New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

First ever time at a libel hockey game and it was spectacular. The venue is awesome, the staff were extremely professional and courteous. The atmosphere was superb, especially when the Rangers scored. I’ll be back that’s for sure

  • Great experience

by Frank was funny all the way through the show. Started with politics, and then other impressions. I liked how he let crowd chime in on who he could imitate. Great show. on 3/22/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Very good seats. Saw a good game that Rangers won.

  • Rangers win, seats fail

by rangers7718 on 3/22/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

We knew our seats had a limited view but we could not see the score board at all. Additionally, we had to stretch higher or lower to see the either goals. I would never purchase these seats again. I didn't understand that "limited view" meant only being able to comfortably see center ice. Ticketmaster should be more specific.

My feyonces First NHL game and she loved the experience. Great line up with some of the biggest names in the league, the atmosphere at/in the arena, the fans and when they live sent some videos with celebs like Messier, Lundqvist, McGreggor. We had a great time at the arena and an awesome game!

  • Amazing

by Addster on 3/17/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

When Mika Zibanejad scored those 2 goals it was amazing, they had the lead, but when they were trailing 4-3 I got a little nervous but when Vesey scored the goal it was a relief but they won 5-3.

  • Awesome night in New York

by Chris on 3/5/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Our night at MSG was amazing from our son receiving a certificate , as it was hs first hockey game, to being escorted to our seats by an usher , to receiving free popcorn and pretzels towards the end of the evening. Unfortunately, the New York Rangers lost to the Senators. But, my son did receive a free NYR t-shirt....truly a beautiful experience. Thank you.

  • Rangers Crush Kings but Ketchup EVERYWHERE

by KnicksFan88 on 3/1/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

Had a great time at the game and had amazing seats in 103. Rangers destroyed the Kings with a limited roster after Miller was ejected early. However, I did miss a crucial play early in the game while opening ketchup packet after ketchup packet for my chicken tenders. Someone had also stepped on a dropped ketchup packet which then went everywhere. The ketchup pumps need to come back!

by Cmkohut92 on 2/11/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Always a good time watching the boys win! The garden is also beautiful, never a bad seat in the house, but i must confess, the blue shirts area is where it's at. 226 was nice, but the 400's are nicer.
