New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

  • Gouged

by Biff on 5/15/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

Ticket price was great for a Ranger playoff game… but $30 in fees is an insult and total gouging. I wish there was a less greed-filled way to buy a ticket!

  • Best arena in hockey

  • Great arena, good hockey but poor atmospere

by Bostjan on 5/10/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Modern arena with top notch amenities. Great hockey (I visited the Rangers game agains Carolina). But being used to European sports events the whole experience was somewhat anticlimactic on account of poor atmosphere - hardly any cheering or booing for that matter. Everything else was great.

  • The worst arena in the world

The building personnel are the worst in business . Building is run like a horse and buggy in the digital world. Access to building is the most confusing the people who work there are all rude and unhelpful it feel like we should be grateful to be allowed in . Just a joke. The worst building in america

  • Good vibe

by Huddy on 5/2/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I went in to the game not expecting a lot and was very pleased with the entry into the arena it was fast and simple. Our seats were very good for the price and it was a good game which helps the vibe. The crowd was really into it the stereo in there is one of the best I have heard tons of bass and not to loud sounded great. Overall a great experience the only negative I saw was that the upper deck was packed and then there were a lot of seats open down low at ice level it just kinda kills the mojo of the rink when it is like that.

  • NY Rangers season finale.

by Jrhat on 5/2/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The Rangers finished the regular season with a big win against Washington. Loved my seats. It would be nice if Madison Square Garden provided Wi-Fi on the “Bridge Level

  • Biggest waste of money!

by KL on 4/30/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

I bought tickets as a Christmas gift for my family to see the rangers play in MSG, they were very expensive because it was December 22nd in NYC. 3 of my 6 children live across the country and we’re flying home for Christmas, 1 is in the military. The game was postponed because we were playing a Canadian team and Canada closed its border due to the Covid variant. I asked for a refund but was denied. I asked over and over again explaining that now the people the tickets were for would not be in NY. It took months for them to reschedule the game, when they finally did it was April 27th. The game was meaningless, not a single starter played, and the arena was empty. I payed soooo much for those tickets because it was a game right before Christmas in NYC. I couldn’t even give the tickets away as my family could not go. If you cancel or even postpone a game, you should give people a choice if they want their money back or not. Will never buy from you again.

The match was excited, but to get the tickets from e-mail to our European phones was terrible!!! It lasted about 45 minutes for a US person to get them into my phone . Very bad system of getting tickets !!!

  • RANGERS ROCK

by Ilovenewyork on 4/22/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

It was great to go to a game at the garden after the last couple of years of the pandemic! Loved it! New York does it best with its' energy, style and enthusiasm! No where like it in the world. Was one of the minority in a mask and a bit concerned the event such as a sold out game could be more than a super spreader as we are entering higher covid etc. rates...

  • A great time!

by Fritz on 4/22/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I bought tickets for my daughter's birthday. She is a Rangers fan but never went to a live game, so we decided on going to the Rangers vs. Jets on April 19th. The whole experience was fun. First of all, the Rangers won so that made us happy. We had great seats in section 107, so our view was awesome. The entertainment in-between periods were fun too with air cannons shooting t-shirts into the crowd or coupons for Dunkin donuts falling from above. We were also surprised at how clean the rest rooms were. The attendants did a great job considering the sheer volume of people using them. Food and drinks are expensive, but you have to know that going into any major venue. We wish we could go to the playoffs now!!! Go Rangers!!!

  • MSG not the greatest arena in the world

by MSG on 4/22/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

The sight lines at the Garden are not good. The arena is not sufficiently pitched for hockey. As a consequence play in the corners is often out of view. This is true even in supposedly good (i.e. costly) seats. Thank goodness there’s a Jumbotron to catch what you cannot see directly on the ice. All to say, MSG is not “the greatest arena in the world” for hockey.

  • Top night

by Gav on 4/22/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Loved it - first time at Rangers visiting from U.K. Great atmosphere, a win, and “Dancing Larry” - what more could you wish for! Gavin (Irons!).
