New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Compare to the other matches we have been to, this one was the least enjoyable. Others were organized better, had better atmosphere, sound and other features

Team is a little boring this year, especially for the price of the tickets

The admission process was quick enough, and there were some assistance members who helped us find our seats. The bars and the shops were so nice and....the mood was amazing!

  • Good overall game experience

The outcome (loss) wasn’t what I was hoping for, but the overall game experience was good, as well as ordering/accessing my tickets through Ticketmaster and sending them to my Apple Wallet.

  • Terrible Game!

by JWeber on 11/11/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

I love my NY Rangers, but this was an absolutely terrible game. And to have the legends that were there, and to play the way they played, was disgraceful! And to the NY Islanders!? Ugh! I think we should get a portion of our ticket money back if they play horribly and esp when they don’t even score 1 goal! Terrible Also, we got a pretzel and it was so dry and hard, it was barely edible! All around terrible time!

  • Great time, took my son to his first Rangers game

by lramos718 on 11/11/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

It was a wonderful experience despite the Blue shirts taking an L, but hey you can't win them all. My only issue is I was in the lower section closer to the ice and the seating is really tight. For example someone else knee kept hitting someone's drink when they sat down. I love MSG but if i have to compare it to the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, I do kind of wish MSG would take a few pointers. Nonetheless I will return to support the Knicks and Rangers! Lets go NY
