New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

  • Rangers Game 6

by Micknice14 on 5/2/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I had taken my son for his first Rangers game and on top of that a playoff game and it couldn’t have been a better experience for both of us. Entering the Garden was fairly painless besides my belt buckle which I knew I should’ve just taken off from the start and then our section 225 row 4 were outstanding!!! The game itself was excellent and altogether could not have asked for a better experience and the only thing that could’ve made it perfect was if Mother Nature gave us a better night and completely out of the hands of the Garden and if so it would have been perfect

  • Sucked

by Mm on 4/27/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

Too expensive. Terrible seats. Blocked view but no indication.

  • Overzealous usher

by Toe on 4/27/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

The game didn't go how I wanted it to,but that is the nature of sports... MSG has become more known for how quiet it is for big games, when it used to be a raucous atmosphere that opponents feared... The reason I say that is because I was told to "take it down 10 notches" from an usher with a power trip...it's a playoff game,it's supposed to be loud..this isn't a movie theater,it's playoff hockey... I was disrupting no one in my section, they were actually cheering on my enthusiasm..Then this usher says that I need to calm down my cheering in a Rangers vs devils playoff game?? That's basically my only complain..let fans be fans..and check your power trip at home usher dude

The atmosphere was good. Everything is overpriced. The view was bad, did not see the other goal.

  • Greatest Sports Moment!

by Jedi Dave on 4/16/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Went to see my Maple Leafs take on the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. I spent 4 days in New York City, went to so many attractions, and the hockey game was the best. Ranger fans are awesome and good-humoured.

  • It was very funny

by Tovis on 4/13/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

When i first got to MSG I was very excited because I knew it would be very funny. The match was very exciting. The things you did in between the call offs were very good. I loved when dancing Larry came in. I was very happy the entire time I was there. The toilets were very clean and fresh.

by Steven S on 4/2/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience from start to finish. Love the Rangers and love the bonding experience with my son!

  • First time at Madison Square Garden

by Nomad on 4/1/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Went for the Penguins-Rangers game. Rather smooth entry other than a cranky officer who complained about my group's gathering spot as the one person with tickets on his phone processed each one through individually. Seats were comfortable, crowd was enthusiastic and the game was a good one. Sight lines from my seat behind on of the goalie nets were good and the video board was chocked full on info to help follow the game.

  • Left after 1/3

by Me on 3/31/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

Great to experience the MSG, but sadly just didn’t care for the game.

  • I Love The New York Rangers

by Jennifer on 3/24/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

Love to go to games, but by FAR, tickets are way too expensive. My dream since I am 8 years old was to sit down by the ice. We could never afford such tickets. We barely could afford the nose bleeds. It actually is cheaper for us to go see the NYR in another state and city. I can never get tickets for my family of four because it costs more then my Mortgage payments.

  • Always a Good Time

by Denise A on 3/24/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Win or lose we always have a good time at the Ranger game! It’s always a party atmosphere. All the fans they put on the Jumbotron and games they play with them and I love love the chant we sing when they score.
