New York Liberty History

The New York Liberty are one of three active founding franchises in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Liberty have made six WNBA Finals appearances, in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2023 and 2024, and topped the Eastern Conference seven times. In 2023, the team captured the in-season Commissioner's Cup behind a Finals MVP performance by Jonquel Jones, and later, Breanna Stewart became the first Liberty player to win the WNBA Most Valuable Player award. New York returned to the Commissioner’s Cup Final in 2024, but fell to the Minnesota Lynx. The two teams met again in the 2024 WNBA Finals, where the Liberty claimed their first title. Jones was named the series MVP, and after the season, Stewart was selected to the All-WNBA First Team while Jones and Sabrina Ionescu made the All-WNBA Second Team.

  • Refreshing

by Dommy on 10/1/23Barclays Center - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

MVP T-shirt as a first option and a liberty key chain as a second purchase in the merchant area sets a precedent for how MVP players make fashion statements. Less fabric for the first game of a best out of 5 or 7 series shows a sense of awareness for players how have been very successful in the game of basketball.

by NEWTRUEFAN on 9/29/23Barclays Center - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

WNBA games are so fun & friendly, and the Liberty team is so great. They also have the best mascot ever: ELLIE!! She is the heart & soul of this game, and brings the best cheer to the audience! Highly highly recommend attending – after my first game, I wanted to get season tickets immediately!

  • 40/40 club closed

by sf on 9/29/23Barclays Center - BrooklynRating: 4 out of 5

I had a great time supporting the liberty but I was very disappointed that the 40/40 club was closed. I was sold these seats with the understanding that dinner would be included but it was not. When I approached the guest services desk at Barclays they suggested I reach out to Ticketmaster for support. Hoping for some support or contact. Thank you!

  • NY Liberty & Barclays Deliver As Usual

by Saint on 9/28/23Barclays Center - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

My new favorite thing to do lately has been going to NY Liberty games physically rather than watching at home. The cleanliness, the atmosphere, the helpful + knowledgeable staff, and the goodies and the halftime shows at Barclays have made this an easy habit to pick up. On top of the Liberty’s dominating and fun play night after night, I will always make time/make plans to go to a game and have started bringing friends and family along too. GO LIBERTY!

  • Is this still a sports event? - Really??!?

by Kordak on 9/28/23Barclays Center - BrooklynRating: 3 out of 5

There used to be a time when going to a basketball game was exciting - watching athletes hustling up and down the court, passing balls and scoring baskets was the excitement you were buying a ticket for and that was quite enough. Sadly these days are gone. It appears that now the basketball game has become a sideshow - at best while the real "excitement"is a non-stop barrage of high octane music at ear splitting levels, MCs screaming at the audience to jump up and down, wave towels, mug for the cameras and most of all make noise - clap clap clap clap your hands even when the game is already in motion. There is not one second of down time to catch your breath, think or focus on the actual game thanks to the overwhelming amount of visual stimulants or disruption on the giant monitors, constant announcements ,mascots running up and down the seats, t-shirt cannons being fired, fiery torches and fan contests on the floor of the arena. Given the numerous TV time outs and other interruptions the game itself actually rarely flows for more than a couple of minutes. Frequently you see the players stand around waiting for all the other "entertainers"to leave the floor. It's hard to figure how the professional athletes can stay focused on their task to win a game with all that ruckus going on and I'm sure the quality of the games is not being helped by all that "excitement". I guess that's what this is all about for the arena and the promoters - keeping up the energy for the fans, make everything seem more exciting especially to the younger fans in the arena, give the fans their monies' worth. But what about the people who buy tickets to see a sports event, not a three ring circus show? Actual sports fans coming to see a high level basketball game? I guess these fans are increasingly in the minority. Basketball like many other sports are now packaged as "entertainment"to keep the attention span challenged masses engaged. I still love to watch women's basketball but the presentation these days is torture!
