game, its definitely a home ice advantage!

  • Rangers Game 6 Viewing Party

by Jay on 6/12/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Everything was awesome except for the final result and that the Jumbotron and The game announcers voices were not synchronized. Announcer screaming “goal” before the shot was even taken. Could’ve done a better job than that. Also, the game didn’t start showing until after the puck drop. Three periods and we did not see one face off at the beginning of the period.

  • Rangers Game 2

by Athom on 6/6/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5
