New York Liberty History

The New York Liberty are one of three active founding franchises in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Liberty have made six WNBA Finals appearances, in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2023 and 2024, and topped the Eastern Conference seven times. In 2023, the team captured the in-season Commissioner's Cup behind a Finals MVP performance by Jonquel Jones, and later, Breanna Stewart became the first Liberty player to win the WNBA Most Valuable Player award. New York returned to the Commissioner’s Cup Final in 2024, but fell to the Minnesota Lynx. The two teams met again in the 2024 WNBA Finals, where the Liberty claimed their first title. Jones was named the series MVP, and after the season, Stewart was selected to the All-WNBA First Team while Jones and Sabrina Ionescu made the All-WNBA Second Team.

  • One small change needed.

by Topcat on 8/9/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Everything was great. Nice facility and multiple food options, just one small annoyance. At the beginning of the 3rd quarter the promotional staff along with team mascot was standing in the stairwell waiting for first timeout to do their giveaway. First timeout came and went was not their turn so had to wait for the next one. While the game was going on, people would come down the stairs to have their pictures taken with the mascot. For most of the third quarter we could only see half the court. Please have staff be more aware of their surroundings. There has to be a better way to do what they needed to do without getting in the site lines of paying customers.

  • One of the reasons I love coming back home to NYC

Man I had an amazing experience watching the Liberty play at the Barclay Center.Everything was great from the staff to the crowd.

  • Incredible Atmosphere!

by SaraMrowski on 8/9/23Rating: 5 out of 5

I recently turned 28 and for my birthday I bought tickets to the Liberty vs Aces! It was so special getting to go to my first ever WNBA game and also treat my dad to his first ever! The crowd was electric, the players were so insanely good, but best of all was watching women FLOURISH! I never thought I’d get to witness the world changing and seeing that women can not only play like the men, but play BETTER. I was more entertained watching these incredible athletes than I have been with the NBA in a while. If you love basketball, you HAVE to go. Best day of my life and I hope I get to do it again some day! To top it off, the arena was so clean, the staff was insanely friendly, only thing I’d say is to open the doors a little earlier to enter the arena. Okay, and don’t get the pretzel. Super dry.

  • Consistently strong

by Bronxfan on 7/28/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Listen, the Barclays Center knows how to host events, period. This is my second basketball game - but I've seen concerts and boxing hosted here too - and not ONCE have I been disappointed. One of the best managed venues by far.

  • the game was AMAZING! but it's too loud

by jess on 7/26/23Rating: 4 out of 5

i am a ride or die WNBA fan, the liberty is amazing, our roster this year is to die for. the game was so great. so fun and exciting. i brought my parents who were skeptical if it would be fun or not and they had a great time. it was too loud, though. i can do a loud event, i'm a born and raised new yorker, but man it was just too loud. i didn't love the emcee/host girl either. and because the volume levels were so harsh, her voice came out so shrill and it was just grating.

  • Great atmosphere

by Bevers on 7/22/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Loved watching the Liberty (albeit they lost), was expecting more screeching kids given it was campers day, but the venue and occasion made it a great day and to be fair all the groups were well Behaved… I would recommend more people go and support the WNBA… as usual in American sports they appear to value spectators and make it an occasion

  • Brooklyn

by Nyke on 7/16/23Rating: 5 out of 5

The game was awesome. It was really special to see my first game in my hometown. I currently Live in Pennsylvania. There’s nothing like being at home. The crowd was amazing the support surrounding the liberty was incredible. The halftime shows were good. There could’ve been more concessions stands open. We had a choice of two. Other than that it was perfect.

  • Family Game Day

Coming from Belgium with my granddaughter it was a great experience for her to be able to watch some of her favorite players perform

  • Bring Ear Plugs!

    by Freddy G on 7/8/23Rating: 4 out of 5

The game was surprisingly close given the standings--a real nail-biter during the last few minutes. Fortunately Stewie was red hot and helped the Liberty pull it out. She is a force of nature! As a long-time UCONN Huskies fan, I also marveled at Diana Taurasi's continuing intensity and top level skills. Am taking one star away due to the ear-splitting decibel level (way louder than any sporting event I have ever attended), with the crowd urged on by signs to make more noise. No surprise that hearing loss is a serious issue, even for younger people. I will bring ear plugs to the next game for sure.

  • Thrilling and VERY American experience

by Foxy on 6/28/23Barclays Center - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

We're from England. We have no sports experience like this! The atmosphere is fun, energetic, family-friendly and SO thrilling. The scores are so close, the game so fast, it was a fantastic start to our trip from England.

  • Awesome Sauce!

    by Queen67 on 6/24/23Barclays Center - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

I picked my seat so of course it was perfect! I could swe the players go in and out of the tunnel. They partially interact with fans so that ain't the best feeling since most of the fans pay to see them play and would like a smile of acknowledgement.

  • Wonderful time!

by DB on 6/23/23Barclays Center - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

Had an incredible time at the NY Liberty vs Phoenix Mercury game. It was such an amazing environment to be apart of. We watched some amazing athletes. Really enjoyed the set up of the arena as well!
